Faculty P. 5 Clubs And Activities P. 29 Seniors P. 55 Girls Sports P. 131 Boys Sports P. 149 BOCES P. 171 Underclassmen P. 179 Our dedication this year goes out toa very special, unique person—Mr. Stanley Koroleski. He has shown us what dedication truly means, not only is he the yearbook advisor, but has has also been the class of 1982's advisor since our freshman year—a great accomplishment in itself. As Burke said, Men who undertake considerable things, even in a regular way ought to give us grounds to presume ability. “Uncle Stan , as he is known to most of us, certainly has that ability. With a class of students who were (for the most part) bascially apathetic he still managed to plan an enjoyable senior year, as well as producing a wonderful yearbook. The most unique thing about Uncle Stan is his ability to laugh. Through all the hassles of yearbook and class advisorship, he still found time to have fun. We have seen this through the great times we had at float meetings, football games, pep rallies, and other special times. But his smiles also lasted through the rough times he had to endure, along with a few students, because when there was work to be done “Stan did not get much support. Through all these “tough times” one thing we remember is the constant voice of Mr. K saying that he was cynical... but as Somerset Maugham wrote, “If to look truth in the face and not resent it, when it’s unpalatable, and take human nature as you find it.. . is to be cynical, then I suppose I am a cynic. Mr. K. would truly agree. We have decided that half the problem with getting help was best explained by Henry Wadsworth Longfel- low when he said. Most people would succeed in small things if they were not troubled with great ambitions. And surely “Uncle Stan knows of whom we speak. We truly owe this wonderful person our deep gratitude and appreciation. From the bottom of our hearts we sincerely say THANK YOU!!! YOUR GREAT!!! Toots and Sexpot P.S. May your life never be bothered by puppies, kittens or cheap quoted posters... you cynic ...we love ya!!! 3 In Memoriam Mrs. Irene Underwood January 15, 1931- November 30, 1981 The students and faculty of RHS as well as the Riverhead community were greatly saddened by the loss of Mrs. Irene Underwood. She was a River- head graduate who went on to become an outstand- ing Registered Nurse. Working in Central Suffolk Hospital she initiated the thought and started, the out patient clinic there. She was always involved in community activities. Later Mrs. Underwood re- turned to RHS to become our school nurse. We all will truly value the memory of such an outstanding leader as Mrs. Irene Underwood. Patrick Laskey August 7, 1964- Octobor 21, 1981 Many members of RHS were greatly sad- dened upon the death of Patrick Laskey. Pat was killed in an automobile accident. Those of us who knew Pat will always remember his carefree personality and his never ending ability to make people laugh. The circum- stances of his untimely departure will remain as a harsh look at reality. We will all terribly miss our friend and classmate. Patrick Las- key. Orange Samuel Tuthill February 4, 1964-August 16, 1980 When many of the students of RHS arrived for class the first day of school, September 1980. they were shocked to hear that Orange (Samuel) Tuthill had died that summer. Sam, as he was known, was truly a unique human being. While having the ability to appear out- going. he basically kept his personal life to himself. Only those who were truly close to Sam know his every move. While Sam be- friended everyone, many enjoyed his com- pany. We feel a deep sense of the loss of Or- ange Samuel Tuthill. William (Willie) Roach June 13, 1963-October 22, 1981 At the same time that RHS was shocked by- news of Partick's death many were praying for Willie Roach. Willie had sustained critical injuries in the same accident. These were fatal for Willie also. But as a friend said If just one person learns from this, then it is all worth while . We all will greatly miss Willie, but while he is at last safely resting—will we take heed to this warning .... and learn. Each year Mrs. Sally Brink teaches workshops in lighting, sound, and acting techniques, as well as, directing students in a full length production, and training them, through experience, in prop and construction work. The Blue Masques, in the past, have per- formed such plays as Flowers for Algernon, Da- vid and Lisa. Creeping Shadows, and this year performed “You Can't Take It With You. All of these have been performed exceptionally well. Anyone involved with the Blue Masques re- ceives a