THE MERCURY ANNUAL 194 7 f =6 J) Page I ft PRINCIPAL Our honor study halls, our cabinet, our extra chances for student government, our augmented opportunities to learn to become well- balanced individuals — all these things could not be possible were it not for the unceasing effort and inflexible faith in young people of our principal, Mr. Kastner. Page 4 JOHN W. SCHNECK VICE PRINCIPAL In days to come when we go forth, in nnemory, still, we shall hold the many happy hours spent singing in the auditorium. When we hear and appreciate the songs we have sung, we shall tacitly thank Mr. Schneck, our vice-principal, for the good times we have had together and the incidental knowledge we have gained. CUE CLUB We laugh — We sing can perhaps tell the activities of Cue Club, since they are the words taken from our traditional song. Although there is more laughter than music, Cue prides itself in being the only club in school which requires try- outs for admittance. Before a student can belong, he must display some sort of talent which is judged by the club officers and our most helpful sponsors, Miss Bodden and Miss Williams. Ort- THE 1946 COACH BELL IN ACTION A new spirit pervaded the minds of the fans as well as the team when East Side ' s Football squad turned over a new leaf in the 1946 season. Loyal students and Alumni could hardly keep from bursting with pride and enthusiasm as the team turned in an excellent record for the toughest fought season in five years. The boys, under the unexcelled leadership of Coach Marvin Bell wound up the season in second place in the city ' s interscholastic conference and brought down the house by defeating the in- vincible Washington squad. Coach Bell, a comparative new- comer to Riverside, must be given credit for inspiring the entire student body with a vibrating spirit that kept up throughout the season. When Mr. Bell came to East in February of 1946 to take over the job of coaching our football squad, one of the first things he did was to organize the football boys to begin making a team out of them that truly was founded on the principles of loyalty and friendship to one another. Such ideas as the paper drive, used to furnish money to send the entire team to Madison in August to see the first High School All State football game bound the boys closer together. We certainly will all agree that the pep rallies during the season showed more enthusiasm and a greater response on the part of the student body than has been seen in the past four or five years. A vote of thanks ought also to be given to the fine new cheer- leaders who led us in cheering our team on to victory after vic- tory. These boys who went unhonored by ennblems were neither unrecognized nor will they be forgotten by the student body whom they led in such fine manner. We should also thank our principal, Mr. Kastner, and all of the members of the faculty who backed the team and made it possible for the organization to run unhin- dered by administrative red tape as is often the case in less businesslike schools and organizations.
