The theme was “Caps Off to ’83.” Our newly elected King and Queen, Pat Harris and Tina Hale, were also co-captains of the victorious football and cheerleading squads (respectively of course). Despite an unfortunate incident in which the float and its passengers tumbled to the ground and all of the controversy sur- rounding the judging of the floats, the Seniors proved that the class of '83 is a winning “team.” The underclassmen's floats were all quite original. The Sophomore float took first, their theme was Sophomores Soaring Over the Blue Waves.” The Juniors took third with their float. Its theme was The Sun Shines Brighter on a Blue Wave.” In fourth place was the Freshman float their theme being “R.H.S. Blue Waves Crash in on the Shores.” The Homecoming Court contained three handsome couples, they were: Juniors — Jamie Ciolino and Matt Cassidy; Sophomores — Lisa Her- nandez and Jim Roach; Freshmen — Kristin Paganini and Kevin Zebrowski. 4 6 The Homecoming Dance, following years of tradition, was held the night of the Homecoming Game. Members of the triumphant football team, d.j. Kevin Davis, the chaperones, our King, Queen, Court, and a surprising number of students arrived with their dancing shoes on. The time was 7:30 and the place was U.A. The Seniors sold refreshments and everyone got out on the floor at least once. (Well, almost everyone) The dance was a success, and the Homecoming victory added a nice touch! 7 The 1982 Blue Wave Football Squad, proved that Riverhead is becoming a school to beware of. In its fourth year after coming off of austerity, R.H.S.’s Varsity squad stomped the undefeated Sayville team, 10 to 6. Outstanding performances in the Homecoming game were given by exchange student, Fred Liedholm, who kicked a 44 yard field goal, and Ken Block, who tossed a touchdown pass to Matt Cassidy. 8 12 November 19, 1982 September 5, 1979, this is where our class history begins. It is a history different from any other because we have had the honor of having the most advisors in a four year period. Our Freshman year started off with the election of our officers. Cheryl Blasko became our president, Craig Hughes, vice-president, Cathy Bilski, secretary, and Jeff Fischer, treasurer. A new teacher, Miss Briganti, was appointed our ad- visor. We soon began on a float with the theme “Nothing is Too Heavy for Us” even though we came in last, it was an adventure for all involved. Our King was Bill Artale and our Oueen was Sheila Booker. Our first fund raiser was an M M sale. Then we sold memo-boards. Jim Fedoryk was the top salesman for the memo-board sale. Our Hall Day idea was Freshmen Favorites.” Unfor- tunately it was not the judges' favorite. In May we elected, Andrea Scherzer, our president and Dawn Dorsty, our vice-president. Cathy and Jeff were re-elected. When we returned in September, we found that our vice-president had moved and our class advisor was gone too. Keith Miles took Dawn's place as vice-president. Plans for our float got under way and we began to work in Charlie McKay's Barn. Although there were rumors that our float Sophs Shooting for the Stars, had been disqualified because of lack of originality, we actually got last place again. Queen Sue Haupt and King Mark Reeve represented us in the court. With the sudden departure of our advisor, our class had hit a low point. We tried to revive class spirit by selling carnations for Valentine’s Day, which was a favorable venture. 14 Mr. Norris volunteered to be our advisor until we could find another one. He organized a ring committee of eleven members with Chris Worthington as chairperson and a Valentine's Dance in which the class made about a $100 profit. Our class colors, red and white, had been assigned to us for the G.O. Basketball Tournament. Mr. Norris coached our team to victory. May 1981 was a busy time for the class of '83. Elections were approaching, and we were having a Pancake Breakfast. However, the outcome of the Breakfast was not as promising as we had anticipated. Our elections were held and Andrea Scherzer was re-elected as president, and newly elected officers were, vice-president Jackie Brown, secretary Cheryl Blasko, and treasurer Danny Nielsen. When we returned in September as Juniors, again we were without an advisor. Mr. Hoyt soon filled this posi- tion. We also received our class rings this month. 15 At the barn we began working on our float with the theme Juniors Flying High but again we finished last. What else is new? Nadine Spacek and Douglass Cirruzzo were King and Queen. Our class co-sponsored a Holiday Dance which was more promising than the Valentine's Dance and again the results were favorable. Our team once again won the G.O. Basketball Tournament with the help of Mr. Hoyt and Keith Jefferson. If we win again this year the class of '83 will have the only team to win three consecutive championships in the history of the Tourna- ment. Elections for senior officers were held in May and once again Andrea Scherzer was elected president. Craig Hughes became our vice-president, Risa Anker our secretary and our treasurer, Cheryl Walsh. 16 As school began so did our magazine drive and our tradition of being without an advisor the first day of school. Our magazine drive went well, with our class putting close to $5,000 in the bank. Top sellers were Cheryl Blasko, Mike Lao, and Chris Worthington. We still had the problem of no advisor, however, the problem was solved with sud- den appearance of Mrs. Mommy” Moses and Mrs. Aunt Mary Brown. Things were beginning to look up. We started working on our float, which was a tribute to the class with the theme “Caps off to '83,” and all seniors hoped for first place. It appeared that we had won first, but due to a mathematical error, we had to settle for second place, at least it was not last. However, cheers soon ceas- ed after the back board gave way and Diane McCabe, Cheryl Walsh, Paul Wulforst, Lisa Wedel, Cheryl Blasko, and Dore VanSlyke went tumbling onto the parking lot. The news review entitled our float Doomed. That night we co-sponsored the Homecoming Dance with Student Government. