Y. 0l 8lfU0l 'A' 'A' ir We, the class of 1942, are indeed a fortunate group of young men and women. Never has the morale of our country been so dependent upon its future citizens ...... never before have we had so much to defend. We young Americans are unaccustomed to war, but we are not unprepared. We have not bten schooled in the use of guns and planes, but we have these years been learning the lessons of decency and courage. We look into the future not filled with bru- tality and conquest, we see peace and civilization and progress. Our task is more than actual com- bat with the enemy, for ours is the task of rebuilding the world on a sound democratic basis, in the years following the final victory. The liberal education which our democratic country has given us will then show its tme worth. America has found democracy and education inseparableg we pray that it shall always remain so. U ar if if .xg puffing ,Slzfwlfe The class of 1942 faces the challenge of the future. At no time in the last 150 years has there been the prospect of so great a change in the philosophy of human government and social relation- ships. If we are to maintain our ideals of democracy in government, of freedom as individuals, of faith in an overruling God, the work must be done by you and the millions of young people who believe as you do. The present burdens of battles in production and against the foe are being borne by those a little older. But the winning of the war will not change the beliefs of those who have been drilled in the doctrines of dictatorship. Their ideas can be corrected, but slowly, and only by a full understanding of the values received through a democratic way of life. There lies your opportunity. In the years to come it will be your privilege and your duty to help make our country so fine, so strong, so helpful to others in a brotherhood of nations, that it may stand as a source of inspiration and a guide to all. The effort of any one may count for little. But if each and every one does his part Well, you may accomplish the hope of Tennyson: For I dipped into the future, for or human eye rould ree, Saw the Vision of the world, and all the wonder that would beg Till the war-drum tlarobbed no longer, and the bottle flag: were furled In the Parliament of man, tlJe.Federation of the World. .ibeckcafion if if if Today when sacrifices pass unheeded, when there is no time to honor any but the most outstanding heroes, we pause a moment to pay tribute to the unsung millions who serve our cause. Thousands of boys have given up everything they cherish to travel to distant shores to protect our country and her sacred heritages. They ask no reward, they seek no praise, they expect no glory. They go willingly because they feel that America without freedom means the end of our civilization. To those in our army, navy, marines, and air corps, and especially to our own Riverside boys, we gratefully dedicate this issue of the Skipper. The training they have received during the last four years has shown them the value of unity, originality, leadership, and positive action. Training for the responsibility of leadership has been emphasized this year. Many Riverside Seniors have been cited for their outstanding achievements in intramural and interscholastic activities. Honors for highest scholastic achievements were awarded Mary Kubica, Patricia Lapczenski, Lawrence Murphy, and Janet Gervan for averages of 94 and above. Elvira Diehl, josephine Potembska, Irene Saj, Katherine Mowczko, Anna Pasieka, and Grace Graves were chosen for their out- standing athletic ability to represent the school at an interschool confer- ence at the University of Buffalo, on March 28. The Girls' Council and the Boys' Council enjoyed a very successful year under the leader- ship of Presidents Betty Szabo and james Miller. Originality and individual enterprise have been displayed by members of the Senior Class. Earle Williams, president of the school Camera Club, took second prize in the Scientific Section at the Buffalo Museum of Science Photographic contest. An original play was presented on Senior Day under the direction of Albert Sauerwein and Irene Saj. These valuable lessons in democratic ideals will find expression in the future acts of the class of '!i2. S future citizens, Riverside students are heginning to think ahout their service to the community. Vocational guidance conferences, held annually for the henelit of those students who wish to ohtain information ahout their prospective professions, have lween increasingly successful, enlisting .1 complete roster of students in 19112. Last year an innovation, the Boys' Council, was introduced with an administration similar to that of the Girls' Council, established in 1959. 