Here is our report, ready for inspection! OFFICERS . . . Here are our Aides, who, through classroom and laboratory tech- niques, make good soldiers of the buck privates, corporals, sergeants, and commissioned officers. CAMP LIFE . . . When formal drill and instruction are over, life in Army Post R.B.H.S. takes on a more festive air. Clubs -parties-dramatics-all help us to maintain the army morale. MANEUVERS . . . Drill-drill-drill-and the ma- neuvers. Mock warfare gives good training for officers and privates, helping to maintain a high stand- ard of physical fitness. The co- operation of other similar army posts is essential for our maneuvers. We are fortunate to have instructors who are willing to guide our steps through the intricacies of camp life and learning. Remember those first years as buck privates in Camp R-B? They went off in marshall order because now that we have completed our training we can give a grand salute to the incoming rookies and tell them not to mind being in the guard house or on K.P. duty, occasionally, we didn't mind it. Who will ever forget that first year when we knew little of the general's tactics? we took Aubrey Fanning as our Private, First Class, with M. Baker, A. Marsh, and W. Killens serving him as able bodied assistants. 1939-1940. Then came our second year when we began to appear brighter for all the drilling. With Jeanne Penney in command of the corporals and T. Rottunno, E. Turner, and B. Hill cheering us on how could we help but get ourselves worked into a lather for that third ordeal that was really child's play. And how could we ever forget this year! War in Europe. British refugees arriving with renewed hope. Two of them enter R-B. Aubrey Fanning - Margaret Eriksson Richard King -- Karl Franson -- Vice-President - - ..... - -Secretary - ..... Treasurer - - - - President THE ROUSE of NINET No it isn't a beautycontestg it's the Junior- Going my way, Gloria? Senior promenade. 1940-1941. Bombs are falling in London again . . . the selective service . . . our young men leaving for camp or home on furlough. Jim Lyle, that ole Southern Colonel was the drivin'est officer! How we surprised everyone when we made a record Junior Play ticket sales such as has never been topped before or since. P. Jansen, S. Neumayer, and K. Franson made mighty hard-bailed sergeants but we needed them. 1941-1942. Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. United States at war! Some of our classmates volunteer their services . . . defense workers . . . tire rationing . . . General MacArthur . . . sugar cords. But amidst it all, at last we're being comrnissionedl We're giving many leaders to the world's forces, not actual armed leaders, but strong fighting strength that is necessary in times like these. K. Franson, A. Fanning, M. Eriksson, and R. King were chosen by us to add the finishing touches in our successful careers. Burt Krueger served as head of the student body and together we rnade what we think is a most remarkable record. Taps have been blown so we leave this review on the annals to be praised by the remaining armies passing through R-B. , EEN FORTY TWO Page Twenty-five Lieulenanls HOWARD RICHARD ADAMSON. All of her staff were new this year, however, the freshmen: Ann MacGow- an, Kathryn Craig, Phylis Huntly, and the sophomores: Shirley Southwood, Janet Benson, Isabel Hendel, Dorothy Allen, Eleanor Evans, and Lorraine Gorman really did some excellent work. Editor, Ruth Brehm, Assistant Edi- tor, Jane Rettig, News Editor, Evelyn Blazek, Feature Editor, Geraldine Va- nekg and Sports Editor, Calvin Olson, with the advice of Mr. Paul Stephan, sponsor, and the invaluable assistance of the Clarion staff, have succeeded admirably in the publishing of the weekly R-B Clarion. The Graphite, a literory magazine, was also published by the class. Edi- tor-in-Chief, Olga Novak, is aided by Alberta Pfeiffer and Jo Ann Hunter. Editor Ruth Brehm holds a meeting with two of the more prominent members of her staff. Our future Grantland Rices and Bill Sterns edit the Bulldog's latest sport triumphs. Editing the Clarion looks like fun. Gossip flies when R-B's sob sisters get together. HE ROUSE June lVIal1 On December 11 and 12, 1941, the Masque and Wig Club, under the direction of Miss E. Lucile Shipley, presented a three act comedy J une Mad. June Mad concerns a modern family, Dr. and Mrs. Wood, who must cope with the lives of their adolescent daughter, Penny and Mrs. Wood's college age brother, Mervyn. Penny's heart interest or just a good pal is Chuck Harris, a neighbor boy, however, Penny falls for Mervyn's suove house guest, Roger Van Vleck. Complica- tions immediately begin when Roger shows preference toward Julie Harris, Mervyn's girl! Of course, there is Milly Lou who continually tags after Mervyn. We were glad to hear the orchestra play during the intermission of all the school plays this year. They also provided some excellent music for the school operetta. The band came out strong at several football games and entertained ot a P.T.A. program. Our pep assemblies were made successful by the aid of our band. To climax a year's entertainment the orches- tra, in junction with the band, presented its final public appearance at the spring