HE story of the Black Rock--Riverside section of Buffalo is one of the most romantic in the annals of western New York. From the wilderness of Revolutionary days, Black Rock has passed through many periods of historic evolution---from the days of its strategic commercial position at the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825 up to the present time when it exercises a dominant influence in the life of the Niagara Frontier. What a panorama of history was unfolded within its boundaries! The first recorded event concerning Black Rock was the rigging of LaSalle's sturdy ship, The Griffon on Squaw Island in May 1679. In 1803-1804 the Holland Land Company surveyed this area and the town that arose nearby was named Black Rock---after the irregular triangular rock jutting out into the Niagara River, from which point the old Black Rock Ferry plied to and from the Canadian shore. The War of 1812 left its mark on Black Rock which offered excellent locations for fortifications and barracks. During the entire war Black Rock served as a NavgcYard for the American Great Lalges Fleet. Finally, on August 12, 1814, at the bridge crossing ajaquada at Niagara Street, Major Lodowick Morgan of e First U.. S. Rifles, repulsed the ritish in memorable encounter. In the 183O's, the Buffalo and Niagara Falls Railroad, built through the very streets of the com- munity, brought it many advantges, but because the Erie Canal had stimulated the progress of Buf- falo beyond its fondest dreams e supremacy of Black Rock was doomed. Buffalo emerging victori ous in this struggle for commercial supremacy, included the prosperous community of Black Rock within its city limits on March 21, 1853. Since Civil War days the Black Rock section has reflected the progress of the whole Niiara Frontier. Waves of immigration to the New World left their imprint upon the localigy with e steady march of German, Polish, Hungarian, Swedish and Irish racial groups which ormed colon- ies within the area. These people brought with them their old world customs which had a profound influence upon the social, cultural and religious foundations of the future. . With the advent of the twentieth century, the Black Rock area was swept into the tidal wave of industry. Nearness of transportation, power and labor supply resulted in a booming, commercial prosperity which, in turn caused the emergence of the brand new community of Riverside. World War I was an energizing factor in the development of this new section Where thousand of homes mushroomed almost overnight. A new and composite citizenry has adapted itself to the American vxglayloif life, anxious to offer its children educational advantages denied to themselves in the Old or . . With the opening of Riverside High School in 1930 the dream of all racial groups sprarigi into reality, for education had become the criterion of progress in the New World. Riverside gh School is truly The United Nations in miniature, where diverse racial backgrounds and interests are sublimated in the pursuit of a new American ideal. During the period of World War II, the Riverside-Black Rock area was in reality an arsenal of Democracy. From its four corners poured an unending supply of machines and manpower to term- inate the struggle. Many of its finest youths perished in this fight for a better world ---- for the gightitp prcetserve and strengthen those very ramparts of freedom which their forefathers had la- ore o a aan. -The Future? The Black Rock-Riverside area rises to its challenge with the same labor, patience, good-neighborliness and zeal which have distinguished its progress in the past. --Robert I. Rentz 2 THE SKIPPER ll.lNE l949 W 4 Wwmim. Published by the Senior Class of ' Riverside High School Buffalo, N. Y. 5 , UEUIE TIU E theme of this year's Skipper is indicative of the group we wish to honor. 'I'he graduation class of 1949 dedicates this year book to an active and beneficial organization of this community, the River- side High School and Community Association. We wish to thank the many parents and civic-minded people of this group for their visible support and for their assistance in establishing a closer relationship between community and parents, on the one side, and school and faculty, on the other. During the five years since this organization was formed, the school has been the recipient of several fine gifts such as a Glockenspiel, a u beautiful picture, books for the library, and a 3100 bond to last year's Senior Class. We hope, in a small measure, to express our gratefulness and ap- preciation to the Riverside High School and Community Association by dedicating this 1949 issue of the Skipper to them. 4 HIVE SIDE HIGH SIIHUUL AN EUMMUNITY SSUEI TIU A OFFICERS M Row 1. They have been a link be- tween us and our parents. Through thern we too have learned how to take our places in this community. X5 LMARCHANT I-:ACU LTY RAY W. SPEAR Principal ' TO THE GRADUATJNG CLASS OF 1949 g I-IEN we realize how quickly time passes, we become aware how important it is to use every minute before it is gone forever. Since