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS — Secretary — Risa Anker, Vice President — Craig Hughes, President — Andrea Scherzer, Treasurer — Cheryl Walsh. Senior Class Advisors: Mrs. Mary Brown, Mrs. Barbara Moses. At the dance Queen Tina Hale and King Pat Harris were crowned. It was a profitable weekend for the class making close to $400 from the dance, float and a Homecoming carnation sale. At this time plans for our Senior Trip to Tamiment Resort in April are coming together. Our officers are look- ing into places for the Prom. Graduation has been planned for indoors. The history of the class of ’83 will be a closed book on June 27, 1983. Charlie has contributed his time and labor over the past four years to help the Class of 1983 construct its floats. The construction of the Homecoming float is probably the single most important and difficult project faced by any class during the school year. In addition to his incomparable support, Charlie has always been extremely generous in allowing our class to utilize his barn for the float meetings and construction of all of the floats. Charlie McKay has shown a great deal of devotion to our class and for this we, the Class of 1983, would like to thank a very special man. Thank you Charlie! Orchestra Sea of Strings 1982-1983 Exchange Students Rndrea Lopes Fred Liedholn Fred Liedholm The new exchange student attending RHS this year is Fred Liedholm from Sweden. His hometown of Hund has 80,000 inhabitants and its own university. It is located in the southernmost part of Sweden. His school, which differs greatly from the American high school, is called a Gym- nasium. When he returns, he will have one year left, but when he graduates, he will be more qualified than he would have been here. Swedish schools are more specialized. Fred is very interested in sports. He enjoys golf but his favorite sport is European handball. His team, Lugi, is first in Sweden’s major league and fourth in Europe. In his first week here, he experienced a new sport which he thought was strange. His first impression of American football was that it was rough and had a lot of body contact. After a few practices he realized that there is skill involved and it takes teamwork. Fred later won an honorable mention for All-League football for his efforts as a punter. Fred’s plans for the future are pretty much decided. After he finishes his last year of schooling, he will spend one year in compulsory military service. He would then like to continue his education and study to become an MD. Andrea Lopez Andrea Lopez is a 17 year old exchange student from Chile. She came to the United States to learn more about the customs and to meet new places. Though Andrea graduated from school in Chile, she spent her year in Riverhead as a senior. Andrea feels that her exchange to the United States will be helpful in her future because she will have learned another language, English, and also because she will know how people of another culture live. When she returned in November, she hoped to share her knowledge of the U.S. with her fellow countrymen. Edmara (pictured above), is our newest exchange student. She is from Brazil and will be staying with us until next January. She is part of the Rotary Exchange Program, in which our school actively participates in this program. Last year our school sent two students abroad. James spent the year in Calgari, Sardinia, while Laura Van Slyke stayed in H66r, Sweden. Next year Ann Warner, David Bakker, and Liz Stotsky will represent us in Brazil, Columbia, and Canada respectively. 141 142 Kneeling: F. Breest, D. Edwards, D. Trent, J. Hughes. Standing: F. NJROTC at Riverhead High School has grown stronger each year. Traditionally, our cadets score well and rank high in its nationwide Annual Navy Competition. Disappointing is the only word that can be used to describe the 1982-1983 Varsity Soccer season. It is true that the Riverhead bootsters did improve quite a bit this season. This improvement, however was not enough to produce the Riverhead team with a win, much to the chagrin of the Blue Wave players. But miracles are predicted for this year. The Riverhead soccer teams are working at developing and utilizing their skills. 154 J.V. SOCCER — Row 1: B. Gavinski, M. Mock, S. Quick, E. Bannatt. Row 2: J. Harrison, D. Da Baptista. B. The 1982-1983 Football Cheerleaders were a talented group of girls and did a good job of arousing the spirit of the crowds at the football games. Some people think being a cheerleader is glamorous, it may be, but being a cheerleader involved many hard hours of practice and cheering on the team in all kinds of weather conditions. The cheerleaders deserve to be commended. Cheerleaders 159 Cross Country The 1982-1983 Cross Country Teams, under the direction of Coach Husing, did quite well this season. The Boys’ Team with a record of two wins and three losses. The Girls' Team, which consisted of all freshmen, ended with a record of one win and six losses, which is good for such a young team. At the Bald Hill Invitational, the team did fairly well, with the girls taking a first place finish in the Freshmen Race. The boys captured fourth place finishes in the Senior and Sophomore Races. The girls also took third place at the Suffolk County Championship. Coach Husing 160 Wrestling Varsity Row 