better awareness of theater and a chance to find ones particular talent. M Van Scoy, A. Or perhaps you aren’t; in which case you can't be reading this. But I digress. You were, perhaps, expecting a lot of candids grouped around a large picture showing the yearbook in preparation. This we can't provide because frankly, not a lot people were actually involved in the preparation of this book, and those who were were usually too busy to stop for photographs. Heidi Van Scoy is, and was, the driving force of the book. The shape it has and the deadlines that were met are a testament to her energy. As edi- tor-in-chief, she took charge of making sure deadlines were met. In many cases she actually completed sections for staffers whose interest in the yearbook decreased in proportion to the amount of work that needed doing. If anyone deserved those candids it was she. Heidi wouldn’t have been alone in many of those candids, were they taken. Melissa Egan, who only joined the staff in September, took over the faculty section, completed it, and helped out often elsewhere. She did an enormous amount of the dreary, repetitive work required in laying out the senior section with Heidi. Whenever help was needed. Missy was there. My hat comes off to her, also. Even though it seemed like it at times, Heidi and Missy weren't alone. Brian Reynold’s cover is simply great. He deserves a lot of credit also for the way the divider pages are integrated through the use of the frame from the cover. Audrey Schmitt’s photo essay on student life which begins on page 97 is another unique fea- ture of this year's book. I feel this is head and shoulders above the usual scattershot technique used with candid photos in many yearbooks. A. Futch; C. Hughes; A. Schmitt; K. Zaneski; J. Lawrence; C. Sydlowski; D. Trotto; L. Covello ROW2- H Van Scoy; M. Egan; J. Lull; “Uncle Stan”; S. Kirschner; B. Reynolds. 42 “Or . . . Where Did Everyone Go? . . This leaves three other original members who contributed to the book to one degree or another. Judy Lawrence had her share of headaches with the underclassmen section, but as you can see, with a little help, she has it looking good. At this writing Alethea Futch and Craig Hughes are working on Girls’ Sports with the help of others. And Bill Ormandy has pitched in to try to help salvage the Boys'Sports. Since this is being writ- ten before these parts of the book are completed. I'm hoping that they will match the quality of the completed sections. I’m sure they will. After all, I'm an optimist, right? Speaking of optimism and the future, here on page 43 are some individuals grouped around Heidi who helped out quite a bit, especially two. Barbra Buczynski and Fran Breest. These stu- dents are learning the hard way the joys of year- book preparation so that they can carry on the tradition. As for me, this is my swan song as yearbook advisor. After four years of involvement with Blue Peconic, I’m graying. I shuffle more and I often lose track of what I am saying... Now ... what was I saying? Oh yes. next year’s Blue Peconic will have a new, as yet unnamed, advi- sor. Good luck to you and your staff. May you find a few people like Heidi, Missy, Brian, and the others who will put in all those tedious hours with small thanks. Mr. K. 43 R. DeFrese. F. Breest, H. Van Scoy, B. Buczynski. D. Visitors to the library see Library Club mem- bers not only working at the main desk, but reading shelves and arranging shelves of books. They will notice others in the workroom mend- ing books, preparing new books and other new materials for use, or getting materials ready for special reserves. Library Club members perform innumerable varieties of tasks. These students are an integral and important part of the library staff—giving of their time to serve both fellow students and the professional staff. Nearly 1000 Riverhead students have en- rolled in Naval Science courses since 1974, when the Navy uni- form first appeared in our school. Riverhead has earned a place near the top of the 233 schools, located in the United States and Guam, who are char- tered with a navy JROTC unit by the secretary of the Navy. NJROTC at Riverhead High School has grown stronger each year. Traditionally, our cadets score well and rank high in its nationwide Annual Navy Competition. Leadership, self- discipline, and academic chal- lenges don’t appeal to all stu- dents, but for those who do be- come cadets and participate ac- tively; the rewards are self- pride, comradeship and matur- ity. Cadet graduates have re- presented us well since leaving USS Riverhead and the halls of RHS. Naval