'llirough these organizations, students learn the meaning of initiative and sell'-discipline. The cooperative spirit of our students is particularly well-known in our scholastic records, Since 195-Yi, the Buffalo High Schools have heen in competition on the hasis of the percentage of those pupils instructed who pass their examinations. Riverside's record follows: In 1951, Riverside was first 1935, first 1936, third 1957, hrst 1958, second 19-10, hrst 19-il, second We sincerely hope that this splendid record will he maintained hy our classes this year. Another line factor is our enthusiastic participation in school war organ- izations f for example, over 111111 students are enrolled in Red Cross activities. The classes at Riverside represent a variety of nationalties who work harmoniously together. Perhaps they do this so well because at River' side, in their training as Americans. tolerance is the keynote. f ff Z- Z ff lq, 3 1 X' 5 X 2 ? 2 1:51585 Z Z J 6 omior KKCL65 Owcem 'A' uk ul' T1'ea.s'1f1'w' Vft'E'PI'B.ffdE1If Bllwjlf Marflml Pmaridezzf Girlf Mafzrlml SC'l'I'8fzII','j' ROBERT SAUERWEIN MARGARET SERVOCKY EARL HOUCK EDWARD ROSINSKI EDITH FERGUSON DOROTHY IVANCIC 4 W . 1 Q 1 Q :gei.99iV5fSf2 ,. f . This does not happen at Riverside because of our many extra-curricular activities. These activities help bolster moraleg they give students an opportunity for self-expression in various fields, and they enliven the day's work. Orchestra, band and debating teams all increase interest in school activities, while the Boys' and Girls' Councils co-operate to help in the efficient management of the school. All these organizations are valu- able assets to Riverside. In the following pages are pictures and accounts of our various organizations. In the past, they have been supported with growing popularity and we are sure that this interest and enthusiasm will not wane in the future. - wil' Ql5l Q E, - - Q J sl 1 A Fifi fl. .L. 1- . - ,lii..l1 -1 il ..- - Cfilfljfigj E .il.l - ,. It is under the direction of Mr. Harold H. I-Iull and meets Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday of each week. Its many duties include playing for assemblies, and special programs, such as the Hi-Y Show, junior Day, Senior Day and Graduation Exercises. Through the years the orchestra has been appreciated. Its members have taken part in various musical contests, All-High festivities, and have participated in the National Music Fest, which was held at Kleinhan's Music I-Iall this year. Many of the student body, who are musically inclined and enjoy playing, find it extremely pleasant to become a member of the orchestra, and give vent to this feeling. The players are always ready to render assistance whenever it is required. WIC know this will continue to be so in the ensuing years. The Riverside High Band with Mr. Harold Hull behind the baton, has again paraded through a very successful season. It began with the On Riverside at our football series of 1941. Recognition must be given to Mr. Hull for being chosen as the leader of an All-High Band which will play at Kleinhan's Music Hall during National Music Week. The organization is composed of the choice players of the city of which many are from our own alma-mater. Several of our musicians went over to Bennett High to entertain at their assembly program. Among these were Julius Kovach, violinist, Phyllis Kirchmeyer, trumpetg Dolores Van Tuyl, Xylophone, John Racz, Pianog Edward Rosin- ski, accordian, with Shirley Menken, Shirley Stauffer, and Sylvia Gross assisting. Besides the regular band, there has been a beginner's band practicing so that they may help in the activities next year. Many happy hours spent here have been both entertaining and inspir- ing. The band's success is due to the hard work of both leader and members, and they are certainly deserving of a great deal of credit. le 1942 Em First Row: S. Gross, B. Austin, E. McLarin, M. The team consisted of Donald Lazarus, jack Wamsley, Betty Szabo, Dorothy Eberhardt falternatej and Gloria Wagner ftimekeepenj Our negative team, not to be outdone by the affirmative, met Technical in our auditorium and won by a 10-5 decision. The negative team coached by Mr. Ravin consisted of Frank Rainone, Caroline Gritti, Lenora Wonacott, Marie Babinsky falternatej and Dorothy Urbaniak Ctimekeepenj The spring debate brought a new subject. The question was: Re- solved that: A publically supported system of Junior Colleges be establish- ed in New York State. The affirmative met Lafayette in their auditorium and received a 2-13 decision while the negative team received a 9-6 decision over South Park in our school. Not only have the members performed their routine duties so well that they have been frequently complimented, but also they have undertaken various new and important duties. The office monitors are now a part of the large council, as is also the library monitor on duty from 2:30 to 3:00g the responsibility for the lunch-room study room, 33, had been delegated to the council. Both the Boys' Coun- cil and the Girls' felt the need for new monitor pins. In order to raise the necessary funds, the Councils collaborated in a skating party. Though the proceeds were used to help pay for the pins, the newly established treasury furnished the greater part of the girls' share of the expense. The annual assembly, held March 24, was this year presented by both Boys' and Girls' Councils. Representatives from earlier councils and from other schools were guests. A play, Assembly Lines, was given. The