TO THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 1951 The true success of student life does not lie in the attain- ment of scholarship alone, but in the unfolding of an intelligent, upright, fearless, reverent, kind, and happy manhood, ready and glad to do service in the world. Henry Van Dyke UR Yearbook is appropriately dedicated this year to the United Nations. The many countries comprising its membership have dedicated themselves to preserve their nation- al existence as free peoples through a steadfast determination and a unity of purpose:-- to safeguard the principles of truth and justice upon which they have founded their way of living. As we pledge allegiance to our beloved Stars and Stripes at each assembly, our pledge has an added significance at this time. We must pray for the success of the efforts of the United Nations, be patient with their endeavors, obey their mandates, and be prepared to come to the defense of our country if our government calls us. In starting out in this world, you young Americans will seek for an outstretched hand of love and for a friendly light. May your lives shine in a dark world and bring the warmth of God's love into the hearts of those who have experienced only indifference and coldness, hunger and fear. It is the wish of both the faculty and myself that the future will give you all unlimited happiness and success. Give to the world the best that you have and the best will come back to you. Be strong: We are not here to play, to dream, to drift: We have hard work to do, and loads to liftg Shun not the struggle--face it: 'Tis God's gift. Maltbie D. Babcock Your principal and friend, 12