Science Ill-Row 1: D. Trent. J. Urevich, J. Lorenz. T. Hale. P. Harris W. Smith. W. Miles. G. I consider myself in the latter group. As class advisor since September 1978 and as yearbook advisor. I feel I am in a unique position to comment on what has happened to the class of 1982 in its passage through Riverhead High School. In 19781 began my second year of teaching here. I had in my English class Perrilynn Conklin. John Harris, Alethea Fulch. Margaret Lundberg. Heidi Van Scoy and other notables whom I won't mention only because of the limits imposed by copy space. I do remember you all. however, even Mike Vanden Thorn whose name I never could pronounce. Perrilynn was coerced by the others to ask me to be class advisor. I believe I was their second choice, by the way. Anyway. I accepted and off I went down the path that led me here. Elections were held soon afterward and Perrilynn became president. John Harris vie-presi- dent. Alethea secretary, and Beth Fricke, treasurer. The class of '82 faced austerity its fresh- man year, and although all extra-curricular activity ground to a halt. I recall some high points. The first thing 1 remember about the freshman year was selling refreshments at a movie the G.O. screened on a Saturday. Mrs. Conklin was there along with about 15 students. We did a rummage sale in the spring that year as well. Once again we prevailed on the Conklins and they ended up with about 7000 cans of paint and a lot of old clothes afterwards stored in their stand. Remarkable also that first year was the almost teacher strike. This I remember better than the students because there we were at 7:30 a.m. in the Holiday Inn on a school day waiting to find out whether we picketed or taught. Fall of 1978 also saw the first, and only. Austerity Bowl where we out of shape teachers took on what should have been the Blue Waves Varsity. We got whipped by a score of somewhere near 120 to 0. I pulled a muscle in my leg. The class of '82 had one project that year. We decorated our hall for Spirit Week in the spring. I remembered a flowered balloon and something about “Flying High”, which drew a lot of snide remakes about our sobriety. September 1979 marked the end of austerity and the first real class project: our homecoming float. We borrowed a small truck from Agway and tried to catch blue wave fever”. Unfortu- nately. the judges thought our reclining football player looked ill. and while the experience was useful, we 'didn't win any prizes. Henry Talmage and Kerry Harrison as King and Queen did look good on the float, though. We had some minor changes in class officers that year. John Harris was president and Perrilynn Conklin was vice-president, a reversal from the previous year. Theresa Stapon became treasurer. Margaret Lundberg filled out the roster as secretary. We had two sales projects that year. We sold the infamous film packs early in the year and made a grand total of approximately $7.00 profit. To try to fatten the treasury, we sold beach towels in the spring, and we did make some money, finally. In the spring we decorated halls once again. This time ours was an underwater theme: “Swim in the Sophomore Sea ”. The entire math wing resembled a hydophobe's nightmare of dangling crepe paper seaweed, tissue paper jellyfish, hanging nets and shells, and a lobster pot that Lori Franz ended up leaving in Mr. DeGrasse’s office until he threatened to make it into a coffee table. We did win first place for our efforts, and if I do say so myself, we deserved it. This year marked my debut as a basketball manager. The G.O. tournament rolled around and over us and suddenly we were in last place. Darien Johnson. Darrell Harris, Derek Miles, Steven King. Jose Torres. John Harris. Steve Spanburgh. and the others tried hard but we were overmatched in both games. Our cheerleaders did look good and I seem to remember Marsha Reeve and Wendy Whitley were captains. John Harris left RHS in his junior year to attend a private school in New England. Into this power vacuum went Perrilynn again as president, Theresa Stapon as treasurer. Margaret Lundberg as vice-president, and Alethea Futch as secretary. Fall arrived and with it the class rings. They were mighty expensive because gold was about $600 an ounce, but they looked nice, and they represented 2 down and 2 to go. Our homecoming float was a winner in 1980: The Blue Waves are On top of the World”. We got first place: 1 believe we got it hands down, but we had to share it with the senior class. Mr. Van Conklin, an impartial observer, agrees with me on this point, by the way. Debbie Alaimo was junior queen