After an organization meeting early last fall, we held our annual girls' assembly at which we introduced ourselves to the students, explained our responsibilities, and asked for their cooperation. ln the months that followed, we busied ourselves with successful sales of feathers, bea.nies, pencils, auto- mobile plates, and banners. We also sent money and gifts to several charity organizations. Ruth Heinz, Marilyn Barnd, and JoAnn Tracy have done exceptionally well in choosing dependable moni- tors. Mary Devosich and Catherine Schiketanz have kept the lunch periods running smoothly. We have endeavored to carry on the high standards set down by former Councils. I 26' ll O cheer and help children in Buffalo's orphan homes, is the newly adopted purpose of the Tri-Y. ln carrying out this plan the thirty junior and senior girls of the Tri-Y held a Christmas party for the children of the Protestant Home for Unprotected Children. In addition to their regular meetings, they held special sports nights at the Y. W. C. A where the girls swam or played basketball or ping pong. The Tri-Y also sponsored a Sac Dance, .a sleigh ride and a visit to the city morgue. Boy and Girl Relationships was a topic discussed by Rev. Schieter at one of their meetings. Catherine- Schiketanz represented the Riverside Tri-Y at the annual state-wide assembly. Marilyn Case and Ioan Fischer were the representatives of Riverside at the area council meetings. As an additional project the Riverside Tri-Y, in cooperation with the other Hi-Y clubs of New York, helped to raise money for the World Youth Fund. A. has been completed. The chapter contains the activities of young men who have met each Wednesday to up- hold the ideals of Hi-Y -- Religion, Education, and Recreation. We engaged in many activities this year. Among our social programs were joint meetings, dances and hayrides. We had delegates to conferences and conventions dedicated to the purpose of educating us to be- come better citizens and .to prepare us .to become leaders ln the government of our city, state, and country. Un- der his able and guiding hand the club finished a very successful year. ,,'fk..f- VV ' 6603 HIS year the Y-Teen Club, formerly the Girl Reserves, began a successful year with our traditional candlelight ceremony at the Kenmore Y. W. C. A. We received approximately fifty girls into our member- ship by presenting them with new pins and membership cards. Throughout the year Riverside acted as hostess to the Technical and Seneca Hi-Y Clubs at dances held at the Kenmore Y. W. C. A. In November, our club, in cooperation with the other clubs of Buffalo, held a very successful square dance with the Technical Hi-Y attending. We expressed our Christmas spirit with a party for the Protestant Home for Unprotected Children. We enjoyed teaching the children folk dances and serving them cake and candy. They expressed their ap- preciation by an impromptu amateur show. We will continue to build a fellowship of high school girls who strive to better their lives and their com- munity in the years to come. This year the Club toured the Courier-Express building and studied the preparation of a great city news- paper. Periodically through the year we prepared and published the school newspaper - The Lighthouse. The social program consisted of two hayrides, a Christmas party in the Faculty cafeteria and the annual dimer for the new officers. Each year the Commerce Club presents a beautiful pin on Senior Day to the member of the club who has rendered the greatest service to the school and to the organization. Preliminary try-outs and final elim- inations are held in order to select announcers. The selected group then is active every day of the school year. The members rotate, acting as announcers, each for a period of one or two weeks. The material broadcast comprises announcements of all sorts, advertising in the form of skits or rhymes, and quotations are read as an initial thought for each day. From this group, students have been selected for announcing and reading in various assembly programs. The technicians are a vital part in this group. They are a busy crew with checking the P. A. The opening practice game against Bennett indicated our strength in the line. Then Lafayette with a powerful passing attack found our defenders impregnable and a tie game resulted. Against Hutchinson C13-OJ, Fosdick-Masten C13-Ol, Grover Cleveland C38-OJ and Seneca Q6-OD, our running attack was sparked by Johnnie Kulsar, Gerry MCI-Iale, and Pat McGinty. This left us tied with Lafayette for the championship of League I. The playoff game was a bruising encounter in which we were nosed out 7-6. The Thanksgiving Day game against Mc- Kinley was played under severe conditions of cold, in a foot oi Snow, and