THE GIRLS' SMALL COUNCIL The Eighth Girls' Small Council of Riverside High has completed another successful year of democratic student government, under the competent guidance of our friend and adviser, Miss Eleanor Siegesmund, and our senior class adviser, Miss Alene Snall. After we became organized, last October, we held our annual girls' assembly during which we introduced ourselves to the students and explained to them our duties and responsibilities as mem- bers of the Council. The following months saw a series of successful sales of such articles as Riverside feathers, transfers, beanies, automobile plates, banners, and pencils. With the profits of these enterprises we purchased for the school, one hundred monitor pins for members of the Large Council and two prayer books recommended by Miss Ruth Zeh. Our Christmas party for the members of the Large'Council was held in the dining room short ly before the Christmas vacation. At this time we should like to express our gratitude to the faculty and the student body for the confidence they placed in us and for their generous assistance in making our tasks simple and pleasant. The year 1947 marks the seventh anniversary in which the government of Riverside High School has been in the hands of representatives elected by the student body. This year, the council once more functioned un- der the guidance of Mr. Lloyd Miller, whose cheerfulness and generous assistance created a spirit of coop- eration within our group. Our calendar for 1946-1947 contained many a red letter day, adding to our growth and stature as an or- ' ganization. As customary, a boys' assembly was called by the Council early in the semester at which the new officers were presented a.nd their respective duties outlined. The student body, recognizing the impor- tance of efficient management, promised indivudual cooperation in all our plans. Our first venture, the Fall Sports Festival, paved the way for many enjoyable dances in our school gym. Soon the holidays were upon us. True to the spirit of Christmas, the Council donated a portion of its funds to help spread good cheer among deserving families of our community! The progress of the Boys' Inner Coimcil has been a direct result of responsibilities accepted and carried out by its members. In their efforts to make Riverside the best of high schools, they have relinquished per- sonal glory for the unsung dutles'of an efficient student government. As the years continue, may the effectiv- ness of the Student government programs become more apparent and the vital force of democratic govern- ment it represents be a standard for future Boys' Councils. Can you imagine what our assemblies would be without the music that our orchestra provides. The or- chestra is also essential for Junior and Senior Day Programs and for the annual Commencement exercises. We tried to do our part by contributing to the Ioint Charities' Appeal and Hi-Y Scholarship Fund. Our Club, now numbering thirty, has enjoyed many activities this year including a trip to the Courier Express, an all-sports' night held at the Delaware Y.M.C.A. where our meetings are conducted, a joint meeting with Tech's Hi-Y, and a talk by Mrs. Lillian Kirk on radio personalities. Besides this, we held a Holly Hop, the most successful of the season, followed by a Christmas party attended by our advisers, Miss Jean Irwin and Mrs. Helen Swartz. In the spring we held a Splash Party at the Y, climaxing our activities with the annual Tri-Y dinner. We were represented by a large group at the Sunrise Service Easter morning. As customary, the last event of the season is the presentation of the Tri-Y service award. This a- ward, given to one girl of the 1947 Class, represents a year of outstanding service to Riverside High School as well as Tri-Y. This has been an enjoyable year for all Tri-Y members and we feel that we have benefited much by our membership and activities in the club. This chapter contains the activities of 35 young men, meeting each Thursday to uphold the ideals of Hi-Y -- Religion, Education, and Recreation. Our activities this year were many and varied. We enjoyed the hayride, joint meetings, dance and picnic prepared by our program committee. To balance this social program, we also were engaged in many of the Y.M.C.A. activities sponsored by the Area Council. We had delegates and representatives to conventions and conferences dedicated to the purpose of educating us to be good leaders and good followers in the government of our city, state, and country . Once more, this year, the Hi-Y Award will be presented to that senior boy who has gained the high est advance merit in realizing the motto of Hi-Y -- To create, maintain, and extend throughout the school and commun- ity, high standards