ANOTHER TRI- LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP After a disappointing season-opening lass to Southgate, the 1980 Girls Varsity Tennis Team rebounded with eleven straight wins to capture their fifth Tri-River League Championship in six years. The Rebels also tools a State C-D Regional Championship, with Martha Tryba Cfouth singlesb, Chris Pichan-Cathy Waicils Csecond doubIesD, Carol Depa-Colleen Welsh Csecond daublesb, and Patty Depafpatty Sterling Cthird doubles? each winning their flights, The Rebels edged Ann Arbor Greenhills for the title. At the State Champion- ship with the doubles teams leading the way by advancing to the semi-finals the girls finished seventh. Selected by the teammates for DOST season recognition were Nancy Varista Cthird singIesD as mast valuable player, Patty Sterling as most improved player, Colleen Welsh as outstanding roalsie, and Carrie Murray Csecond singles? as team captain. A WINNING SEASON FOR CAGERS The Girls' Varsity Baslsetball season was truly an excite ing and successful one, The girls made several out- standing accomplishments including winning their first game against Taylor Center, winning their first league game against Taylor Kennedy, and achieving six victories overall for the season. This was the first year for a JV. Basketball team at Riverside, Regardless of the season's record C1-145, the team did well in the areas of skill development and understanding the game itself.
