If the students of 1957 were as iet-propelled as the age in which they are going to be living the rest of their lives, what a wealth of well trained, well prepared, well disciplined young people we would have! The high standards which Vice-Principal John Powers would like to see developed in every Eastsider, in order that each one will be able to fill his chosen niche in adult society, are many. However, Mr. Powers' faith in the young people is best expressed in his desire to help provide the necessary skills and knowledge, the individual discipline and good citizenship that each one needs to live in the high powered age of which we are a part. An avid supporter of athletics of all kinds, and keenly interested in the activities of every student, our vice-commander lends a ready hand to all who need help. While much ot Mr. Powers' day is spent in solving the problems of students and being a liaison officer between the home, school, and community, his good nature and humor have sent many of us on our way with a happy solution for a disturbing situation. His own philosophy, To provide a suitable climate in which every student may prepare himself to take his place in the world of today, is eloquent expression of his genuine desire to be of service to our school. Vice-Principal John A. Powers

Principal JJ Merton S. Lean To establish a close relationship between students and teachers, and school and community, to practice a philosophy of living built upon years of experience, these are the aims of Principal Merton S. Lean. With a keen insight into world affairs, the problems of people in a perplexed and troubled world are of deep concern to Mr. Lean. His years of classical training, his appreciation of teaching and learning, and his very deep faith in the young people of our school have built a credo for living best expressed in his own words. Our future lies in preparing for it with eager anticipation. Whether we mold world events or they mold us, whether we impede progress or have a hand in achieving it - all this depends on our attitudes toward the world we live in. Our ideas and ideals, our vision and courage - all are the measures of our own personal abilities to prepare for the future. Mr. Lean's presence on the stage at assembly programs, his courtesy and consideration to all who approach him on any matter- no matter how trivial, his loyal support at the games, contests, and plays have endeared him to all the students and alumni ot Riverside. i WW!
