SHIPMASTER MR CHARLES W WHITNEY 1930 1944 In 1930 when students first embarked on the S S Riverside Mr Whitney stood at the gangplank to wel come them aboard Steadily loyally and wisely he charted the course and guided the voyage until he retired In Iune 1944 Under the leadership of Mr Whitney our school rapidly became one of the outstanding schools School from 1919 1929 He had yomed the faculty of Hutchinson in l9l6 as a history teacher and became head of his department the following year Although Mr Whitney has retired we frequently see him at school helping ln an emergency or enjoying a social hour Mr Whitneys discernment democratic methods foresight and wise leadership are largely respon lble for Riverside s 25 successful years 6 l , . , . . , u . - u I ' , . , ' 1 1 . SHIPBUILDERS MR LLOYD A MILLER 1932 1952 Mr M1ller launched his teaching career at Riv erslde ln l932 as a faculty member of the Busl ness Department In 1939 he was appointed Guid ance Counselor From 1942 1946 he assumed the responslbilmes of an Assistant Prmcipal He once again resumed his teaching post until 1948 when he received his appointment as Assistant Principal In 1952 he was transferred to East High School where at present he holds the same posltlon M Miller 1S especially remembered for his enthusiasm friendliness and genial sense of humor He has a ship of firm timbers at Rlverslde DR IRWIN H I-IIMMELE 1946 1948 Dr Hlmmele now Assistant Superintendent of Schools served as Assistant Prlnclpal at RlV6l'S1dC from anuary l946 to August 1948 Prior to 1946 he served as Information and Educatlon OHicer for the Strateglc Airforces of the Pacific wlth the rank of Colonel after five years of servlce in World War II Before this he had been Assistant Principal at Lafayette High School Dr Hlmmele IS recorded ln Rlversldes log book as a man of ambition 1n1t1at1ve and executive ablllty He proved himself to be a master shlpbullder , , ' ' . r. , . been of far-reaching assistance in helping to build t , . . 7 I - ' , , . .