Riverside High School first opened, nineteen years have already slipped by. During that time 4061 young men and women have been graduated from this school and taken their places in the life of this community or elsewhere in the world. Your Class will add over 200 more names to this roll. How have you used your time during the four years you have been here 'P How will you now apply what you have learned, to the future? Consider what Henry Van ,Dyke has said, The true success of student life does not lie in the attainment of scholarship alone, but in the unfolding of an intelligent, upright, fearless, reverent, ' kind, and happy manhood Cor womanhoodl, ready and glad to do service in the world. As you leave lftiverside to obtain employment or to further your education, think of your future living and learning in terms of doing service in the world. Mere fame may be a barren thing, but the man or woman who 1S of service to others leads a happy and fruitful life. As citizens, not only of your community, nor of America alone, but of the world, there are new responsibilities to be assumed. So far you have been guided along the Way by parents and teachers. Have you used your time wisely so that you can go on now, alone? We are living in a time of great and grave importance to the whole human race. What will you do to help to mold it into a human ami y Greatly begin! though thou have time But for a line, be that sublime. The faculty and I Wish you success and happiness for the future. Your principal and friend, nf fylffaaa QR. Lloyd Miller, who this year has once more assumed the responsibilities of theassistant principalship at Riverside, will always be remembered by the Senior class for his cheerful smile and benevo- lent disposition. Friend--Advisor! He has never re- fused aid to any who came to him. Skip- per! Lighthouse, Alumni, Parent-Teach- ers Organization all have received Mr. Miller's helping hand. We leave to the future Senior classes his friendly personality and hope We may see him in the halls of Riverside for a long time to come. IRVIN HIMMELE, Former Asst. Principal 2 LLOYD A. MILLER, Assistant Principal . Irvin Himrnele was second in command of the ship Riverside in the year 1948. He came to us when he had completed his duty in the service of the United States. Mr. Hlmmele proved an able leader in every division. He greatly aided the' stud- ents who published last ayleafs Skipper and gave untiring effort to student activities. We extend our best Wishes to Mr. Him- mele in his position as Assistant Principal of Lafayette and hopeyfor his happiness and prosperity in future years. FACULTY LLOYD A. Each one, individually, is an integral part of his community. It is important that each of us, having made his contribution to the school, should prepare himself to make a worth-while contribution to our community. 4 'P49 40 EL SS UF 1949 RETROSPECT When we came to school as freshmen in September forty-five, We often lost our way around the halls of Riverside, We struggled through our Algebra and General Science too, Complaining 'bout vacations 'cause We thought they were too few. The year went on without a pause, June rolled around before We had a chance to practice the name of Sophomore. With flying colors, we came back to do all that was needed, Then, to our joy, fate took a hand and for us intercededg It happened that despite reproof lest we should miss a day, The teachers took a week from school to strike for better pay. But we returned again, alas. and struggled through each test, To reach the rack of Junior, we all did our very best. We cheered our team at football games and basketball as well, And when we won those baseball games, you should have heard us yell On Junior Day we planted a treeg now surely you'll agree, That a Junior tree that actually lives is something new to see. It seemed our Prom was hardly past before the year was ended, And senior rooms of Riverside their welcome doors extended. The job of being seniors gave us a feeling of great pride, For now we were the very top, the leaders of Riversideg We've tried to set examples of faith and loyalty, And now, at last, to graduate becomes a reality. We, the Class of Forty-Nine, do make this pledge sincereg To revere her name and ne'er forget our Alma Mater dear. Ann. E. Nagle 16 Row l. UNIUH GIRLS HE Junior Girls of 1949 have taken much delight in participating in the scholastic and social activi- ties nere at school. We are proud that one of us, Petronella Panek, had the highest average in the school. At Christmas time, the girls were glad to send a Care Package to a needy family in Germany. For three years we have looked forward to the organization of our Junior Class. At last we have elected our officers, and all of us have enjoyed Working on committees for the Junior Day Program and the mr Prom. We have really had a wonderful year and all hope next year's Juniors will have as muc . 