Text from Pages 1 - 192 of the 1972 volume:

AVv CM r- Oj CJ O o w Pl, w p p CQ Riverhead High School We who have spent some years learning and teaching at Riverhead High School will feel a little sadness next year when the present building will probably be referred to as The Old High School.” This building has a certain character, a certain personality, a feeling of solidity and fine craftsmanship. From the massive columns at the entrance to the illuminated world globe suspended above the stairwell, the school speaks of an earlier time, a time when the world (and education) were less complex, less demanding. That world is gone. It is time now to move to a bigger, more complex building, a building which mirrors the changes in the world. Let us not, however, forget that old building and all that it represents. 3 5 6 iiiJ ilii 11 The senior class dedicates this 1972 edition of the Blue Peconic to a most congenial teacher and to a very personable administrator, both of whom have gained the admiration and respect of the entire student body. The teacher, Mr. Ben Butler, has only been with us for two years, hut during that time he has made his health class a fascinating, enjoyable experience. He has coached J.V. soccer and has donated many hours to the talent show and Black Orpheus II. A 1965 graduate of Southold High School, Mr. Butler.attended Long Island University, from which he graduated in 1970. At L.I.U. he was active in sports and student government and also worked w ith retarded children. Mr. Butler is married and is the father of a son. Drew . After graduation from Randolf High School in western New York State, Mr. Robert Wade spent three years in the U.S. Air Force after which he attended St. Bonaventure University, where he majored in physical education. After graduation he went on to receive his master's degrees in School Administration and Psychological Counseling. He taught two years in Randolf. two years in Cassadaga Valley, and eight years in Port Jefferson, where he was also an administrative assistant. Mr. Wade, w ho is the father of three sons, came to Riverhead in 1967 and has since become a friend and advisor to main R.H.S. students. To these men we dedicate our yearbook. 16 17 o E-i od E- co Q Board of Education First Row. LR — Mrs. Margaret Tooker, Mr. Frederick J. Alexander HI. Mrs. Dorothy Esseks. This year's arsit Football tram successfully began the season with a 38-6 win over Wm. Floyd. The team then went on to beat West Hampton. Longwood. and Comse wogue. They suffered unfortunate losses to Southam| ton and Port Jeff, rallied to trounce Easthampton. and ended the season with a loss to Greenport making the season rec- ord 5-3. The squad consisted of mans talented and devoted players, two of which made the All-League team: Danny Bartlett anti Allen Goleski. Bartlett was also voted the Most Valuable Player b his teammates. Tom Kowalsick was our key defensive man and managed to set a new school record for the number of tackles in one season. Remaining seniors alt Mason. Mike Bennett. Robert Fletcher. Charles Crump, and Mike Hubbard also made valuable contribu- tions throughout the season. And, since the team consisted primarily of underclassmen, there are high hopes for an- other successful season in '72. 118 CO-CAPTAINS: D. Bartlett. T. Kowalnick. 120 Rou I — J. Pulaski. B. Sm CJ o o o CO C 3 Oj Soccer is a relatively new sport to Riverhead, the team being only a few years in existence. But in those few years, through the efforts of coaches such as Mr. Husing and Mr. Butler, the sport is now beginning to receive the recognition it deserves. This year the Varsity Soccer squad ended the season with an overall record of 2-13. But, though they had a poor record, there were still several players who man- aged to have a fine season performance-wise. Four players were honored by being selected for All- County positions. Kevin Cline and Bob Groneman made the first All-County team while Bob Bokee and Rob Shutt were picked for the second All-County team. With the return of the invaluable Varsity underclass- men and those on the Jr. Varsity team, next year the team should show signs of improvement. 123 124 The win-loss record is not indicative of the great effort displayed by this year’s J. V. Soccer team. A team consisting of experienced Sopho- mores and anxious Freshmen worked hard to es- tablish themselves as a contender in the future. We suffered many close losses hut our 2 wins over non-league teams were impressive. Al- though the Sophomores will be moving up to the Varsity next year, a nucleus of Freshmen will be returning. High scorer this year was Larry Wil- liams, followed by Richard Stokely, Dixon Palm- er, Darryl Martin, and Charlie Bouchard respec- tively. Charlie, who kept us in many contests with his fine goalkeeping, was also voted by the players as the most valuable player, an honor rightly bestowed upon him. We would like to thank those who came out and supported us. Our hopes are high for a successful season next year, and we’ll be anxious to reverse the end result of many contests this year. W. Spellman. It was a fairly successful year for the 1971 cross-country squad. Varsity runners Greg Jones. Steve O'Shaughnessy, AJ Grey, and William Spellman helped the team win three out of six dual meets, and to place third twice in five cham- pionship meets. Greg Jones, who was co-captain with Steve 0 Shaughnessy, made a stunning individual performance when he defeated fifty-four other runners to win first place in the Easthampton Invitational. Most of the Varsity members will he leaving this year, hut there are many other runners who are capable and willing to fill their places. CO-CAPTAINS: S. O'Shaughnessy, G. Jones. G. Trutncr, L. Under the capable leadership of Mr. Danicllo, the boys managed to win three matches this season and ended with a 3-9 overall record. Though not a w inning season, it was nevertheless a good season. It has given the team, consisting totally of under- classmen. confidence and experience for future successful matches. The team was excellently coached by Coaeli Van Slyke, with the assistance of Mr. Rose. The coaches plays only work if the players execute them well, and execute they did. However, the team's spirit and drive allowed them to win most of their remaining games, including the unforget- tablx dose game against Southampton, a team we have been unable to defeat in many years.
