May we take you on a ioumey? A ioumey into the past, to recall years filled with pleasant memories of teachers, friends, and activities. When East Side High School was built in 1912, our country was on the brink of World War 1. The follow- ing years were marked by tensions and sorrows. Happiness, however, found its way into the hearts of ,all with the close of the War. Our new school began its history and traditions and entered the Roaring Twenties successfully and proudly. In the twenties our school clubs became established, and were to play a promi- nent part in the lives of many students: while, all about us, the Flappers, the Charleston,'land the silent movies were becoming the mode. From the heights of the '20's, we descended into the depths of the Depression in the early '30's. During these years, our football team captured the City championship four times in succession. Our track team took the State crown for the fifteenth time. The closing years of the '3O's found our country once more entering an era of prosperity and peace, but a peace that was destined to be short lived. On December 1, the attack on Pearl Harbor flung us once more into the ravages of war. Many of our boys entered the Armed Forces to fight for their country. During the war years our annual was lim- ited to pictures of the graduating seniors, due to shortages of paper. With the signing of the peace, in 1945, we entered the forerunner of what was to be the Atomic Age. Stepping up the science and math programs in the schools became the vogue, especially after Sputnik. By this time, the need for trained and experienced minds became more evident than ever in our country. Now, as we stand on the threshold of 'a new decade, the '60's, we look more and more for leader- ship and for inquiring minds in all walks of life. For the high school students who are prepared to meet the demands of a changed civilization, there is a wealth of opportunity. As we have expanded in knowledge-science, the arts, medicine, and health-we have seen our world become One World. Frontiers have disappeared. We span distances in minutes and hours, instead of days and weeks. These changes demand a new of living and a greater understanding of what will bring We can only speculate: will equal, if not surpass, the last depends upon our prepara- now. aiikrg me
