Foreword F, in the pages of this year's SKIPPER, you sense the spirit of American democracy in action, we shall feel that we have accomplished our purpose. We have chosen as the theme of our yearbook, the United Nations, for we feel that here lies still a gleam of hope in a critical world. As students of a democratic institution, it is important that We remind our- selves of the aim of the United Nations: one world. This ideal can become an actuality only if a spirit of true brotherhood prevails. Here at Riverside we feel that through the blending of social, religious, and cultural differences we have already taken a step toward the achievement of one wor1d. Through tolerance our associations are harmonious and peaceful. If we can carry this way of living into the larger sphere of our relationships beyond school, we shall not have failed to do our part in helping to achieve one world. 4 Dedication TO ALL THOSE WHO LABOR AND STRIVE FOR ONE WORLD IN WHICH ALL HUMANITY MAY LIVE IN COMPARATIVE SECURITY AND PEACE. We have been furnished with the materials for building a life based on sound moral and spiritual valuesg it is our job now to build. If we remember the principles upon which our nation was founded, liberty and justice for all, we have a strong basis for the possible accomplish- ment of one world --perhaps still to be achieved within our own generation. Henry Van Dyke UR Yearbook is appropriately dedicated this year to the United Nations. The many countries comprising its membership have dedicated themselves to preserve their nation- al existence as free peoples through a steadfast determination and a unity of purpose:-- to safeguard the principles of truth and justice upon which they have founded their way of living. As we pledge allegiance to our beloved Stars and Stripes at each assembly, our pledge has an added significance at this time. We must pray for the success of the efforts of the United Nations, be patient with their endeavors, obey their mandates, and be prepared to come to the defense of our country if our government calls us. In starting out in this world, you young Americans will seek for an outstretched hand of love and for a friendly light. May your lives shine in a dark world and bring the warmth of God's love into the hearts of those who have experienced only indifference and coldness, hunger and fear. Skipper Advertising Staff DVERTISING is the way in which the school secures money to publish the SKIPPER. Obtaining advertisements is one of the most important duties of the students in order to make our yearbook a success. Under the direction of Mr. Renzoni, the advertising staff is organized in October. Those interested in being on the staff come to the advertising meeting which is held after school. At this time, the students are given a list of prospective advertisers and contract blanks. Each volunteers to contact one of these prospects and bring in an ad. Mr. Rentz has capably guided this group. The purpose of the club is to encourage public speaking and debate among the students. In addition to the regular Varsity debate teams which meet Hutchinson and Masten, a group of Junior Varsity debate teams made the rounds of our local elementary schools. Subjects such as Universal Military Training and Statehood for Hawaii were debated. The Varsity debate topic was, Resolved that Buffalo and Erie County Establish a Metropolitan System. This topic is very important to the community, since it includes the problem of suburbanitis. The girls had a lot of fun with the children and agreed that it should be an annual event. In addition to regular meetings we had special programs and parties. A kitchen party, splash party, slumber party and joint meetings were just a few. Mary Ann Bermel represented our club at the Annual Tri-Y Convention and helped get our bill, Increased Transportation Tax on Highway Trucks, sent to Albany. To climax a successful year, the girls and advisor attended the Annual Tri-Y dinner. Enter- tainment was furnished by the members, and a guest speaker, the personnel director of Satt1er's, gave a most enjoyable finale to our year. HE Y-Teen Club is an organ of the Junior members of the Y. W. C. A. With the assistance of Mrs. Cooper, Mrs. Volker, our club counselors, and Miss Stepheny Farner, the Riverside Y-Teens have had an active and enjoyable year. In November we had our installation service at the Kenmore Y. W. C. A. Later on in the year we had a few dances at the 'Y to which we invited Hi-Y groups from several Vocational High Schools. Among other activities were a hayride, sponsored by the Social Committee and a baked goods sale. At Christmas time the Y-Teens sang Carols at the Columbus Hospital and in January we sent two representatives to the Jamestown conference. 60 COR many years, the Business Club has been one of the most active organizations in Riverside. The primary purpose of this club is to create a greater interest in the business world on the part of those students who must some- day make their living in it. As a practical application of class-room theory, many of our members have rendered service to the teachers by typing and mimeographing for them, In all, 1950-51 has been a most profitable year. C ITH the Key Club now only one year old, the members of this Kiwanis sponsored service club for boys in High School, have shown great progress since last year. Two of the members attended last year's Key Club International Convention at Columbus, Ohio, and two more are planning to go to this year's convention, to be held in Miami, Florida. During this school year activities included a part in the Christmas assembly, sing- ing at the Veterans' Hospital, the Hi-Y Show, and also the Spring Concert. The whole school is grateful to Mr. King, for through his direction many an assembly has been much more enjoyable. Boys Chorus Band NDER the patience and friendly leadership of Mr. Hull, the colorful and enthusiastic band has led the student body in spirited performances at the football games and assembly programs. This year its ranks were increased by the welcome addition of several freshman violinists, a hopeful sign for the future. Photography Club IVERSIDE'S latest extra-curricular activity, The Photography Club, got off to a fine start in 1950, with the aid of Mr. R. P. Schmidle, our technical advisor. Members have enjoyed not only instruction in the physical principles of photography but also the individual developement of appreciation in standards of form and beauty. Several field trips helped us to put theory into practice in a profitable and enjoyable manner. Riverside's Photo Club welcomes the addition of new recruits. Though our present member ship is low, our aspirations are high for making this organization one of the most popular in the school. Parents are urged to attend the monthly meetings so that their children will not be deprived of any possible assistance in fitting them for the future. Meetings are held on the third Wednesday afternoon of every month. Two evening meetings are also planned for every school year. Besides members of the faculty and parents, six seniors represent the student body. The association also wishes to establish a scholarship fund to enable at least one graduate a year to attend an institution of higher learning. The most important social event of the season was the annual Alumni Dance which was held at Kleinha.n's Music Hall on January 6, 1951. The dance was very successful due to the efforts of the Past Presi- dent, Thomas Bowers, and his loyal co-workers. As a result, our fine team succeeded in bringing the Columbia Cup to Riverside for the first time in the history of the school. Another red-letter day for Riverside came when our team trounced Technical with a score of 21-0 on Thanks- giving Day. We were honored when two members of the team earned places on the All-High Team.
