Riverhead High School Riverhead, New York Foreword What the world needs now is love, sweet love. That's the only thing that there's just too little of.” As children, we grow up searching for love and cherishing the love we find. Then we learn hate and fear. We are subject to the society we have come into but we have the power to change it. Through love we can alter the world for the better. Our generation is searching for love, brotherhood, beauty, and above all peace. We, the students of Riverhead High School, who are a part of this new generation have searched and cherished the love we have found between the teachers and students. That is why, as the graduating class of 1969, we chose the theme Love for our yearbook. 6 This year the class of '69 chose a man with a background which varies from traveler and businessman to teacher. After graduating from East Hampton High School, he served as a member of the United States Army from 1946-48. From there he enrolled at Pace College from which he received his B.A. degree in 1952. He then attended such schools as St. John's University, Hunter College, St. Paul’s College, Syracuse University and C.W. Post College. He entered the business world in 1955 where he worked for the Great Lakes Carbon Corporation in New York City. Here he remained until 1958. His interest then turned to teaching. He began by joining the staff of Anderson School in Straatsburg where he taught business for six months. In September 1959 he returned to Long Island to begin teaching at Shelter Island where he remained until June 1961. He first entered Riverhead High School in 1961 but only remained until June 1962. Ontario, Canada then attracted his attention and he left to teach there until 1963. In September of that year he returned to continue teaching at Riverhead High School. He has devoted a considerable amount of time and effort to teaching, advising and giving a helping hand to the Seniors as well as his students. Therefore, we would like to show our gratitude for his kindness and hard work by dedicating this, our yearbook, to Mr. Russell V. Smith. 7 LEADERSHIP Board Of Education Margaret Tooker. He spent three and a half years overseas. While he was overseas he received a battlefield commission as first Lieutenant in the Adjutant Generals Department. In 1948 he received his M.S. in Business Education from the University of Pennsylvania, further graduate studies were taken at N.Y.U.. Hofstra and C. W. Post. In 1950 he came to Riverhead as a teacher of business education and moved on to guidance counselor in 1962 and as Director of guidance and assistant principal in 1965. He has traveled thru Africa. Italy. France. Germany. Austria and Switzerland. His career began after he received his B.S. degree in 1936 from Buffalo State Teachers College. He then spent 5 years teaching in Versailles. New York and 10 years in Baiting Hollow. He served 21 2 years overseas in Europe during World War II. Mr. Muldoon entered the staff of Riverhead High School in 1945 and has remained until this year of his retirement. He has also, during this time, traveled widely throughout the U.S. These teachers have devoted their lives to education and have accomplished a great deal in those years. We. as students, are sorry to see them leave their profession which they carried out with much ambition and fortitude. They will be forever remembered for their advice and guidance. “Old. — are we growing old? Life blooms as we travel on Up the hills, into fresh, lovely dawn: In spirit we are children still With a promise to fulfill. Because heaven is in us, to bud and un- fold. We are younger, for growing old!” Lucy Larcom MR. WILLIAM S. MASON MISS ALICE H. SPANN In 1931 Miss Spann received her B.A. degree from Hunter College and in 1935 her M.A. degree. He attended Hobart College where he received his B.A. degree in 1937. Before coming to Riverhead he taught in Rochester from 1939-40. While at Rochester he also worked for A.B. Dick Co. from 1941-42. Later that year he entered Riverhead High School and has been with us since except from 1945-46 when he taught in Washington. D.C. ZUREK •Mon” 69 LOVE IS REMEMBERING As a small token of our esteem, the class of 1969, wishes to set aside this page as a memoriam to our fellow classmates, whose lives, although brief, were filled with love for the world around them. Give Us Time A day is such a precious thing And every hour in it, For time has far too fleet a wing To waste a single minute. One’s life is such a tiny span And there's so much to do, If we would carry out His plan And to ourselves be true. To scatter sunshine here and there Along life’s rugged road; To lend a hand and always share A fellow traveler' load. And give to some disheartened soul A cheery word, a smile. To give him strength to reach his goal and make his life worthwhile. To comfort those who suffer grief, And dry another’s tears; To lift a child and give relief From all his childish fears. Whatever task should then befall, As on through life we go, Oh give us time to do them all, Before the sands run low. Reginald Holmes Silvia Perez and her hostess Karen Wells Silvia Perez, age 16, was our Open Door Exchange Student from Guatemala City, Guatemala. Silvia spent about ten weeks from October 25 to January 3 as an eleventh grade student at Riverhead. She now attends the American School of Guatemala as an eleventh grade student. Her future plans are to study architecture at a university. Silvia is interested in doing things with her hands such as art, decorating, and sewing. Silvia commented upon how different Riverhead was compared to her school with respect to the athletic program and some of her courses. We hope that Silvia was able to gather into her short stay pleasant memories of Riverhead to last her for many years. 71 73 74 You better believe it we re winning. No comment . . Not here Joe.” If you don’t want to wait for me I don't care. Lovers” 75 Quiet. Martha is concentrating.” Oh-high Burns.” Mr. MacDonald John do some last minute practicing. No. Ricky, there’s no help in sight.” On March 7 and 8. Riverhead High School presented Guys and Dolls , a romantic musical comedy staged on Broadway. The principle characters in the play were Nathan Detroit portrayed by Fred Reeve, his girl Miss Adelaide by Gwen Shaffran. Sky Masterson played by John MacDonald and Miss Sarah by Louann Young. The play was a huge success thanks to the students and teachers who helped on the production staff. Mr. Abrams our producer. Miss Nesnick the director and Mr. MacDonald in charge of music. 77 How many times do I have to tell you! Do you really know Karate?” 78 Hey man what's Happening? Class Officers' — Douglas Warner.