of Christian character. The season started with the traditional candlelight ceremony held at the Kenmore Y.W.C.A. The club installed over 100 new members and it is the largest single organization in Riverside. The club has had many activities throughout the year among which were several ' Get-Acquaint- ed Parties with Burgard, Bennet, and Seneca Hi-Y groups. Our most ambitious project was a Thanks giving Party for the Orphanage where we installed four honorary members. In Ianuary, our club held a joint meeting, dinner and dance with Technical Hi-Y, which is the annual social funfest of the club. During our Wednesday meetings in Room 299, we received several profes- sional people who came to discuss topics of interest and value to all members. This year our club has had a larger membership than ever before and the Y-Teen Club shall con- tinue to stand for friendship, companionship, and tolerance through many more successful years to come. Underwood CUIHHIEHCE CLUB The Commerce Club, an organization of Senior and Junior Commercial students, aims to create a greater interest in business. Its various activities for the year have included a Grand Island Harvest I-Iayride at the beginning of the season. Early in December we attended an exhibition of modern Commercial equipment at Memorial Auditorium. Our Christmas spirit reached its climax at our Holiday Party held in the Faculty Cafeteria. The Lighthouse project, started last year, has continued to be a source of rev- enue to our organization. Each year the Commerce Club presents two awards. At the Service Award Assembly, a medal is given to the member in the club who has rendered the most service to the school and to the club. At Commencement an award is presented to that member of the commercial course who has the highest average in his subjects for the past year. BHUHDCHSTIHB STHFF This is the most recently organized activity in our school. being only two years old. In order to select announcers, preliminary try-outs and final eliminations were held, after which a group of stu- dents was selected. This group has been active every day of the school year. The members have ro- tated, acting as announcers, each for a period of one or two weeks. The material broadcast has com- prised announcements of all sorts, quotations read as an initial thought for each day, and advertise- ments in the form of skits or rhymes. From this group, students have been selected for announcing and reading in various assembly programs. A vital part of this group is the technicians. Checking the P.A. fPublic Addressl system, regulating the controls, setting up the assembly mikes and fin- ally helping with all special events, they are a busy crew. Three years ago, in October 1944, a parents' organization was formed in Riverside High School. Pat terned after the P.T.A. of grade schools, it is the first of its kind formed in the city. Its purpose is to bring together parents, teachers, and students. Meetings, which usually consist of a short' business meeting, followed by a lecture and discussion, are held at the school on the third Wednesday of each month. Speakers for this year include Mrs. Florence Pronobis, Mrs. Ernest Williams, Dr. Edison Farmer, Mrs. Elizabeth Panafidine, and Mr. Herbert Sanderson. In remedying this obstacle, the coach, Mr. Spitzer, had a hard and wearisome task before him. However, by building the team up around a few key men from last year's squad and by drilling the boys physically with calisthenics and mentally with strategical plays, he developed the team to the point where they won two games and lost four. The entire school is deeply indebted to Mr. Spitzer for the truly fine work he did. Among the outstanding players on this year's squad were Don Christman - All High Tackle, Dick Sheridan - Second String All High Guard, seconded by Tom Bryce- guard, and Steve Karll end, both of whom made honorable mention. john Kulsar made a fine record at end and later in the season as fullback, winning honorable mention for his efforts. CROSS CUUHTRU TEHIH This year our Cross-Country team started training early and a week before the first meet, the team was in very good shape. However, for various reasons we were unable to enter our complete first team in the two preliminary meets. In the first of these, South Park beat us by a bare four points, while we won the second. When the All High meet finally arrived, Coach Mineo put in the first team, but our scoring power was crippled when we lost the services of Captain Don Mahlmeister and Don Gillies. The first five to finish from Riverside were: All High Iohn Rollinson- 3rd, Bob Ray-15th, Iohn Pajak-38th, Vincent Devine-44th, and Bill Raux, 55th. Not being able to work efficiently with so many, Mr. Spitzer was forced