Participants tutor students in reading and mathematics from second through eighth grades at the Junior High School and the Pulaski and Roanoke Avenue Elementary Schools. Tutors can earn one social studies credit while helping a younger student to succeed. Library Aides Debbie Phil The Library aides play an important role in the school com- munity. There are no special qualifications needed to join the Club other than the student's interest. Each member attends one meeting a month and actively contributes to the library program, working the equivalent of two periods a week. Library Club members in good standing are awarded a quarter of a credit at the end of the school year. Their duties are to charge and card books, help to maintain a orderly library collection, repair materials, write over- due slips, create book displays, and prepare new books and other materials for use. Each year in June members of the club travel to the annual convention of the New York State Junior Classical League, held at Binghamton University in New York. Riverhead's Latin Club has dis- tinguished itself in local, state, and national competition in such fields of classical schol- arship as mythology, Roman history, Roman life and culture, Latin grammar, Latin vocabu- lary, reading comprehension, derivation and word study, and Latin abbreviations and quota- tions; artistic and athletic com- petition. The trips included both overnight and one day trips. The skiers have travelled to Gore and Whiteface mountain in Lake Placid New York and Hunter mountain. For the first time in the club's history some of the trips were organized entirely by the club without the aid of a tour guide, which is the usual policy. Most of the trips are taken in De- cember and January during holidays. Many other trips were scheduled throughout the season. The football game being the only one throughout the year of 78-79 aroused the spirit of RHS students. It brought back many memories of the athletics which austerity has abolished at Riverhead. Brian Stark and Russell Kratoville and many others worked very hard in organiz- ing the seniors and teachers for the game. The 9th Grade Mixed Chorus is designed for 9th graders but many up- perclassmen find their way into the ranks. The Varsity Chorus is a complete Music Dept, class as students in both Band and Orchestra may join. The Ladies' Ensemble, Men's Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, and “The Group , which meet at odd lunch periods, have a distinctive reper- toire, to identify, study, and articulate. Out- side the curriculum of these choirs, students may audition and if accepted, attend Jr. and Sr. High County and State Festivals, also the North Fork Festival. Two students auditioned and were accepted into this past year's N.Y.S.S.M.A. All State Chorus. We are all proud of the hard work and degree of musi- cianship which Laura Urevich and Jeffrey Hazzard have displayed. This is to say, the cadets, their Naval Science classes and their activities have become an integral part of the school day routine. This year the cadets re-named their building and headquarters the “USS Riverhead and the two classrooms are not the Foc'sle and the Wardroom . The NJROTC Booster Club was formed this year. Parents, merchants, service clubs, and friends have helped the cadets accomplish important goals and milestones. The Corps of Cadets grew in quantity and quality this year. With the help of the Booster Club, a cadet choir was organized and performed at several local functions. An annual orientation cruise is planned again this year which will take the cadets to Annapolis, Maryland, and Washington, D.C. during the month of April. In May Riverhead cadets will host 300 Air Force and Navy JROTC cadets for a field day meet with academic, athletic and military drill phases of competition. NOW HEAR THIS! There are many who have helped make ours an out- standing unit. The Corps of Cadets wishes to thank the administration faculty, and student body for their continuing support. The negotiations seemed to be making little progress, and as October 5 drew nearer, a strike seemed imminent. An all night session on October 4 between the school board and the teachers produced an agreement, and as we all know, a strike was averted. In order to publicize their demands, the faculty picketed three times: at Riley Avenue, Aquebogue, and the District Office. The sight of teachers carrying picket signs was something that amused some students and upset others. However, most students agreed that it was something that they would not soon forget.
