MAKING THE DIFFERENCE 14 Sports Proctice If by chonce you went to rhe bock porking lor oround 8 o.m. three weeks before school srorted. you may hove been surprised ro see rhe lor filled with cars. No. school didn’t srorr eorly this yeor. ond you didn’t sleep through August. School begon for most on September 4. but for those involved In foot- boll. cross-country, field hockey, ond soccer, school srorted much eorlier These dedicored athletes hod ro attend summer practice while rhe rest of us enjoyed our summer vocations Some of these sports held summer proctice because they hod to uphold their reputations. The football ond field hockey reams hod great seasons lost yeor which they were expected to repeat. One of the hardest things ro do in o sport is repeot o greor season because old players leove. ond new players Right Success is only o stone's throw owoy for senior Ricky Anderson Ricky was seen practic- ing with rhe Varsity Football team over rhe summer break. Above: Drilling was on important port of summer practice for rhe Field Hockey ream The pioyers showed their dedication by sweating it out in rhe summer hear must be rought rhe fundemenrols of the sport The competition olwoys likes to beat rhe former cham- pions; therefore, ony little extra prepororion helps o great deal The problem with summer proctice is rhe heor During rhe middle of August, rhe temperature often reoched rhe high eighties by 8 o.m. ond sometimes rhe mercury reoched the nineties by rhor time. If you con imogine running around in this type of heor for two or three hours, you'll hove o new appreciation for these people So. let's heor it for those devoted athletes who woke up eorly in the morning to work out for three hours in rhe grueling heot. It's this kind of dedication that mokes RHS one of rhe best schools on Long Island.