to cut the squad to about thirty-five promising lads, enough to form a varsity and a junior varsity. A few weeks were devoted to getting into shape, these were fol- lowed by tougher, longer workouts. After numerous experiments Coach Spitzer, finally came up with his winning combination. Rollinson, Roessler. Starting off that first game and winning decisively were those veteran forwards Dick Szaflar- sky and Don Brooks, both good shots with either hand. john Kulsar who performed favorably at center last year, holds down the same position again this year. Giving the starting quintet added color are Stephan Krall, an adept sophomore, and Tom Michel. Top flight reserves slated to see extensive service are Bob Goff, Jim McFarland, Norm Holm skog, Ray Jones, and those promising newcomers, jerry Bolender and Don Mahlmeister. Because of an almost entirely inexperienced line-up, and a late start, in practice due to the coal shortage, the boys had to work extremely hard to get into shape. With only a few lettermen, including Schutt, Couch, and Fritz back at the beginning of the year, the swimming season didn't look very promising. The manager's position was capably filled by Don Oxford, and the honored cap- taincy was shared by Gene Schutt a.nd Billy Couch. Returning to the start line were such dependable performers as Vince Devine, Don Gillies and lack Rollinson, our milersg with Don Mahlmeister and George Papai, our half-milersg followed by our sprinters' George Dickey, jerry McHa1e and William Raux. In the pole-vaulting division, Johnny Kulsar continued his record-breaking achievements in ad- dition to sharing hurdling honors with Stan Zimmerman. Although six of our lettermen are expected to graduate this year, the rest of the squad was made up of lower classmen who will form the nucleus of substantial track teams in future years. Mr. Carl Spitzer, our regular coach steered our team to victory this year, aided by Co-Captain Don Mahlmeister and Johnny Kulsar. TEHHIS As spring approaches our tennis team will become increasingly active. With the return of almost a completely experienced squad, barring any injuries or bad weather which might occur, our school should have a very successful year as far as tennis is concerned. The boys of this year's squad are not only high spirited about the coming season, but also a bit vindictive concerning last year's defeats. This spirit coupled with the able leadership of Coach Miller, should prove to be the winning combination of qualities necessary for the successful completion of this year's tennis season. 78 Cheerleaders Cleft to rightl - Elizabeth Boehler, Roy Williams, Betty Blance, Richard Masson, Patricia Sweeney. CHEEH LEHDEHS The selection of cheerleaders proved to be a difficult task this year. Our squad was finally whittled down to Pat Sweeney, Captaing Betty Blanceg Eddie Flynng Rich- ard Massong Eleanor Pyruker and Roy Williams. Mary Lemoine and Elizabeth Boeh- ler are the alternates. One of the highlights of the football season was the exciting football assemblies. Although these left the cheerleaders hoarse and tired, they always gave the team a rousing send-off. The squad was present at every game, cheering the team on to vic tory. Both the teams and the student body owe a vote of thanks to our squad for their splendid work in keeping up the schoo1's morale. 79 GIRLS' BHSHETBHLL Every year, during the months of October and November, basketball is the topic discussed among most girls who are hoping to win their Riverside letter or pin. The Freshmen, Sophomo Junior, and Senior teams all try to win every game so that they may be honored by winning the basketball cup. This year, the Senior Team has had that honor, and the cup will be displayed in Miss Snell's room. All the girls who went out for basketball are very grateful to both Mrs. Goldstein and Mrs. Stapleton for their fine coaching. The outcome of this last game proclaimed the Purple Team as the champions. Interclass meets take place in the early spring, the freshman racing juniors and the sophomores competing against seniors. The girls can discuss lt with their parents with mutual understanding because both can enjoy it. For this initial effort, they are entitled to wear their athletic letters presented at the end of the school year. With a closer view of their goal, the junior girls are spurred on to more intensive athletic com- petition. By the accumulation of one hundred points each junior athlete merits and is proud to display her seven -- inch school letter. In a busy Senior year, the task of attaining 100 additional points becomes increasingly difficult. But those persevering athletes, who can show a complete tally of 500 points, deserve the public re- cognition given them on Girls' Athletic Day.