and Henry Talmage was once again our class king. 1980-81 was the year of the great lucit ornament and candle sale caper. The class dutifully took orders and the delivery by the company got completely fouled up. Some orders got filled correctly. Some salesmen got partial orders. Some salesmen got some other salesmen’s orders. Some salesmen got no merchandise. I got a tremendous headache. We cleared about a grand on that one. And now the full truth can be told about the crazy pens and other promotion- al prizes. The company never sent us any. I held up their money until they reduced our bill, however. Heidi Van Scoy won a black and white TV in a raffle at the conclusion of that sale. We did better in G.O. Basketball as juniors. I know for a fact it was not my coaching. Willie Wilson and Brian Hobson helped me out and we actually won a game, defeating the freshmen. I. or should I say Willie, started Darien Johnson. Darrell Harris. Steven King. Derek Miles, and Jamie Sims, some guy named Hughes, Steve Spanburgh. Rich Reeve, and Melvin Trent were also in the game quite a bit. We did well against the Sophomores until the third period in the championship game. Oh well, there's always this year. Anyway. I have it on reliable informa- tion that alol of the players on the sophomore squad were older and more experienced than our guys. 1 think one or two even fought in the Korean War. but I may be mistaken. The elections in the spring of 1981 brought about an upset of sorts. John Hubbard defeated Perrilynn and Caroline McCartin in a three-way race for president. Theresa was now the vice- president and Judy Lawrence and Althea Hutch were treasurer and secretary, respectively. Our float building went very well, witness the pictures in the center section, and we got what we deserved last year, complete control of first place. (Sorry, Coach Herzog, the devil made me say that.) As she did last year, Debbie rode on our float, this time as Homecoming Queen. Scott Hackal. Homecoming King, was on the field that day. Every Rainbow Ends in a first place, oops. Blue Wave was our theme. Homecoming was cold and windy in our senior year, as it was the previous year but at least it didn't rain as it did the morning of homecoming when the class of '82 were Sophomores. Jumping back to September, I was very wary of sales programs after last year’s debacle, but the magazine sale went very well, and lo and behold, we made upwards of $5,000 profit. Bill Polak. Theresa Stapon, and Diane Densieski were top sales people but Liz Underwood and Nancy Froelich also took a lot of orders. And now I've written myself up to the present. The deadline for this section is Monday, December 21. 1981.1 know this sort of thing because I'm also the yearbook advisor, remember? As of this point in time, approximately a week prior to that deadline, here’s how the rest of the year stacks up. The senior class will be going, actually, has gone, when you read this, to Montreal for the senior class trip. We have have not had a tremendous time, and I was was not sedated and under doctor's care for a week afterwards. (Check the appropri- ate response). Prospects for the G.O. tournament are hopeful since we beat this year’s junior class team who defeated us last year, many of whom are now working and raising families. I expect the same starters but I may be found guilty of recruiting violations by the time you read this. We will have a prom, I think, but I have no idea where or when since several of my trusted officers are taking care of this; right, Judy and Alethea? I also expect to have graduation ceremonies. That about wraps it up. I'd like to offer my special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Van Conklin for their constant help with floats. I never could have done it without them. Good luck on the out- side, even you Fleming. Your pal, Mr. Koroleski 130 Remember me? John Harris VARSITY FIELD HOCKEY Co-Captains: A. Futch and T. Stapon Coach: Mrs. Barosa-Dudek Mrs. Dudek, S. Stapon 132 The 1981-1982 Varsity Girls' Field Hockey Team, coached by Barbara Barosa-Dudek. came through with a winning season for River head High School. A league record was composed of 3 wins, 3 losses, and 2 ties, and an overall record of 5-5-2. This year's captains were seniors Alethea Futch and Theresa Stapon. Other senior mem- bers of the team were Sharon Stark, Treasa Phil- lips, Doris Flood, and Regina Lowell. Aiding the cause of the team were such factors as speed, controlled stickwork and skilled playing ability. Under the guidance of a new coach, the team worked well together for that long-sought for