ar if if .xg puffing ,Slzfwlfe The class of 1942 faces the challenge of the future. At no time in the last 150 years has there been the prospect of so great a change in the philosophy of human government and social relation- ships. If we are to maintain our ideals of democracy in government, of freedom as individuals, of faith in an overruling God, the work must be done by you and the millions of young people who believe as you do. The present burdens of battles in production and against the foe are being borne by those a little older. But the winning of the war will not change the beliefs of those who have been drilled in the doctrines of dictatorship. Their ideas can be corrected, but slowly, and only by a full understanding of the values received through a democratic way of life. There lies your opportunity. In the years to come it will be your privilege and your duty to help make our country so fine, so strong, so helpful to others in a brotherhood of nations, that it may stand as a source of inspiration and a guide to all. The effort of any one may count for little. But if each and every one does his part Well, you may accomplish the hope of Tennyson: For I dipped into the future, for or human eye rould ree, Saw the Vision of the world, and all the wonder that would beg Till the war-drum tlarobbed no longer, and the bottle flag: were furled In the Parliament of man, tlJe.Federation of the World.

Never has the morale of our country been so dependent upon its future citizens ...... never before have we had so much to defend. We young Americans are unaccustomed to war, but we are not unprepared. We have not bten schooled in the use of guns and planes, but we have these years been learning the lessons of decency and courage. We look into the future not filled with bru- tality and conquest, we see peace and civilization and progress. Our task is more than actual com- bat with the enemy, for ours is the task of rebuilding the world on a sound democratic basis, in the years following the final victory. The liberal education which our democratic country has given us will then show its tme worth. America has found democracy and education inseparableg we pray that it shall always remain so. U

.ibeckcafion if if if Today when sacrifices pass unheeded, when there is no time to honor any but the most outstanding heroes, we pause a moment to pay tribute to the unsung millions who serve our cause. Thousands of boys have given up everything they cherish to travel to distant shores to protect our country and her sacred heritages. They ask no reward, they seek no praise, they expect no glory. They go willingly because they feel that America without freedom means the end of our civilization. To those in our army, navy, marines, and air corps, and especially to our own Riverside boys, we gratefully dedicate this issue of the Skipper.