the score of 19-6 against us does not indicate the closeness of the game. All-High team positions were won by John Kulsar and Tom Bryce. Leo Wachala was placed on the Second All-High team. Under our new coach Mr. Vihlliam McCo1gan a number of new prospects were uncovered which augurs well for the performance of the squad in the races of the next few years. Johnny Rollinson pushed Buster Kroll to a new course record, and finished second to make the All-High team for the second year. Riverside finished fifth in the All-High race. Brooks, Kulsar and Holmskog racked up high individual scores of 43 and 24 points per game, whlle Goff, Jones, Krall, Millidge and Madej were close behind. Some of the schools have swimmers who are setting national high school records. While we do not have any record setters this year, our boys have performed very well, and have forced their opponents to hit record time. Outstanding for the team this year were Lloyd Cassidy and Ted Duguay in the breast stroke, Don Lamb and Hank Kuta in the 40 yard sprint, Funk and Reinheimer in the lOO yard freestyleg Al lhle and Don Weller in the backstrokeg Smaldino and Steele in the ZOO yard freestyle, Lamb, Smaldino, Duguay and Reinheimer in the relay and'Steele, Cassidy and Cook in the medley relay. Auguring well for swimming results next year have been the fine perfor- mances of our freshman team. It has been undefeated this season. However, based on the performance of our team last Spring, the outlook is exceedingly bright. ln May 1947, Steve Krall and Earl Gildner opened the season by pitching successive no-hit, no-run games. This is a new Buffalo record and may be a record for the entire country. The team won eve game played, butla series of severe rainstorms toward the end of May washed out the baseball season for Ee Buffalo high sc ools. Most of our team played together as the Riverside Baseball School team and won the championship of their Municipal League last summer. INCE the Track meets are not held until after the Skipper goes to press, again we can only forecast the shape of things to come. Coach Spitzer has a large squad with many veterans of last season reinforced by a number of underclassmen who have shown running ability in cross-country. Johnny Rollinson will again carry our colors in the mile with Klepser going in the half-mile event. Zimmerman will run the hurdles, and Raux will be in the tough 440. Pawlik will share with Stevens the lead for the 100 and 220 yard dashes. ln the field events, john Kulsar will probably pole vault, while Raux and Klepser will be in the high jump. Among the newcomers, Cassidy, Martin, Raux look like point winners. We have probably overlooked some rising stars in this survey, but by the time you read this their names will have been proclaimed in the results of the track meets - so forgive us - we will give you top billing in the next Skipper. Promising squadmen who may be varsity this year are Joe Fedor, Bruce Buzby, Don Silverberg, and Don Nessler. ln the fall Mr. Lewis Miller, our tennis coach, held an elimination tournament to discover prospective tennis men. Of those competing Bob Iackson excelled, while Sam Felzone and Erwin Klopp were close behind. We hope to see Riverside's tennis team near the top this year. Selected after exhausting tryouts from a large group of over twenty candidates, they deserve a well earned vote of thanks from all, for their loyal service during the year. ln- dicative of the quality of their work is the fact that in competition with cheerleaders from the other Buffalo high schools, at the junior Chamber of Commerce dinner held in the Fall, our cheerleaders were declared winners and champions of the City of Buffalo. ll . - f Q. The girls, ready and willing, were placed on teams which played each other throughout the season. ' I I NDER the capable direction of Mrs. O'Hern, there has been a series of three swimming meets for the freshman teams. lntez-class meets take place in the early spring with the freshmen racing the juniors, and the sophomores competing against the seniors. Twenty girls were then chosen to represent the Purple and Gold teams, ten on each side. The Gold team won the competition and the Purple team gave a party in March for the winners. ln April at the Spring Open House, the Girls' Swimming Club gave a special exhibi- tion for the parents and guests who were visiting the school. sl ,.. x L93 - OG ? In a busy senior year, the task of attaining 100 additional points becomes increasingly difficult. But those persevering athletes, who can show a complete tally of 500 points, deserve the public recognition given them on Girls' Athletic Day. For athletic ability, good sportsmanship and perseverance, these star athletes surely merit--THE GOLD PIN AWARD.