42 Rowl Row 2. Row 3. Row 4. ROWS ROWS Row 7. Row8 Dolores J. Approximately fifty girls partici- pated in other sports during the year to earn their letters. Twenty-seven girls lived up to their title as 'The Wise Fools by being on the Honor Roll. Many girls also sang in the chorus and played in the band and orchestra. At the. advent of another year we introduced ourselves to the student body at our assembly program in October. Each member explained her duties and responsibilities and asked for continued cooperation. During the few months of 1948 we have been successful m selling pencils, football pins, geaniens and many other articles. With the money we gained a Valentine party for the Large ounci . Many of our activities included outside interests. The council members attended a tour of the Good Will Industries early in the year. In January a reunion dinner was held at Leon- ardo's Restaurant for the members of last year's Council. We should like to express our gratitude to the faculty and to the student body for assist- ing us in carrying out our duties. We sincerely hope that our efforts have made R.iverside's government a stronger and more efficient one. 54 Row l. Donald Zimmerman, Norman I-lolmskog, Carl Ivancic. Row 2. BUYS' ITIUNFYH. 1 HE Boys' inner- Council, under the capable guidance of Mr. Arthur Dovsmes, successfully Jnsti tuted democratic principles within the student body of Riverside High School. u The ninth year of its existence began with a boys' assembly, at which the members of the Coun c1l were introduced and their duties explained. The most successful venture this year was the sale of school pencils with the year's basketball schedule printed on them. It is hoped that future Councils will endeavor to carry on those objectives for which the organi zation was founded. S. has perhaps the smallest broadcasting time of any station, but its daily .newscasts are most important to the students of Riverside. This is one of the most essential operations in the school since it saves precious time in the announcement of school activities. Everything from club news to radio skits are heard over our Station R. H. S. Announcers on the staff were selected by elimination in the fall of the year. They are: jack Barnes, Jeanne Cameron, Florence Fichtl, Dorothy Garstka, Bruce Gilbert, Carol Graap, Helen Speers, and Albert Tesluk, and Alberta Delemater. After several weeks of directing practice, Coach Carl Spitzer brought forth a great combination. Its king pins are Norman I-Iolmskog and Charles Millidge as forwards, Ray Jones, captain of the team as center, and Jim Clark and Donald Zim- merman at guard positions. After three losses at the start of the season, the Riverside Five won a thrilling victory over Lafayette to the tune of 49 to 48. Norman Holm- skog was top scorer with 22 points. SWIMMING HIS year we opened our season with Lafayette, followed by an engagement with our greatest rival, Kensington. Our swimming stars are often chosen from W powerful freshman teams. A few, in whom we place a great deal of confidence are: Charles Steel, whose specialty is the backstrokeg John Smaldino, the ZOO yard free style artist, and Lloyd Cassidy with his favorite breaststroke. The team, coached by Mr. McColgan, and man- aged by Robert Roth, has performed very well this season. '77 Row 1. Steven Toth, Donald Silverburg, Robert Jackson. Row 2. George Hambruch, Albert Ihle, Gary Adams, Mr. Miller. TENNIS VEN with the loss of three men from last year, our tennis team through the competent coaching of Mr. Lewis Miller should have a successful season. Veter- ans Albert lhle, George Hambruch, Robert Jackson are expected to be the outstanding players. Other net men who saw action last year and are expected to play a prominent part this season are Donald Silverburg, Joseph Toth, Gary Adams, Donald Nessler. The team in previous years has had difficulty in practicing because of the inadequacy of tennis courts in the vicinity. However, the two courts that have been prepared last summer in Riverside Park will provide sufficient practice grounds this year. 78 Row 1. TH EE ITH spring just around the corner, the prospects for the track team look good. This sport which has always been over-shadowed by the nation's favorite outdoor game, baseball, is nevertheless growing in popularity every sea- son. Under the coaching of Mr. Spitzer, the team will J again this year be in the winning class. The team has always been hampered by late springs, in getting into 1 practice early. To combat this difficulty, the team opens practice indoors by running in the third floor corridors. With no outstanding stars except for John Rollinson in the mile and Speedy McCready in the dash, the team boasts all around point getters. I-Iere's hoping they have a suc- cessful year. 79 Row 1. P ' Participation in one major sport each year was compulsory. This sport might have been basketball, volleyball, baseball or swimming. To earn the remaining points required, these girls took part in bowling, badminton, ice skating, roller skating, or a variety of other sports. This achievement indicates not only the reward for persistent effort but also the importance of maintaining high physical standards. 80 Row l.
