The editor-in-chief, his staff, and all others who had a part in its preparation are to be congratulated on the excellence of the product. ' l extend to the members of the senior class the wish and the hope that the life of the last four years may be but the prelude to a better, a greater, a more useful one, that to each of you may come a vision of the port toward which you sail, a vision so clear that you may chart your course with confidence. If you can do so and keep the course through all the storms and shifting currents of life, with full faith in the ultimate triumph of the right, you will have merited and won true success. May this accomplish- ment be yours. 1 ..- CAPTAIN CHARlES W. WHITNEY And a right good captain, too! He commands a right good crew Lux! Razr: IC. lXl1'lNillIlkll'il. li. May. Mr. llul'l'4'ut. ll. Under the very capable leadership of Mr. Lloyd A. Miller, the club engaged in many interesting activities. Meetiiigs are held every Friday night at the North Delaware Y. bl. C. A. throughout the school year. One of the best meetings was the one attended by Mr. Wrhitney and Mr. Spear. William Connolly was re- sponsible for another very enjoyable evening when Ile showed motion pictures which he had taken himself of the Hutchinson-Riverside football game. Several dances were held and werc well attended. The College Clinic, which attempts to help boys in their selection of vocation or college. was also loyally supported by the Ili-Y. The crowning success this year was the annual lli-Y Variety Show. The show took the form of a Swing School. The varieties, mostly Riverside talent, were introduced as classes. Among the stars of the show were: Louis Sagi, Ruby Menken, and lan MacLean, and Robert Engler with his immortal bazooka. Music was supplied by Ray Griffin's orchestra. The proceeds of the show are being used for the Hi-Y Scholarship Loan Fund and for worthwhile school activities. 60 Seutwl: M. Peacock, M. Roach, J. llendrick, ll. Staly. FI. THE LADIES 0F THE GUIIRII...THE GIRL RESERVES 'lihe Cirl Reserve organization affords both social advantages and opportunities to practice Cirl Reserve ideals, ll0ll0l' to Cod, to one's country and to onc's community. This year the Riverside detail has had a busy Hlld enjoyable season. VI'e've had a hayride on Grand Island, a llarvest Dance at the Kenmore Y. Wf C. A.: we donated Christmas baskets to the needy, and sang carols in the Christmas assembly rogram. The club also gave a dinner for the cabinet members of the other Girl Reserve Clubs of the city. I'l'he annual April Showers Dance was IIeId in the school gym and in May a Skating Party at the Kenmore Rink. The meetings have been most interesting. In the early fall, Mrs. Cooper spoke on What It Means To Be A Girl Reserve. At the Big Apple Party, held in the school gym, the members were taught to dance. Prior to Christmas, the girls made many Christmas gifts. Members of oIIr own faculty spoke on such hobbies as gardening, study of lrish poetry, collecting. traveling, sewing. url, and writing stories. ln the spring, tlIe club enjoyed a swimming party held in tIIe school pool. At another meeting, the girls made candy in the school cooking rooms. Girl Reserve songs composed by members were judged y some of our faculty. From the discussion conducted by Miss Chen, daughter of a Shanghai silk merchant. the girls learned mIIcII about the Sino-Japanese War. The club was represented at intel'-Clllll activities. Clara Specht spoke at the Recognition Service. Many members attended the annual conference at the Y. YV. C. A. and the annual semi-formal dance at the Con- sistory. THE SPECIAL CUMMERCIAL DETAIL Many of the passengers on the S. S. Riverside found much pleasure and profit in the group known as The Commerce Club. Its purpose is to create interest in commercial work by acquainting the members with the commercial world, to strive for leadership within the school, as well as to further the social rela lions ofits members. The membership is made up primarily of Juniors and Seniors interested in commercial work, but post- graduates are also eligible. In order to acquaint the members of this club with the ways of the commercial world, frequent observation trips are made. This year the Commerce Club visited such interesting and note- worthy places of business as the llflarine Trust Company, Remington Rand Company, Mentholatum Company, and The Eastern