THE L06 OF THE S S RIVERSIDE LAUNCHING 0F THE SHIP '43- Although the S S Rlverslde was olflclally christened and started on her voyage rn 1930 the framework was la1d two years befor after a lte had S A' Fu-I-ure Sn-Q finally been chosen e S 'Pain ' Locatlons other than our prc ent one had been consldered such as the Q H L Lafayette Hlgh School playmg field on Tacoma near Delaware School 81 vi I and a long narrow lot on Ross Street The slte chosen was at that tlme Se 90 known as the Handel Slte The counclls declslon to buy thls slte was X made by only a one vote margm On Apr11 28 1927 the Board of Educatlon entered mto a contract wlth F I and W A Kldd as archltects for the bulldlng During the ensulng months the communlty watched wth lncreaslng lnterest the progress of va thls new landmark from ground brcaklng to excax atlon to glrder ralsmg until the blllldlflg, finally assumed mdl lduallty and the grounds were Hmm' landscaped The two rmposlng columns over the school s mam entrance are an lnterestlng feature of the archltectural structure At that t1me they were thc largest ever quarrled at Amherst Ohio Each one IS 21 feet seven mches hlgh and welghs elght tons On May 28 1928 Clarence I Lanlch then pI'6SlClCI1l of the Rlverslde Buslnessmens Assoclatlon turned The appolntments for prlnclpal and asslstant prlncxpal had been glven ln 1928 to Mr Charles W Whlt ney and Mr Ray W Spear respectlvely At last the school awalted her young students who were to embark on September 8 1930 Durlng the first week of school 908 students reglstered One can llflaglfle what a pleasure It must have been to enter the school for the first tlme when she was spanklng new As one approaches the mam entrance now and wanders up and down halls and stalrways he sees the depresslons that have been worn by the feet of the many many students who have studied here durlng the past 25 years The first students were dellghted wlth the spaclousness and attractiveness of the school and grounds the Swlmmlng pool the gymnaslum the audltorlum the stage and the llbrary The publlc ad dress system also was an lnnovatlon a convemence vshlch we today take so much for granted On the evenlng of Aprll 16 1930 Rlverslde High School was formally dedlcated Almost 2000 people attended the exercises and made a tour of the bulldlng The mam speaker for the occasion was Dr Ernest C Hartwell the Superlntendent of Schools who discussed the alms of modern educatlon the advantages glven students and the educational progress being made The hlghllght of the program was the presentatlon to Mr Whltney of the golden spade vthlch had been used to turn the first sod ln May 1928 The presentation was made by Charles G Oelhelm presldent of the Rlverslde Buslnessmen s Assoclatlon He spoke of the slgnlficance and Importance of the new school to the communlty Richard Humphrey retlred presldent of the Black Rock Businessmen s Assoclatlon praised the Buffalo school system ln hls brlef address Outstanding guests on thls occaslon were Chalrman ohn Egan Henry C Steul lr and Max Nl Yellen of the Board of Educatlon Councllman Wllbur Grandlson Charles P Alvord Dr George E Smith and Fran c1s H Wlng deputy superlntendents of schools F I Krdd and W A Kldd architects who drew the plans for the bulldlng M SchweneHuegel who supervised the constructlon Lew Fullerton oseph Hoffmeyer Vincent Roth and Clarence Lanlch Several prlnclpals from both high schools and grammar schools were also present Reglstratlon lncreased rapldly so that when the school opened ln September 1931 there were 1356 students attendlng During 1951 the bulldlng was redecoratecl Eye appealing shades of green plnk blue and yellow were used ln contrast to the buff whlch had become very drab as the years passed by The aquamarlne color and delicate dest ns ID the audltorlum are especlally attractlve The years have seen many changes ln personnel as a result of retlrement or death We have been most fortunate that our two orlglnal pllots Mr Spear actively and Mr Whltney with genulne lnterest and at times partlclpatlon stlll gulde the shlp on her course Rlverslde has salled through calm waters and has also weathered the troubled seas of the war years Elghty one of our young men were sacrificed for the cause of freedom We are thankful that uprrght responslble men have been our leaders We are proud of the respected posxtlon R1V6fSld6 holds among the cxty s schools We pray that God w1ll gulde us durmg the next quarter cen tury and glve us the wlsdom and strength to keep the beacon llght of truth, justice and rlght burnlng as brlghtly as ll has ln the past I3 O C I I C . . . . ,R .
