Through the combined efforts of the chairmen, monitors, and the homeroom study hall committees, all homerooms have main- tained 100% membership in this stu- dent supervised project. The aim of honor study halls is to provide practical experience in the application of leader- ship, self-control, and respect for others. This system continually presents oppor- tunities for all students to practice and live the ideals of democracy. PAGE 54 UNDERCLASS PROJECT FRESHMAN PROJECT Lost and Found, sponsored by Miss Zeman, operates during the entire school day. When articles turned in bear the owners ' names, the owners are notified. SOPHOMORE PROJECT It is the duty of the Hall Cadets, spon- sored by Miss Leonard, to promote proper conduct in the halls during class periods, help strangers in the building, check for open lockers, and take articles to Lost and Found. JUNIOR PROJECT Supervising the auditorium, the halls, and the cafeteria during the noon hour is the responsibility of junior monitors who serve in two nine-week shifts, each requiring sixty students. Mr. Engen, their sponsor, points out that only capable persons can get the desired results and that the experience is conducive to leadership. Dur- ing this school year, the Mercury staff has managed to publish eight issues with the desire to keep news articles up to date, to afford a larger opportunity to those students who wish to obtain journalistic training., and to print stories that we think might be of interest to the student body at East. This has also been an opportunity for students inter- ested in cartooning and business man- agement. Thanks should be extended to the contributors who devoted many hours of writing and editing their work to bring it to the standard set by the Mercury, to the advertising solicitors, and to the cartoonists. It is composed of the presidents of Camaraderie, Cavaliers, Allen Club, the Student Council, and the Honor Study Hall Board. Each year one of the remaining clubs of the scho ol alternates for one position. The last two seats are held by representa- tives of the Athletic Council and the Eagle Scouts. The Cabi- net deals with problems that arise in and around school. The most important things accomplished this year were promoting the Centennial Pageant and assisting in getting our school and the neighboring grade schools to sign good behavior pledges. The president and secretary of the Cabinet represent the school on the Milwaukee Inter-High School Council. STUDENT COUNCIL Throughout the entire school year the Student Council ' s chief project has been to assist with the aid Riverside is giving to her adopted school in France, but the members have also spent much time in boosting the sales of the All-in-One tickets and of the tickets for the All-City Centennial Pageant. Riverside sent three representatives to the annual convention of the Wisconsin Siudent Council Association, of which the theme was Strengthen Our Democracy Through Participation ; and these members returned with ideas for improving our own council. One of the most recent projects in which the council took part was the Cleaner Milwaukee campaign. Miss De Marsh is the faculty adviser for this organization. PAGE 64 ALLEN CLUB Pres. Its purpose is to develop the character and personality of its mem- bers and to radiate friendliness, as well as to interest the girls in worth-while so- cial services. The club is divided into squads according to interests: dramat- ics, music, art, handicrafts, sports, and the like. The programs are varied and interesting. Contributions of food and gifts have been given to the Volunteers of America Day Nursery, Milwaukee County Hospital, and the Y.W.C.A. Highlights of the year are Allen ' s An- nual Snow Ball, the Penny Supper, and the Mothers ' Tea held at the last meet- ing of the year in connection with the installation of officers. Miss Howe is the advisor. PAGE 65 SCIENCE EXPERIMENTAL CLUB QCIENCE EXPERIMENTAL CLUB, di- rected by Mr. Grogan, tries to stress the importance of chemistry in a mod- ern world. Here can be found a variety of interesting programs consisting of movies, experiments, and reports on new scientific discoveries. PHOTO CLUB • THE PHOTO CLUB offers opportuni- ty to any student to learn the funda- mentals of producing photographs. It is not intended as an entertainment, or as a refuge for lazy ones, nor for jitterbugs who can ' t stick to a job long enough to learn how to do anything well. Many students have complicated cameras, but do not know how to get the most from them. Some have simple cameras and some have none. All of them are enabled to produce good pic- tures, or better pictures, even though they may have to make their own instru- ments. The one common thing they must all have is the desire to learn. Add the ability to keep at it for a year or more no matter what the difficulties that occur, and a real effort to appreciate good work; and they do learn. It should be realized, too, that many valuable prizes have been won by be- ginners using simple equipment. PAGE 66 CREWS THE STAGE CREW The stage crew, manned by Mr. Dunlop, is responsible for the scenery, lighting effects, and properties for all auditorium programs and the Junior- Senior play. THE RADIO CREW Mr. Schneck advises the radio crew, which sets up and adjusts the micro- phones for club and auditorium pro- grams and operates