P W L BM P2 M THE SKIPPER JUNE 1950 7wmhbM4 Wwm6m Published by the Senior Class of Riverside High School Buffalo, N. Y. 3 The many will follow the beaten track With guideposts on the way, They live and have lived for ages back With a chart for every day. Someone has told them it's safe to go On the road he has traveled o'er, And all that they ever strive to know Are the things that were known before A few strike out, without map or chart, Where never a man has been, From the beaten paths they draw apart To see what no man has seen. There are deeds they hunger alone to dog Though battered and bruised and sore, They blaze the path for the many, who Do nothing not done before. --Edgar A. Guest 4 TO YOUTH -- AT THE CROSS-ROADS OF LIFE Dedication To every man there openeth A Way, and Ways, and a Way. And the High Soul climbs the High Way, And the Low Soul grasps the Low, And in between, on the misty flats, The rest drift to and fro. But to every man there openeth A High Way, and a Low. And every man decideth The way his soul shall 5 go. John Oxenham OW that we have reached the cross- roads of our educational life, we wish to express our deep and sincere appreciation to those who have so faithfully guided us along the road during the past four years. It is my joy in life to find At every turning of the road, The strong arm of a comrade kind To help me onward with my load. And since I have no gold to give, And love alone must make amends, My only prayer is, while I live,-- God make me worthy of my friends! --Frank Dempster Sherman Fclculi E!!! You have been guided and urged, by your parents and teachers, to attain the goal of graduation. Life now gives you the freedom of choice of paths. There is a road open to you with a guide post called EASY WEALTH AND SELFISHNESS. Another road that brings adventure and where courage is needed has the guide post called SERVICE. The road-side directions point out the necessity of honest at- titudes toward all people, the need of faith in your fellow man, and the great need and the joy of working toward the advancement of peace and freedom. ln all cases, it is a rough road that leads to the heights of greatness. So long as faith with freedom reigns, And loyal hope survives, And gracious charity remains To leaven lowly livesg While there is one untrodden tract For intellect or will, And men are free to think and act, Life is worth living still. With your diploma will go all the good wishes of the faculty of Riverside High School for a useful, happy, and successful life. Your principal and friend, Ca? lfvf pfaa,-a. LLOYD A. MILLER Assistant Principal TO THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 1950 Life is similar to a main highway in many respects. There is a beginning and an end with many crossroads between. Graduation from high school is one of the milestones on the highway. As early as possible each one should determine his destination or successful goal Success must be analyzed for it should not mean the acquisition of material wealth alone. Success is won through diligent and efficient effort and results from unstinting Concentra tion upon the goal. If you expect to receive you must first give. Plan your future as an engineer would make detailed plans for a highway bridge across a wide river. The foundation is of utmost importance. Education can help you make your foundation for your life goal. May your journey along the highway of life be a happy one. Sincerely yours nd Q- Assistant Principal 9 Facult RAY W. Hull, L Miller 'G l Miss Lockwood Miss Wells ll CWB, the Class of l95O, have traveled together for the past four years and have now reached a parting of the ways. Each one of us, individually, must decide which path he will follow and what course he will pursue. Let us choose wisely, for there will be no turning back. There's an unknown trail-- but we'll take it. It's a steep hard trail-- who's afraid? There are deep sharp chasms to walk byg No one's hands can aid. Follow, follow, the far trail seems to say, Follow, comrade, follow, and you'll make the peak today! --Mary Carolyn Davies 'X in 'N 31 Mn Xu '7 'Q' M fr 01, A f ' . I .. The Purple and the Gold we leave, From school we must depart, The memory of the days gone by Will linger in our hearts. The highway that before us lies, ls yet to us unknown, Although we leave the friends we love, We do not go alone. Some friends will travel at our side, To cheer us on our way, And memories fond of days of youth Within our hearts will stay. The record of our high school days, We close with golden lock, For no one yet has learned a way Of turning back the clock. Before us lie the pages white Of a volume bright and new, In which each one of us may write The things he hopes to do. We wish to thank, before We leave, Our teachers and our friends, For help, for guidance, and for love, And patience without end. Class of 1950, We may look back upon Our years at Riverside: Our work, our play, the deeds we've done With a feeling of great pride. --Mildred Glor 14 Row l. We hope that our future years at Riverside will be as happy and successful as this first one has been. 45 ERHAPS one of the most important things to be learned from our school activities is tolerance. In the future, as we travel our several ways through life, if we have learned to be tolerant of our fellow men, We gain in understanding and canglive in peace with all men. Let me live in my house by the side of the road Where the race of men go by, They are good, they are bad, they are weak, they are strong, Wise, foolish--so am I. Then why should I sit in the scorner's seat, Or hurl the cynic's ban? Let me live in my house by the side of the road And be a friend of man. 46 Sam Walter Foss 1 ct ivities ,,, g, wiv- W Nm -il' J- HOOPER Row 1. The Council acts as a govern- ing body in student government. During the year, we have been successful in selling the new Alma Mater pencils and Riverside mittens. The money thus earned is used in purchasing some useful gift for the school. A reunion dinner was held in December at Leonardo's Restaurant with the members of last year's Council. In February, a party was held for the Large Council. At this time, we should like to express our appreciation to the faculty and student body for assisting us to keep our organization running smoothly. We cordially hope that our efforts have made Riverside as proud of its student government this year as it has been in the past. On October 6, the day for the first meet against Fosdick and Hutchin- son, the team finished second. ln the second race on October 13, against Kensington and Lafayette, we finished third. ln the third race on October 20, against Lafayette, Grover-Cleveland, Fosdick and Hutchinson, we were fourth. Finally on October 21, it was time for the All-High race. The first five men to finish for Riverside were: Captain Bob Klepser - 7, Lothar Maier - 32, Wayne Nolan - 41, Joe Rodak - 583 Alex Hazelton - 66. The team finished seventh in the final standing. The players the team will depend upon this year are Bud, Con- yers and Jim Lumadue who both made honorable mention, Ed Skoney and Harvey Booker making the infield, while Sam Falzone and Dan Platek will return for the outfield chores. Ken Lingswiler and Bob Lee will catch, while Joe Kloepp will add strength. R Coach McClogan and his nine charges are confident that they 7' can win the League I championship again this year as they have in j the past two years. 1, A Baseball Tennis 4 f C ITH the starting of another year of tennis, our able coach, Mr. Lewis Miller is very confident of a much better season Y than the previous ones because We have lost only one regular from last year. The regulars of last year, Bob Jackson fthe winner of the fall elimination tournamentj, Steve Toth, Ronald Bolander, ? Robert Hoover, and George Hambruch, may have a very tough time Q vi' holding their positions on the team because of stiff competition. 7 Val Bartkowski, transfer from Technical High School, and Gerald Miller are candidates for the open positions on the team. as a re- sult of the fall elimination tournament. Because of the inclement Weather, the boys are forced to train by running around the corridors on the third floor. This group has great prospects for its spring pro- gram. Many of last year's lettermen are back and there are several underclassrnen with promising futures. '74 Cheerleaders CWHROUGHOUT the year, our many assemblies have been made complete by our hard-working cheer- leaders. Press through: Nothing can harm if you are true. And when the night comes, rest: The earth is friendly as a mother's breast. --Edwin Markham lO3 fl? in X vp N I Na. ml if , gf ix N - 'I lg' A Krxdx .