hope- a play-off berth. Although the potential of the team was great, a chance for the play-offs diminished at the last scheduled game of the sea- son against the rival team, Bayport. Neverthe- less, the team had one of their best seasons ever, and is looking forward to an even better one next year. All League: D. Flood All-League: All County: T. They showed great sportmanship. fellowhip and brotherhood throughout every game. The team had a wonderful ability to work together and keep up a fantastic camaraderie with each other. This year's captains were Theresa Stapon and Doris Flood. Theresa and Dorie were also the only seniors on the team. The girls were fast, they handled the ball well, and showed great deals of skillful playing ability. Mary Riddick, although the shortest member of the team, shows tremendous potential. Kim Saunders, Rena Jefferson. Ebba Hobson, and Clara Martin make up the rest of the Team, and no one can find fault with their efforts either. (Except their coach, of course) CONGRATULATIONS ON A JOB WELL DONE! Usually in this spot on the second page of a Varsity Sport, the yearbook Staff places a picture of the teams seniors. Smith, L. Franz, and S. Ka- cherski once again. Some of the best times set this year were: A. Smith in the three mile at a time of 21:26.9; and D. Miloski in the 5000 meters at a time of 22:13.2. This year we also had t wo girls make all- leagues. they were D. Miloski. and K. McCartin. The Coach has very spirited outlooks toward an even better team next year-and this one is going to be hard to beat. 137 K. McCarthy, A. Smith, K. McCartin, K. Kruk, K. McCartin, Coach Husing, Front: D. Miloski, A. Moses, C. Lowell, L. Franz FALL CHEERLEADERS The 1981-1982 Cheerleading Teams consisted of many talented girls. Cheerleading is a sport, al- though it is not often recognized as one. A cheer- leader not only has to have the ability to project her voice, but must be agile, have good coordina- tion, and be able to perform some difficult gym- nastic moves. Fall Cheerleaders and Winter Cheerleaders are only different in one respect-the teams in which they are cheering for. The fall is for football and the winter for basketball, but ei- ther way the cheerleaders are always there show- ing spirit and pride in the Blue Waves. Capt. M. Egan, Coach Jackoloski, Capt. T. The Coach of the 1981-1982JV Girls’ Basketball Team is Mr. Triandiflou. a teacher at Pulaski Street School. The 1981-1982 JV Girls’ Basketball Team, coached by Mr. T, did a fine job this season. Like their leaders, the Varsity Team, they showed great team spirit, and willingness to work together. All of the team members worked hard, and showed great potential. They lead us to believe that we ought to be looking forward to some wonderful, winning varsity teams in the near future. 1 1 The 1981-1982 JV Girls’ Basketball Team! SPRING PREVIEW This year due to early deadlines, there was not time to take pictures of the Spring Sports, so we have prepared a Spring Preview in their places. Each spring the girls of RHS are given the opportu- nity to tryout for, and join teams to show their sportsmanship, spirit and ability. The first of these teams is Softball. The Softball team practices after school, and competes in league games. If they are in the top of the league, they will go to playoffs. The Track and Field team, not only includes run- ning, but; shotput, high jump, long jump, and dis- cus. Girls are given a change to train in these events, and then participate in meets. The Year- book Staff would like to wish these teams the best of luck. 144 INTRAMURAL VOLLEYBALL Each year the Physical Education Department holds intramural sports after school. This year one such team was the Girls’ Intramural Volleyball. These students do not have to try out for the team. Anyone that is interested may join. The girls divide into groups and play against each other. Although the competition is only between members of the same school, intramurals are a way in which to increase ones’ ability in a sport, and at the same time have some fun. The 1981-1982 Intramural Volleyball Girls and their Coach. 