development of student responsibility in the affairs of Riverside High School is the aim of the Council and of Miss Wixson, the adviser. The other seven members are elected by the boys of 203. Jacob Kirsch has charge of homeroom administration. He and his monitors handle roll calls and notices. Bernard Bunny and Robert Jerome are co-chairmen of the Boys' Hall Monitors. There are two assembly committees: one, headed by Thomas Kelly has charge of the lines going to and from the auditoriumg the other, Charles Herbeck's committee, serves as monitors in the auditorium. No teachers are assigned to the Senior Section. Vernon Rowe has organized a new committee which has charge of exits during fire drills. The official buttons now worn so proudly by our monitors were financed by the proceeds from a skating party which the Boys' and Girls' Councils sponsored December 13th. We joined with the Girls' Council in giving an assembly program March 24th. We also helped collect books in the school Victory Book Campaign for the men in the service. The Senior Boys' Councils have made only a beginning. In these troubled times, such an experiment in self-government is proving satis- factory and helpful to both faculty and pupils. We hope that future classes may be inspired to continue this form of student government at Riverside. THE OFFICERS President .................................. James Miller Vice-Prerident ..... .... Commercial photographers were invited to judge contests or to speak on photography and to demonstrate them. Members took trips to improve their pictorial technique. Williams - President, Carol Wilson - Vice-President, Betty Kleckler - Treasurer, and Florence Dyl - Secretary, who organized and conducted the club activities. The Science Club enjoyed two interesting trips. The first was made to a radio broadcasting station where members heard and saw a radio program in action. On another occasion, the club had the opportunity of seeing a mechanical man called Vader at the Buffalo Consistory. At one of the most noteworthy meetings a talk on the Anarctic was given by a naval ofiicer, Stewart Bautinhimer, a former Riverside student, who had traveled with Admiral Byrd to the South Pole. An electrical demonstration in which artificial lightning was created, spotlighted another Science Club meeting. We are now planning our annual picnic which will round out a full year of social gatherings marked by increased interest in scientific investi- gation. verge olfmci We are proud to say that this year the Student Council has grown larger in size and power. The greatest change occured when Mr. Miller was advanced to Assistant Principal and became too busy to help the club. Another upset came at the end of the first term when the oiiicers and charter members were graduated and left, hence the club had to be reorganized. Our new sponsor is Mr. Downes, who worked with the boys before in other capacities. And when the new ofiicers were chosen, the halls reechoed to the slogan, Kirsch for president. Since the club was founded with the idea of helping boys get jobs and become familiar with business requirements, the meetings were devoted to such ideas as personal qualifications, opportunities in certain fields of work, and application experiences. An interesting film entitled Visiting the Ford Plant, was secured for one meeting. - The boys hope that the new officers and members will keep the group together and that one dubious year will not mark the end of the club. ,Ze Q 6055 'ff W 'W In November a small unit of the junior Red Cross was organized by a patriotic and enthusiastic group of pupils. Our first efforts were devoted to knitting scarfs and sewing twenty-five rompers. When the war came, we increased our membership, each homeroom having a representative, and started our service fund. The Girls Council undertook to make baby quilts and did a beautiful job. Knitting sweaters was added to the previous work, and by the end of the school year, we had turned in sixty-five scarfs and thirty-hve sweaters. Next a list of Riverside boys in service, graduates or those having attended here, was started. We collected books and maga- zines for the Victory Book Campaign, and Miss Cary assumed charge of that enterprise. Miss Marshall headed the knitting, and Miss Snell supervised the sewing and service fund. The service list of names was under the direction of Miss Wilkinson, and may be found opposite the dedication page of this book. In the spring donations were made from the service fund to the following causes: 35 to the United China Relief, 310 to the Red Cross for medical supplies at the front in Iceland and money for the mailing of a circular letter to our boys in service wherever we could reach them. 62 'A' it 'A' This year the Hi-Y show provided its large audience with top enter- tainment, a variety show called Fun At Camp Chattanooga. The theme of this show was the ever popular army camp and its amusements. The show opened with The Awkward Squad, a group of pathetic rookies, entrusted to the hard-boiled top sergeant-Ray Kirsch. The scenes that followed presented different types of programs for