States Milling Company. Among the social activities of the year were a colorful Halloween Dance, a hayride, a Christmas Party for the club members, a Marine Dance, a picnic at Sheridan Park, and many hikes. They're off with a Hash of heels oler hill and dale, and after a long jaunt around Delaware Park they come to the finish line. Who? Why, our harriers and they finished fourth, too. BEACH SPURTS IV...BASKETBAll The basketball court on the recreation deck proved popular with the Riverside's passen- gers. The special detail called the Basketball Team was moderately successful in the Yale Cup Series played with other ships of the lineg five games were won and seven lost. Considering that only one regular. ,Iolmny Laskowski. returned from last year. a great deal of credit must be given to the inexperienced team and to the fine work of Officer Carl Spitzer. who coached his first Riverside Quintet this year. The narrow margins with which four of liiverside's seven defeats were administered proves that our cagers are a fighting team. The initial game was a one sided tilt with the championship Brownies. Hutchinson emerged victorious by the score of 35 to 14. Nlcliinley administered the Frontiers' second defeat by the narrow margin of 28 to 23. Riverside then rolled up a gigantic score against Technical to win her first game. 46 to 13. South Park was responsible for her third defeat by the heart- breaking score of 27 to 25. The Frontiers ehalked up their second victory against Fosdick Masten 32 to 21. Then two more triumphs followed. Seneca bowed to the Rocks. 33 to 26. and liiast was defeated 33 to 17. Rising hopes were quickly Slll2lSllC'Ll-l10YN'CVI'I'. by two successive setbacks. A strong Bennett aggregation swept to a 34 to 27 victory, and Grover Cleveland barely shaded Riverside. 39 to 36. Riverside registered her fifth victory against Emerson after a hard fought battle. The final score was 30 to 28. In the next game the Frontiers bowed to Burgard 37 to 23. The closing game was played against Lafayette. Lafayette was victorious, 32 to 21. ,Iolmny Laskowski. captain of this year's varsity. placed sixth in the individual scoring contest. and received a berth on the Second All-High Team. Riversideis baseball team looks forward to a brilliant season. With seven regulars returned from last year, Officer Zahel feels confident that he has a winning combination. The hattery of Resslnan and Kish is certain to account for many a third strike, while the infield strengthened hy Rest and Horwath, and the outfield with Herman, Laskowski. Sacha, and ,laremka will make it exceedingly difficult for the opposition to hit safely. Power at the plate is expected from Horwath, Kish. Laskowski and Herman. The initial game of the season with limcrson, at Schiller Park was postponed. and the Rocks opened their season against South Park at Cazenovia. The game was very heatedly contested. hut the Sparks finally won out 3 to 2. Once in her home park, Riverside found her stride, and soundly trounced Grover Cleveland. I2 to IZ. The next game, played against Bennett in Delaware Park was a pitching duel. Despite stellar hurling by Chuck Ressman, Bennett triumphed 2 to 0. The feminine passengers on hoard ship are not content to loll comfortably in deck chairs while the men participate in various sports. Annually, they organize various teams and hold competitive meets among themselves. This year, the Purple and Gold Basketball teams played a series of hard fought games. The scores were all very close, but the Gold Team finally triumphed. The volley ball series was held between the Freshmen and the Sophomores. The Sopho- mores emerged victorious. An unusually large group of Freshmen were attracted by swimming. This group was divided into two teams. a Purple Team and a Gold Team. Here the Purple team won. A goodly number of girls turned out for beginner's tennis. but time did not permit a tournament. Although only a few girls turned out for baseball, these few were very enthusias- tic. This year twelve girls showed great interest in Badminton, and played every Wednesday. On March ll, the girls' athletic division presented a most enjoyable assembly program, in which all the classes were represented. The program included dances, gymnastics on the horses and mats. and exercises in life saving. The girls are encouraged in their athletic enterprises by three very competent faculty advisers.