the equipment used for the Penny Dances. THE MOVIE CREW The movie crew members act as operators for classroom films and man- age the slide projector for auditorium singing. Mr. Raynes is head of the visual education department and acts as advisor for the crew. PAGE 67 HOME ECONOMICS CLUB Pres. June Thompson V. Pres. Carmen Goland Secy. Joan Waraxa Treas. They decorated literal- ly bushels of forsythia branches to make the second act a riot of yellow. For the Thanksgiving program they made a fifteen-by-fifty-foot map of the United States on brown wrapping paper, painting on it in dark purple, blue, and white, mammoth designs of fruits and vegetables which grow in various sec- tions. In contiast, the other curtain was very colorful, with fruits and vegetables painted in natural colors and arranged in crescent form on the blue cyclorama. Art Club is a club of action. Golf is a growing institution at school, not only from a competing standpoint, but also from a plain interest in learning the game. This is one sport that can be enjoyed for life. About sixty people turned out this year with only a third actually entering varsity competition. The classes, held indoors for the first six weeks in order to learn the rudiments of the game, were on their own when out-of-doors play began. The coaches expect to see a very healthy interest dis- played in the future, for many students have re- ceived a great deal of pleasure in learning to play. PAGE 92 TENNIS East ' s tennis team, inspired and coached by Mr. Lean, is composed of five men and has no substi- tutes. There are also a Freshman-Sophomore and intramural team from which the varsity squad of the future is expected to come. The team ' s tough- est opponents are Washington and Rufus King. This season will show the completion of seven conference and four non-conference matches plus the city and state meets. Future prospects look bright, and there is hope of again winning the city championship. Top Row: Coach Carlson, Tom Laughlin, Warren Sutherland, Rudy Mayer, Dennis Rice, Arlie Schardt, John Hermann, Felix Pulgrim. SWIMMING The swimming team, coached by Mr. Carlson, has wound up another season. This year ' s squad was made up completely of inexperienced boys, who, with only one exception, will be back next year to make East ' s record a fine one. The team practices at the Center Street natatorium, where it has high hopes of being able to hold future meets so that more East fans can watch the team in action. The meets consist of nine events: the 50, 100, and 200 yard free style, 100 yard backstroke, 100 yard breast-stroke, 75 yard individual medley, free style relay, medley relay, and diving. The scoring system is similar to that used in track. Each boy can participate in only two events for a championship meet, but may swim in three at a dual meet. Riverside competes primarily with the four schools that also do not have their own pools: North, South, Lincoln, and Wash- ington The Little City Meet is held between these five schools. PAGE 94 CROSS COUNTRY The cross country A and B teams consist of eight men each. The meets are dual, triangular, or quadrangular being run on courses from 1.8 to 2.4 miles in length. Unlike track, in cross country meets, the team with the lowest score wins, the first- place man getting one point; the second, two; the third, three, and so on. Mr. Pleister is also the coach for the cross country team. PAGE 95 TRACK This year East ' s track team, under the coaching of Mr. Pleister, consisted of about thirty members. Each boy specializes in one or more of the track and field events: the 100, 200, or 440 yard dashes, 880 yard run or mile run, 120 yard high hurdles, 200 yard low hurdles, 880 yard relay, pole vault, shot put, discus, high jump, or broad jump. The manner of scoring is the same as that used in swimming: The first-place man getting five points; the second, three; and the third, one, so that the team with the most points wins the meet. All schools compete in the city meet which brings the season to a close. PAGE S6 L i PAGE 97 PAGE 98 GIRLS ' ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION THIS year Riverside girls have shown real enthusiasm in athletics, for the enrollment of G.A.A. has reached a new- high. The association promotes and encourages athletic sportsmanship and honesty, brings about a closer relation- ship among the girls, and creates an ac- tive interest in sports to be carried through life. G.A.A. not only sponsors volleyball, basketball, Softball, badmin- ton, and archery tournaments, but also gives parties for the members. The an- nual basketball game this year between sophomores and seniors, attracted many interested students and faculty mem- bers. Now, for the first time in the history of Riverside, girls are eligible to v in the coveted R emblem. Candidates must earn 1,000 points by participating in a majority of the sports offered. They must be outstanding athletes in tourna- ment games and cooperative students in gym class. Points are awarded on the basis of team standings, the champion- ship squads getting the maximum num- ber possible. The first winners of the new letter are Colleen Wilson, Jill Moody, Mary Golanke, Donna Jeske, Mary Vcss, and Evangeline Kamuchey. Mrs. Laden and Mrs. Wendorf super- vise the play and together are respon- sible for the rapid strides G.A.A. has made.