con- cert, Sunday, May 3, l942. Page Sixty ORCHESTRA: Back Row-F. T H E R O U S E 1 Chnruses The vocal department of R-B High School consists of a mixed chorus of ninety voices, a girls' glee club, a freshmen chorus, and two ensembles: a girls' octet and a mixed quartet. Annual performances are the Christmas Candle-light Service, the oper- etta, commencement, baccalaureate, and P.T.A. programs. Much ot the Candle- light Service is traditional: the candle light- ing by pages, the processional with lighted candles, and the singing of carols by the audience and chorus. The climax ot this year's program was the singing of the Hallelujah chorus from the Messiah by Handel. New features included talks about Christmas customs written by the students and playing of an electric organ by Gene Alders. The llnunt and lin-ed Our spring operetta presented a definitely different setting than any we had had for some time. We enjoyed watching the startling picture of modern co-educational college life on the campus of the midwestern college of Marden. Snooze Andrews, a student comedian and general cut-up, becomes entangled in a misunderstanding which involves the com- pletion of the college's endowment. ln order to escape from the police and from being suspended from college Snooze disguises him- self in a May Festival costume. He is mistaken for the Count, who was to appear soon and who it is hoped will present the school with the much needed fifty thousand dollars. For obvious reasons Snooze cannot reveal his true identity all day. Finally, however, he decides he must clear himself so he ex- plains his impersonation. The Count does not come but telegraphs that he will be happy to present the school with the needed money because of the kindness of a Morden student. Snooze, being the student, wins the respect of the president of the college and his wife, who are the parents of the girl Snooze loves. As a reward for his kindness Snooze receives Dolly's hand in marriage and entertains us with his delicatessen store song. The highest honor a student of the Riverside-Brookfield High School can attain is his election to the high school's chapter of the Honor Senate. Appointment to this society by the faculty is obtained by excellence in scholarship, leadership, character, and service. Every year tour students from each class except the freshmen class are chosen. The actual election is determined by a point system which gives a certain number of points for each A or B grade and allows additional points for responsible service in school activities. The purposes of the organization are to encourage intellectual growth and to promote the ideals of service to one's fellows. Each year the society has an initiation ceremony which is held before the entire school. At Christmas, the members of the Senate decorate the school. A dinner is given for the members on commencement day. This year's honor students had not been chosen as the ROUSER went to press. l Page Sixty-four THE ROUSE Student lluuncil ln previous years the Student Council has consisted of nineteen elected members supplemented by home roam intermediaries. This year the intermediary system was abolished and an entirely new system estab- lished. The present Council consists of thirty-seven members with a Coun- cil member representing each home room. Through this new form of Council, the general weltare, ideals and democratic spirit of the student body have been improved. ln addition to the three dances, the Sagebrush Serenade, the All School Winter Party, and the Spring Party, the Council sponsored dances after basketball games. The Council has, during the year, helped with the Magazine Drive, collected the customary Christmas baskets, and encouraged the student to keep the school clean. Without Mr. Kaiser's skillful guid- ance, the Student Council would not have developed into the able organi- zation which it is today. KUpperJ Heads ot Committees: Standing- P. Jansen, Secretary, D. Bashful Bal: e nr A bashful young author deserts New York for the anticipated solitude of a small midwestern town-o girls' college town. The girls adored him, but he wasn't interested in them. He finds one that he likes, but she doesn't care for him. She finally falls for him after o side-splitting button-button who's got the pearls fiasco that warrants further explanation. The high spot is the third act scene where a burglar prepares to make off with the family pearls. They get them back from him, however, and while the befuddled thief runs around a circle, they do the same thing, each cupping his hands as though he held the pearls. Who had them? Nobody knew, especially the burglar, and when the principals dashed around, faking reverses with the pearls much as a football bockfield, the burglar wept for joy when the police finally arrived. Henry does some tall talking. Well, l declare. Put her there. One and one make two. What doesn't happen at school. ofNINE present What a Life What a Life, by Clittord Goldsmith, was ci light, amusing play at typical high school lite, from which the radio character Henry Aldrich originated. ln the play, Henry manages to become involved in a number ot complicated situations, such as being accused of drawing caricatures of