SHIPMASTER MR CHARLES W WHITNEY 1930 1944 In 1930 when students first embarked on the S S Riverside Mr Whitney stood at the gangplank to wel come them aboard Steadily loyally and wisely he charted the course and guided the voyage until he retired In Iune 1944 Under the leadership of Mr Whitney our school rapidly became one of the outstanding schools School from 1919 1929 He had yomed the faculty of Hutchinson in l9l6 as a history teacher and became head of his department the following year Although Mr Whitney has retired we frequently see him at school helping ln an emergency or enjoying a social hour Mr Whitneys discernment democratic methods foresight and wise leadership are largely respon lble for Riverside s 25 successful years 6 l , . , . . , u . - u I ' , . , ' 1 1 .