1: C. Clinton, W. Walker, D. Nash, M. Hudson. Row 2: D. Lindsay, S. Carey, C. Heinze, G. In an attempt to duplicate the successes of the past two seasons, namely, consecutive third place finishes and playoff berths, the Blue Waves relied heavily on seniors Marvin Briggs, Larry Hawkins, and Gerald Rocha, along with junior Darrell Mayo, Larry Hawkins, Jefferson and Fields, who is just a junior. Seniors Dar- ryn Hardin and Gerald Rocha, along with junior Darrell Mayo, were expected to provide additional support, as are Seniors Cecil Elmore, Aubrey Funn, Norm Nash, and Andy Stromski. SENIOR FRMILY To Douglas Love and best wishes from your Mother and Father Build me a son, O Lord, who will be strong enough to know when he is weak, and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid; one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat, and humble and gentle in victory. Build me a son whose wishes will not take the place of deeds; a son who will know thee and that to know himself is the foundation stone of knowledge. Lead him, I pray, not in the path of ease and comfort, but under the stress and spur of dif- ficulties and challenge. Here let him learn to stand up in the storm, here let him learn com- passion for those who fall. Build me a son whose heart will be clear, whose goal will be high, a son who will master himself before he seeks to master other men, and who will reach into the future, yet never forget the past. And after all these things are his, add I pray, enough of a sense of humor so that he may always be serious, yet never take himself too seriously. Give him humility so that he may always remember the simplicity of true greatness, the open mind of true wisdom, and the meekness of true strength. Then I, his father will dare to whisper, “I have not lived in vain. To our daughter Diane McCabe Faith is Seeing the invisible, Knowing the unthinkable, Believing the incredible, So that we can achieve the impossible! With all of our love, Mom and Dad Comes The Dawn After awhile you learn the subtle difference Between holding a hand and chaining a soul, And you learn that love doesn’t mean leaning And company doesn’t mean security, And you begin to learn that kisses aren’t contracts And presents aren’t promises, And you begin to accept your defeats With your head up and your eyes open, With the grace of a woman, not the grief of a child, And learn to build all your roads On today because tomorrow’s ground Is too uncertain for plans, and futures have A way of falling down in mid-flight. After awhile you learn that even sunshine Burns if you get too much. So you plant your own garden and decorate Your own soul, instead of waiting For someone to bring you flowers. And you learn that you really can endure... That you really are strong And you really do have worth. And you learn and learn ... With every goodbye you learn. To Lisa Woolley from her parents Albert and Victoria Woolley Congratulations to the Senior Class” Dr. and Mrs. Alfred L. Scherzer To my darling daughter Tina, this is to express my everlasting love for one I cherish very much. You have made me proud to be your dad in every way. I shall never forget our tender moments we spent talking to one another. Now that you’re about to make a life of your own; Remember God took the the sunshine from the skies And made the love light in your eyes, And with his breath made yours divine, But Best of all he made you mine. Main Street Riverhead, N.Y. 369-1712 191 As this year's yearbook staff embarked on what seemed to be the impossible mission, we felt that there was no ONE person who deserved a yearbook dedica- tion. As the deadlines grew closer and closer, we began to realize that It takes a group effort to achieve success. This page is dedicated to those who have made our senior year and this yearbook a success Planning a senior year is not an easy task to ac- complish. Starting the year without an advisor didn't make the Job any easier for our officers; Andrea. Craig. Rlsa, and Cheryl. We soon began our senior year with the help of Dr. McKee and Mr. Clifton. We were just ending our magazine sale when “Mommy Moses and Aunt Mary Brown came to our rescue. Special recognition is due to our senior advisors who devoted so much of their own time to our activities. Special recognition should also go to our president Andrea Scherzer for all the ef- fort she put in to making our senior year and the past four years the best. We would also like to thank Mr. McKillop for coaching our GO basketball team to Its third consecutive victory in the tournament. A special thank you also goes out to Cathy Bilski and Chariie McKay for their dedication to our class and to our Floats. One year's vacation in the Bahamas is awarded to Jackie Brown and Allyson Moses for putting up with their mommies thru their class advisorship. Which leads us to this year's yearbook staff. A special Thanks and congratulations to Allyson Moses, the only editor who has ever dreamed about living In a quad- pack. and to Jackie Brown, the only person that can put up with Allyson. Mrs. Flanigan and Mrs. Richard deserve a round of applause for taking on the responsibilty for the yearbook. A special thank you to James Esseks, Dolores Quick, Jan Latham and Debbie Meyer for all their support and help. There are many people whom we don't have the space to mention such as Chris Worthington. Mrs. Conforti, and Mrs. Bascomb but let it be known we salute all the contributors to the class and the yearbook and that your help has been greatly appreciated. Thank You. We wish the Class of 1984 and the other classes to come the best of luck in accomplishing these tasks. May you do as good a job as we hope we did. 192 RIVERHEAD HIGH SCHOOL 1983
