Y. 3 Prelude OUR years have passed--years of maturing--mastering--mellowing--each year a movement in the great symphony of life. As we have participated in this symphony, we have matured scholastically, socially, and spiritually. The familiar strains of each of the movements have mellowed into the beautiful friendships formed and the happiness found. On looking back we dream and remember--remember all the little things that are interwoven into the theme of a great symphony. There are such things as our first class when we were assigned a whole chapter for hornework--the lunch periods--sitting with our best Friends--library Fines--spine tingling passes into the end zone-- chemistry labs--the close basketball games--the band concerts--bull sessions in which we discussed everything from chocolate sodas to what's it all about anyway. There has been more than loud socks-- class elections--flickering shadows over the goal posts on a Saturday afternoon, there has been the beauty of a Beethoven symphony--the inspiring talks in assembly--the helping hand of a loyal friend--the grateful words well done. The beauty of this symphony of the past four years can never be reproduced, but the melody of each movementwill linger long in our hearts. We hope that through this yearbook we have helped to recapture some of the highlights of our high school days. Our faculty spends invaluable hours preparing our lessons and guiding our ways. Like the conductor of a symphony orchestra the faculty picks out our imperfections and guides us in correcting these faults. Through years of experience they understand our problems and help us to overcome them as we, their students, attempt to play our parts. We wish to express our appreciation to this group of men and women for their daily, conscientious work and for their vital interest in each of us. Enalish HILE here at Riverside we, the Seniors, have been the composers of this symphony. The composition, our high school life, has wrought great royalties. Nothing will compare with the friendships won and the good will created. We, the graduates of 1952, go now from the halls of Riverside carrying with us the melody of friendship and good will toward all our fellowmen. With four years of experience behind us we should be able to compose an even greater symphony. So make life, death and that vast Forever One grand, sweet song. 12 Kingsley beniors TO THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 1952 To live content with small means, to seek elegance rather than luxury, and refinement rather than fashion, to be worthy, not respect- able, and wealthy, not rich, to study hard think quietly, talk gently, act frankly, to listen to stars and birds, to babes and sages, with open heart, to bear all cheerfully, do all bravely, await occasions, hurry never. In a word, to let the spiritual, unbidden and unconscious, grow up through the common. This is to be my symphony. William Henry Channing HE symphony of life of a student portrays the reflection of past hopes, the fulfillment of present ambition, and the foreshadowing of progress to come. Your four years at Riverside are completed. They have been crowded, happy years, full of action. They have been years of planning for that future from which you expect so much. We trust that you have acquired a sound and adequate foundation that will make it possible for you to meet the storms and misunderstandings in life. May you be like those pioneers who went forth with firm faith, in the knowledge that there is much labor, adiustment and building to be done if a harmonious world is to be established. Go forth into life promoting the best in others, practicing fair play and honest dealing, and thus guard our real Freedom and Faith in God. Four years have slipped so swiftly by Since we were Freshmen, green and shy, Who tried so hard to learn each rule And find our way around this school. The school was large and we were small, Each Senior seemed so very tall. We had so many stairs to climb o And could real nowhere quite on time By June we all had reached our stride And felt at home in Riverside. We'd been to games, we'd been on dates, We knew our teachers and classmates. But who can stop the fl ight of time? We now were Sophomores in '49, Who though ourselves so very wise And tried to pose and dramatize. A wish for your future, O Classmate, A prayer as we separate: May you reach your goal though you God be with you, wherever you are. 16 Then came a vacation out of season, A five-week coal strike was the reason But we returned to longer sessions, So we could make up all our lessons. At last we reached our Junior year, One day of all stands out most clear, Our class day exercise and dance Gave most of us our first big chance. Now is the year of '52 The time we've spent is almost through, To teachers, friends, and parents dear I We give our thank yous' most sincere. As Seniors who will graduate, Some things we can evaluate: Work well if you would goals attain, Be diligent and knowledge gain. This council helps maintain order in the school and appoints receptionists, hall, assembly and cafeteria monitors. Receptionists receive'guests who visit the school. Hall monitors are assigned to desks on each floor to keep order during classes. Assembly monitors escort classes to the auditorium and cafeteria monitors maintain order in the lunchroom. We started our round of activities with our annual girls' assembly, during which the duties and responsibili- ties of each member of the Council were explained. In November, we held a rummage sale which included mittens, car plates, stickers, and our ever-popular pencils. Our annual alumnae dinner for former Council members was held in January at the Hotel Lenox. We wish to express our gratitude to both the faculty and the student body for their assistance and C0-0p- eration throughout the year. We sincerely hope that our efforts have upheld the traditions set by former Councils and have made' Riverside's Student Government stronger and more efficient. 58 CHE Boys' Small Council has been active this year trying to serve the school to a greater extent. The members A of the Council have met every Wednesday after school in Room 271 to discuss ways and means of achieving t eir goal. Some money was required to carry out our desired activities and the most successful source was the sale of monitor pins. Mr. Arthur Downes has given cheerful and generous assistance which has created a spirit of co- operation within this group. The progress of the Boys' Small Council has been a direct result of responsibilities accepted and carried out by its members. They have relinquished personal glory for the unsung duties of an efficient student government, in their efforts to make Riverside the best of high schools. This dance marked the completion of another successful year. The prime motive of the association is to establish a scholarship fund for one graduate a year. HIS year s football team was hindered by the lack of experienced players. Coach Martin Kentner and James Biggie, assistant coach, had a grim task of building a team from scratch at the beginning of the season. However, they built the team around a few men and shifted the players into the positions as needed. Riverside won one game and lost four this year. It was most obvious that luck wasn't on our side. Next year's prospects look very good with practically the complete team returning. With the use of the Split- T Formation and under the direction of two brilliant coaches, we are sur of having a championship team at R. H. S. next year. Row 4. STHIS year Riverside boasted a well-rounded basketball team. - Led by this year's captain, Hank Nowak, the only returning regular, the team won in its first five starts. After triumphing over Bennett, East, South Park, McKinley, and Fosdick Masten, it was upset by Grover Cleveland by a close score of 40 - 38. Beside Nowak, outstanding players are Ray Wilson, Joe Bablnsky, George Hoehn, Bob Horvath, and Emil Radi. The team won its first meet against Lafayette and beat Technical in the second, 46 - 20. With Peter James, Fred Wagner, and Ed Morrison consistently turn- ing in the best medley time in the city, the boys seem assured of making the All-High team. The team this year is a better balanced one, having good men in every event. Ron Balsch, a sophomore, is having a great year. Lettermen back from last year's team are Fred Wagner, Dave Wink, and Don Woods. Unclerclassmen who will return for next year's team are Lee Stauffer, Dave Wink, Don Woods, James Hummell, Peter James, James Endres, and Don Mathias. Our freshmen teams are turning in excellent times. Boys on the medley are Nohn, Mills, and Marsch. Riverside is looking forward to one of its best seasons in the last five years. 82 C NDER the expert guidance of Mr. Bolm, the Boys' Bowling Club met every Wednesday after school at Klaibers' Bowling Academy. The boys were divided into four teams, each consisting of four bowlers. These teams were identified as: Cadets, Two's, Big Three, and the Holy Rollers. While many boys already knew the rules of bowling, many others were given instructions. As a result of rugged competition, many of our boys learned to bowl in real league fashion.