keeping the soldier fit, and happy. Bob Kranz and Clifford Alf presented an unusual act of balance and precision, depicting the various sports of our school. Pan-American Influence was shown through a group of colorful and spectacular dances, and included a comedy rhumba of Harriet Reiten- bach and Arpad Toth. No program of this sort would be complete without a good old- fashioned melodrama. Our 1942 version ran true to form. We had an excellent spy in Al Sauerwein, and such an elegant hero in joe Gyulavics. The beautiful daughter was played by Peggy Servocky, and the Poor old father was Bob Schutt. Riverside, too, could boast of its Hour of Charm and a group of our talented girls gave several selections in the famous Spitalny manner. Among them were Phyllis Kirchmeyer, Doloryce VanTuyl and Jennie Archonditis. Our popular Junior President, Edward Rosinski, entertained us all by his accordian selections, and the entire cast concluded the program on a patriotic note - We Are All Americans. No Hi-Y show could be produced without the untiring efforts of the faculty. Miss Ford and Mrs. Schork directed the showg Mr. Hull and Mr. Seibold worked on the music, Mrs. Ludlow and Mrs. Sullivan had charge of the costumes. Other members of the faculty gave their time assisting with rehearsals, ticket selling, and back-stage duties during the perform- ances, for which we thank them, one and all. JW57.. O If the many extra-curricular activities at Riverside High School, athletics is of special interest to the student body. There are several reasons for this. Contests between schools developed good fel- lowship and cooperation. Intramural sports stimulate friendly rivalry and fair play. Physical exercise is not only necessary for developing the body but also for improving coordination and building character. Participation in sports makes for better citizenship. Unlimited co- operation, indispensable in a democracy, is developed in sports re- quiring teams. Respect for umpires during youth leads to respect for laws during manhood. The spirit of fair play which is frequently engendered in competitive recreation often acts as a deterrent to malicious or unlawful deeds. To promote these purposes Riverside High School sponsors athletic rivalry enthusiastically. Regarding sports, Theodore Roosevelt says, If treated as it should be,-that is, as good healthy play,-it is of great benefit, not only to the body, but in its effect upon character. g c c' I ff ff - 5 Qlwi ww A - - 3 f - .- - .'- 1 Y .- ,,, f sf Q 5.41 X. The new cheers tried this year were the Brrr --'- rahs and the Whipper- will. The most amusing cheers where heard on the various letter days, when many a hero's weakness was revealed. When school opened last September, we found only four regulars returning: Alton Massey, who played every minute of the 1941 season, Rolly Reinhard, George Bautinhimer, and Bob Kranz . By the time our first game with Lafayette rolled around, the team had shaped up pretty well under the expert supervision of Coach Spitzer. The boys put that one under their belt with a 6-0 victory. They went out the next week after Hutch and were just beat out in the last 40 seconds of the game by a score of 12-6! Determined to make up for the loss, the Frontiersmen went out the following week and shellacked Grover 13-O! For the first time in three years, the Kensington Knights were able to subdue our boys by the minute margin of 7-6l Next, our rival game with McKinley found us without the services of two of our varsity backs, Al Sauerwein and George Bautinhimer, and when the final gun fired, we were on the wrong end of a 27-0 score. The last game of the season was against undefeated, unscored upon Bennett. Although the boys didn't win, they were able to put over a 6 pointer to make the score 21-6 and to be the only team to score on the Tigers, co-champions of 1941. Although the men of the gridiron did not have a too prosperous year, there were many outstanding players on the team. Among them, Alton Massey, now at Cornell, made second team All-High tackle. Bob Kranz at center and John Ott at fullback received Honorable Mention for outstanding performances at their respective positions. With many of our first stringers returning, we have high hopes for the Harvard Cup next season. We wish you the best of luck! 4. - 68 P0155- Qlflflfltfg ldm When Mr. Zabel issued a call for runners for the cross-country team about twenty students registered. In the second race, our runners nosed out Lafay- ette for third place. These two races were preparatory meets for the All- High meet. Because of a new ruling, ten runners from each school may be entered in the All-High meet instead of the usual eight. In the All- High meet, james Hodge, Calvin Dell, Robert Sheridan, Lawrence Murphy, and Leonard Powlaski placed for Riverside. Robert Fell is holding down the important position of catcher, and making a good job of it. Mr. Zabel is our coach and we hope we will justify his faith in the team. We still have 4 games to play, and our hopes are high. 72 The thirty-eight members of our fleet footed track team hope to have a successful season, with