Left: These uncluttered lockers herald the end of summer. Somehow o locker is nor the some unless it is fill- ed with books ond papers Below: Student typists Rose Nickens ond Oonno Turpin pose with their typewriter. Michael Longhorn seems to be the only diligent worker in this doss. HOME AWAY FROM HOME On rhe firsr doy of school, ortempring ro open your locker Is one of rhe mosr difficult tosks you will en- counter. Ninety percent of the time you get stuck with o locker thot has o bod lock or o door that sticks. If your first doy of school srorted out this woy. rest assured; you were not olone. Since we must live with these lockers through the entire school yeor, we try to moke the inside o sec- ond home. Many place pictures of celebrities on the doors of their lockers, while others hove candid snap- shots of loved ones (or hoped-for loved ones). There ore vorying degrees of neatness concerning lockers. Some students, who must keep their rooms near ot home, let their lockers look like rhe aftermath of on explosion. Others, who con't find ony woy to keep their bedroom orderly, seem ro keep their lockers free of ony books or papers. Since if is nearly impossible ro survive the school yeor without o locker, we must learn to live with these monsters. In order to moke the opening of rhe locker less painful ond time consuming, we learn little secrets to open them. These may include o swift kick in the right ploce or o Fonzie” punch next to the lock. A locker becomes more rhon just o ploce to store books, lunch, jacket, ond other possesions. A locker becomes the student's little port of o big school, therefore becoming rhe lost bastion of soniry for those of us tripping near the edge Firsr Doy ot School 17

AN EXPLOSION OF SPIRIT Left Riverheod s own ( ockerres. otherwise known os the Varsity Cheerleaders, whip their audience into o frenzy of school spirit with their daredevil ocrobotics. This year's foil pep roily was one the students of RHS were reolly looking forword to After the ex- ceptional performance of lost year's Vorsity foot- boll team they reolly hod something to shout about, they wonted the team to know thot they hod the right stuff to repeat lost year's record The roily itself hod o lot going for It The ever- populor Curtis Highsmith was the emcee, which meant that the roily wos sure to be run in his energetic style Cindy Lull s stunning performance of the Star Spangled Bonner ond the stoge bond, led for the first rime by Mr Goldwyn. both odded great musicol touches to the festivities. The routines of both the JV ond Varsity cheerleaders were bet- ter thon ever All this, plus the amount of energy ond spirit the students hod thot afternoon mode it look like it wos going to be on exceptionally well- run pep roily Unfortunately, on incident involving on obstinate student ond o firecracker held up the pep rally just long enough thot the remainder of the program hod to be rushed. The students of RH5 didn't let this ruin their day. though For the seniors, this wos their lost Homecoming ever, ond they were determined to moke the best of it. so they shouted their support for their fovorite teams even louder thon before To help students get in the mood . the seniors passed oround gorboge bogs of shredded newspoper so there would be plenty of confetti to throw. Some students needed no such encourage- ment They brought their own confetti, the usual complement of oir horns, ond. of course, their voices. At vonous times during the roily, the dosses hod shouting matches to prove once ond for oil thot they hod the most school spirit As usual rhese bouts ended in o four-woy tie If seemed thot oil the dosses hod about the some spirit This is one contest thot will probably never hove o clear winner, no matter how long the tradi- tion continues. Left: School spirit triumphs over the emotions of everyone os the ex- uberonr Vorsity Football ream lets our their win- ning combination of dedication ond excitement. Pep Rofly 19