145 BOWLING INTRAMURALS Another such intramural sport is the Intramural Bowling. This however, is coached by a business teacher Mr. Stazzone. This once again takes place after school and anyone who is interested may join. The group is divided up into twelve teams this year, who competed against each other. Coach Stazzone S. Kacherski, D. Teresko. Y. Sequino, S. Bogdan, D. Miloski, T. Oliveri, N Dreeban, L. Torel M. The Co-Captains of this years' team were Brain Hobson and Scott Hackal. They kept the team in good spirits and at the same time kept them work- ing hard. Scott Hackal was also All-County and All- League this year. The team showed great improve- ment from past years and give RHS a hope for a terrific future in football. They will miss this years' seniors though, who were an asset to the team. They are pictured below. All-County-All- League; Scott Hackal Seniors: R. Smith, S. Kirschner. R. Reeve, H. Talmage, T. Pushed hard by their coach, the boys tried their best always. Captaining the team this year were senior Mike Drozd, and freshman, Dave Baker. Being a freshman on the Varsity team is a strange occurence, let alone being captain. But Daves’ talents war- ranted such a position. The team is hoping for a better season next year. Under the skillfull coaching of Mr. Rana. the team did have a wonder- ful season. Of course, like any other team, a great deal of their success was dependent upon them being able to work together. Co-Captains Henry Talmage and Charlie Trent were a great asset to the team. Henry and Leonard Halsey were also added to the All-League roster this year. The team will miss seniors Dwayne Trent, Leonard Halsey, Henry Talmage, Charlie Trent, Mike Ross, Brian Hobson, and Troy Mayo. Seniors: D. Trent, L. Halsey, H. Talmage, Front: C. Trent. M. Ross, T. We had wrestlers in many weight classes. This years captains were E. Carey, and C. Clinton. Both are excellent wrestlers and demonstrate what wrestling is all about. The team looks forward to an even better year next although it is losing four good wrestlers from its ranks. The team will feel the loss of Tom Roach, Ed Carey, Kent Brace, and John Bogdan. 159 Seniors: T. Roach, E. Carey, K. Brace, J. Bogdan JV Football The JV Football Team, coached by Walter Stew- art had a fine time this year. They showed much spirit, and sportsmanship, and played extremely well. The team had some very talented players on their roster this year. The captains of the team were D. Parker, K. Block, and D. Jones. They kept the boys together at all times. Due to the efforts seen by spectators this year, there is much opti- mism for great Varsity Football Teams in the fu- ture. Co-Captains: D. Parker, K. Block, D. Each spring the boys of RHS are given the oppor- tunity to tryout for, and join teams to show their sportsmanship, spirit and ability. The first of these spring teams is Baseball. The coach for this is again Mr. Rana. Track and Field is also open for the boys as well as the girls. And in the spring, the boys get their chance to show off at Tennis. The Yearbook Staff would like to wish all these teams the best of luck. TEAMS INCLUDE: BASEBALL, TRACK AND FIELD, AND TENNIS JV Spring Preview As with the Varsity Sports, the JV Sports do not meet deadlines either. Like the Varsity Sports Spring Teams, we have a Jv Baseball Team, a JV Track and Field, but unfortuanately there is no JV Tennis. These teams practice as hard if not harder, than the varsity teams. The Jv teams do not get as much attention or credit as the others however. But if it is remembered, that without JV teams, we would have no Varsity teams, for they are the Var- sity of the future. The Yearbook Staff wishes you all the best of luck! TEAMS INCLUDE: BASEBALL AND TRACK AND FIELD INTRAMURAL FLOOR HOCKEY Below is the 1982 Intramural Floor Hockey Crew. They are coached by Mr. Haas, who is a physical education teacher in the elementary school. As with other intramural sports, floor hock- ey takes place after school. Teams are chosen by captains, who are selected by the coach. Each team in turn plays against all the others until an overall winner is decided. The winning team is at the right. Anyone may join an intramural sport, and partici- pate in such games. 166 The Winning Team: P. McGuire. E. Lojko, M. Tuthill. K. DeFriest, T. Martin, Front: J. Misiano, D. Baker K. McCartin, S. Occupational Education Boces I Many students in Riverhead High School elect to spend half a day of school learning a vocation at the H.B. Ward Area Occupational Education Center or at the automotive shop in the high school operated by BOCES. This process usually requires a two year commitment, however some students do attend for only one year. Juniors spend the afternoon from noon to 3 pm at BOCES while Seniors attend in the morning from 8 am to 11 am. The next six pages present these students in alphabetcial order by occupa- tional title. The am is used to indicate those stu- dents enrolled in the morning program, general- ly seniors. The pm indicates afternoon students, generally juniors. AVTOMECHAMCS: PM:B. Grasse, K. David- son, M.