teachers, stealing band instruments, and copying from another student's paper. Henry's love interest, Barbara Pearson, is sympa- thetic with him, but his rival, George Bigelow, takes pleasure at his distress, Mr. Nelson, the assistant principal, also sympathizes with Henry and points out to Mr. Bradley, the principal, that all the cari- catures are true to lite. However, Mr. Bradley does not agree. When it was reported by Miss Wheeler, the music teacher, that some band instruments had been stolen, presumably by Henry, Mr. Bradley determines to expel Henry. Mr. Ferguson, the detective, clears Henry, much to Mrs. Aldrich's delight. The play was presented at a matinee performance on November l4, and the evening of November i4 and l5. Pile driving fullback George Melichar bore the brunt of the team's line charging. Calling signals was skilled punter and safety man Bill Hill. The tail back spot was held down by stellar runner Marty Esenther, and the blocking was ably controlled by Walter Red Denz. The ends were held down by Donnie Clements and Bill Shuey, Clements playing his second year at end turned in a fine job. Bill, lacking experience, developed into an excellent receiver. Supporting them at end was Ray Whiting. Freshman Danny Kennedy and Big Bruce Biggar, both inexperienced, developed into a pair of the canference's finest tacklers. Captain Jimmy Lyle, playing his third year, led our delegation of guards, which included Joe Digangi, Kentlow McGrath, and freshman Don Ferrette. With the exception of Lyle, these boys will return for the 42 season. After riding fifty miles to Crystal Lake, the home boys, with everyone on the team scoring, turned back our Lake friends to the tune of 32-6. Brown and Gold made a sorry first sight on R-B's field when a Maine left tackle bcoted a field goal to defeat the home boys, 3-O. Fighting La Grange through the mud to a O-O tie, R-B lost its chance for the conference championship. Led by King and Ring, York's Big Green fell before our power- house, I3-O. ln the hardest fought game of the year, R-B and Hinsdale played to a l3-l3 tie. Tauchdowns were scored by Honel and King for R-B. Scoring three touchdowns and leading the rest of the boys, Auts Fanning and R-B defeated Downers Grove, 37-O. Glenbard was defeated by the scoring of the two Kennedy brothers, Bob and Gene, in the final game of the year, l3-O, giving R-B a second place in the league race. Liqhtweiqhts Mr. Shu'ey's squad of featherweights outdid all expectation as they turned in a season in which they tied for third place. The season opened with a home game with Highland Park. Led by Hill and Clements, the ponies turned in the season's first win, a l9-O affair, Bill Shuey accounting for the season's first touchdown. Crystal Lake was next, with Hill and Melichar scoring a touch- down apiece. ' A The conference opener was a l2-7 defeat handed down by Maine, the conference champs. A O-O game with La Grange was 'followed by a tragic l9eO de- feat by York. ' The tide changed with R-B's lf?-7 defeat of Hinsdale, Esenther scoring two touchdowns and Denz accounting for the third. The remaining two games brought victories by a 6-O upset of Downers Grove, and a 27-i3 game with Glenbard. The season ended with three wins, two losses, and a tie. . i I T'H.E' ROU E Basketball COME ON, GET IT BREAK IT UP HIGH JUMP. THRU THE HOOP. Captain, high scorer, and long shot dead eye, Willis Bebinger paired off with speed artist Auts Fanning at the guards. Tall, lanky Ray Schreiber jumped center and ex- celled in rebounding. A talented trio of forwards: accurate short shot and hard playing Elden Holzwart, skilled defensive player and scrappy Dick King, capable long shot and steady Cliff York, broke through for needed tallies and pigeon-holed opponents' offensives. Furnishing the reserve power and gaining experience for next year were Mark Coons, Duane Reisser, John Sentz, Jack Larson, Dick Capen, Eugene Kennedy, and Dave Jansen. Jumping center was another sophomore find, Joe Kroupa, who fast developed into an excellent pivot man. During the fall season, the girls had the opportunity of partici- pating in archery, baseball, and soccer. Each Friday during the winter months was devoted to ping pong, tumbling, badminton, and basketball. At the end of the basketball season, an All Star team was chosen on the merits of sportsmanship and ability by the mem- bers of the club. . Accompanying the general athletic program were three G.A.L. parties. The first was held in the fall at a near by forest preserve where the girls participated in outdoor games and cooked their meal on an open hearth. The customary Christmas party was held prior to Christmas vacation. Games were played, songs were sung, and gifts exchanged. As a closing gesture, and a good-bye to the club of '42, a spring party was given. Competitive games were played. At this time awards were presented to those girls who had followed the activities of the club during the year. The requirement nec- essary for an award is that o girl must be present at two-thirds of all meetings and after school activities. The seniors receive a large R-B, the juniors, a small R-B, the sophomores, a triangular-shaped letter, and the freshmen, a small diamond-shaped letter.
