George Hoffmann We Honor These Members oi Our Miss Andersen On these pages are the portraits of ten instructors who, for more than twenty years, influenced the lives of all who were students in their classes. Because of their diversified educational backgrounds, every department in our school felt their strength of leadership and their kindly interest in the welfare and future of their students. Whether in our high school or in edu- cational circles in our city and state, these were leaders who made their voices heard in decisions which improved our school, and the welfare of their co-workers. While many educators have come and gone from Riverside, none taught as many years as these. In honoring them, the Mercury joins the faculty, the students, and the alumni in an expression of ap- preciation for their leadership, friendship, and service to our school. Whither qoest thou? To travel, to study, to a well-filled leisure? We would all ask these questions were we to sit down for a visit with these former instructors of Riverside. As one decade closes and a new one begins, these teachers have stepped into new roles. Avocations-hobbies-home maktnq-, all these, and more, have be- come the full-time interests of these ten whom we honor. To each one we have said Au Revoir but not Farewell. We shall welcome their visits to school. We wish them well. May each one find the happiness which comes with the knowledge of a job well done. Q, D x if 5 5, n S , g is m ' gf ' is E if lr M May we take you on a ioumey? A ioumey into the past, to recall years filled with pleasant memories of teachers, friends, and activities. When East Side High School was built in 1912, our country was on the brink of World War 1. The follow- ing years were marked by tensions and sorrows. Happiness, however, found its way into the hearts of ,all with the close of the War. Our new school began its history and traditions and entered the Roaring Twenties successfully and proudly. In the twenties our school clubs became established, and were to play a promi- nent part in the lives of many students: while, all about us, the Flappers, the Charleston,'land the silent movies were becoming the mode. From the heights of the '20's, we descended into the depths of the Depression in the early '30's. During these years, our football team captured the City championship four times in succession. Our track team took the State crown for the fifteenth time. The closing years of the '3O's found our country once more entering an era of prosperity and peace, but a peace that was destined to be short lived. On December 1, the attack on Pearl Harbor flung us once more into the ravages of war. Many of our boys entered the Armed Forces to fight for their country. During the war years our annual was lim- ited to pictures of the graduating seniors, due to shortages of paper. With the signing of the peace, in 1945, we entered the forerunner of what was to be the Atomic Age. Stepping up the science and math programs in the schools became the vogue, especially after Sputnik. By this time, the need for trained and experienced minds became more evident than ever in our country. Now, as we stand on the threshold of 'a new decade, the '60's, we look more and more for leader- ship and for inquiring minds in all walks of life. For the high school students who are prepared to meet the demands of a changed civilization, there is a wealth of opportunity. As we have expanded in knowledge-science, the arts, medicine, and health-we have seen our world become One World. Frontiers have disappeared. We span distances in minutes and hours, instead of days and weeks. These changes demand a new of living and a greater understanding of what will bring We can only speculate: will equal, if not surpass, the last depends upon our prepara- now. aiikrg me 'II-XBLE OF C.ON'I I..-TN'l' S A Faculty ................ 10 A Cictsses . . . 22 A Seniors. . . 44 A Activities . 72 A Sports .... Advisors for the Student Council are Miss Patti and Mr. May. The Inter-High Council is an organization made up of one representative from each of the high schools in Milwaukee County. The council meets once each month, at the different high schools. Members relate their separate activi- ties and take up problems, such as student atti' tude at football games, which are related to all high schools. The student representatives from our school are Norman Baker and lane Eber- hardt, who is secretary of the lnterel-ligh Coun- cil this year. Cav . Another big project of the boys is the management of the Thanksgiving baskets which are filled in the home- rooms and given to the Salva- tion Army for distribution to needy families. This year's officers were Harry Demorest, Richard Schmidt, Tom Bauch, and Peter Hirsch. The club ad- visors were Mstrs. Procknow, Buro, Coplan, Trythall, Glat- ting, and Biermann. The main function of the monitors is to handle all emergencies, whether large or small, and to take care of those who become ill during school hours. Taking charge of the intir- mary is a project ot Camara- derie. A faculty member is also assigned to the infirmary for each period. Stage Crew Working in the cafeteria each day becomes an activity for those students who assist the cafeteria advisor and cooks. Some assistants spend twenty minutes each day, washing dishes in the kitchen: others, stacking trays and plates, and still others, managing the candy and ice cream counter. Mr. Nicolai and his crew must follow the directions provided for each assem- bly program, plus anticipating emer- gencies which almost always arise. Their hours are long and exacting, but they are the behind the scenes work- ers of all stage productions. ,ga 1 Cafeteria Line Visual Aids More than fifty boys belonged to Visual Aids. With the help of Mr. Haynes, the club took charge of show- ing movies and slides, and took charge oi phonographs and recording equip- ment for all oi the classes. The mem- bers take training and become skilled operators. They gave their free periods to service in any class where their help is needed. , U Oifice Monitors 79 Students who serve as office Moni- tors devote one period a day to this service. Their duties include operat- ing the inter-school switchboards, delivering communications, and as- sisting with attendance records. School Service i George Heide works at the main switchboard. Cataloguing, shelving and distrib- uting books, as well as checking in overdue books are some of the duties of the Library monitors. These stu- dents assist Miss Paff in the library during their spare periods. Many students serving in this group are interested in a career in the library science field. Miss Patt checks in a book. Learning the skills of the public address system and keeping it in readiness at all times, are the duties of the Public Address crew. The system is staffed at all times to be ready for any emergency or routine announcements. Library Monitors Service Club was established to give aid to students who are having difficulty in certain subjects. These students are tutored during their study periods by members of the organization. The tutors must be recommended by their teachers. Mr. Hafey, the advisor, and the members of the Service Club gave many hours so that students, who will benefit by added practice, may have the nec- essary help. Tutoring Future Teachers of America Club, a department of the National Educa- tion Association, has as its purpose giving experience to students whose goals are to be teachers. The mem- bers learn to take charge of home- rooms, classes, and study halls dur- ing the absence of teachers, they also assist the teachers with some clerical Work and will sit-in on classes. These victories gave us a step upward on the victory ladder, and we hope the 1960 team continues to improve in the winning column. We won our Homecoming game with South by a score ot 6 to O. This win en- abled us to re-capture the Art Krueger Trophy. The championship ot the East Side was also ours with the l3 to 6 win over Lincoln. ln the other games played, our team did a tine job. However, inexperience of the backtield caused a number of fum- bles, and the opposition seemed to have a knack of taking advantage ot these mis- takes to score. Failure to make a tackle on a crucial play, to catch the forward pass and go tor the score, also were prime factors in these games. Our 1959-60 basketball team was corn- posed mostly ot inexperienced players. Thus, the opposition proved to be very stiff for the bucketeers. The team displayed exceptional talent in the free throw column. Most of the regulars were juniors and will return next year to make a strong team. Coach Hafey's boys played all their games with fine spirit and form: and, although they did not win many of the contests, they are a team which shows great promise for 1961. 1 W We have to wxnl Up cmd mn! The five boys who received their letters last year and returned were Rick Bosley, Dick Schmidt, Walter Brown, Ronald Johnson, and Dale Yehle. Coach Coplan stated, This year there has been a large number of boys showing interest in track. Over one-hundred signed up for team com- petition.