the coaching of Mr. Spitzer no one doubts they will come thru with flying colors. Although we faced defeat in our first meet with South Park we will Hnish the season well up on the list. We have quite a few veterans back such as jim Huffcut, our star high hurdler, Tom Yeates our polevaulterg Bill Kelley at the M, mile and john Woodworth our high jumper. We have quite a crop of new recruits who will be a great help to our team this year. And we know that the recruits of today will be the stars of tomorrow. The trial meets are held at the All-High Stadium on Thursday, and we have two more scheduled. The big event, The All-High Meet, will come just before Senior Day - and will mark the last school competition for some of our old stand-bys. Good luck to good sports! S jrac ZQWL Seated : R. The other four positions are being sought by John Wiseman, Robert Shanks, George Houck, jack Wamsley, Victor McCarthy. Robert Williams, and two freshmen, Stanley Grossman and William Lund- quist. 'The captain, Wfesley Rusbridge, combining his efforts with those of coach, Mr. Sweeney, is trying to build a victorious team. The season will be a short but arduous one, with three matches per week, weather permitting. As the Skipper goes to press, no games have been played. The schedule is as follows: DATE OPPONENT TO B12 PLAYED AT May 11 South Park Riverside May 13 Technical Riverside May 15 Grover Cleveland Riverside May 18 Bennett Le Brun May 20 Lafayette Riverside May 22 Hutchinson Front May 25 Fosdick Riverside May 27 Kensington Riverside May 29 East Humboldt Riding has always been a recognized sport a Riverside, and usually enjoyed for two seasons. This year the club met on Tuesdays and rode for an hour. The route led thru Delaware Park to the Zoo and back. The picture was taken in front of the Historical Building on the first ride this spring. There has been a change in riding, for it no longer carries credit for athletic awards and so the club goes unattended by a faculty member. Mr. Runser is now the official chaperon and guardian of the new members. So far there have been no accidents or run-aways, only stiff legs and aching muscles. We hope that the horses will take the sugar-rationing without a kick, so that we may maintain our friendly relations with them for the rest of the season. A majority of them are freshmen, who are choosing the correct road in promoting their years at Riverside to being more enjoyable. The senior girls playing on the winning volley ball team have the distinction of winning the volleyball championship through their whole four years, from freshmen to seniors. The 1942 captain was Irene Saj, who had lead the team all the other years as well. The squad of freshmen gave the seniors keen competition in basket- ball, but the seniors emerged triumphant. At the conclusion of the class games, two varsity teams were chosen, a Gold and a Purple, captained by Katherine Mowczko, and Irene Saj. The two teams composed of equally divided skillful players, determined to make good, played two close games in which the Gold team was undefeated. The grand party by the losing Purple team closed the basketball season. The swimming enthusiasts met twice a week after school under the direction of Mrs. O'Hern. In the intramural competition, the seniors were victorious. In the closely run race between the Purple and Gold, the Gold team, captained by Carol Pfeiffer, victored over Patricia Mc- Ginty's Purple team by an arm stroke. Batter up! These words could be heard on the school grounds by the girls who were anxious to get the baseball season started. The girls are practising the national game with the same good feeling as shown in other sports. In contrast to team sports, we also have more individual sports scheduled. Horseback riding is a two season activity, and popular enough for the riders to form their own club. Bowling and iceaskating are also on the winter calendar, along with Badminton, Hiking, Bike Riding in the fall, and tennis in the spring complete the list of games promoted by our school. We are deeply appreciative of Mrs. Stapleton, Miss WoelHe, and Mrs. O'I-Iern, who willingly gave much of their time to enthusiastically, and splendidly direct the girls in after school activities. 76 PURPLE TEAM Carol Pfeiffer, Capi. Wlien the senior class undertook the task of publishing a yearbook, it realized that it had to be a hnancial success as well as a school record. The members of the advertising staff worked diligently to accomplish this end. The following pages are evidence of their effort. They were rewarded in another way however, These students, the citizens and business men of tomorrow, gained experience in coming in contact with business men of our community. Most important of all, we must not forget that these advertisements represent part of our democratic way of life, for they are examples of free individual enterprise, a freedom we are lighting to preserve. In addition, this section has miscellaneous items concerning Riverside students. These will no doubt recall many a happy experience and bring a smile of pleasure as they are reviewed in the years to come, 'i7 i f-.
