Extended hands are so meaningful during the memorable high school years, in symbolizing friendship, greeting, guidance, and aid. To a bewildered student on the threshold of life, these steadying factors are irreplaceable. When offered en- couragements through the reliable grip of a hand, a firm grasp on adult life is within our realm. In gratitude of the capable and willing hands so tirelessly sent lorth in our behalf, we. the Riverhead High School Graduating Class of 1968 have chosen • Hands as the theme of this book. We believe that the strength gathered from such bestowed incentives, together with our own initiatives, have developed us into more responsible, more mature, more well-rounded individuals. In your hands, my fellow citizens, more than mine, will rest the final success or failure of our course. John F. Kennedy

Many times during a student’s life, he craves for a teacher’s recognition, yet he rare- ly receives it. However, our school has within its faculty a member who never fails to appreciate a student’s potential as an individual, not as one of the masses. This teach- er’s profession is greatly dependent upon hands in intricate work as well as in student activities. He is involved, and—in short, he cares. A pat on the back is always ready for work which is well-done, but no praise is delivered if nothing is accomplished to de- serve it. Students thrive on such treatment as adults, and here we have a teacher who gracefully teaches his subject matter and simultaneously learns about his students and their interests. This is a fine and rare quality. After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree from Oneonta in 1957, he taught for a year in Mattituck and, in September 1958, he was added to the faculty of Riverhead High School. Having achieved his Master of Science degree in 1965 from his alma mater, he is licensed to teach all subjects, but has a preference for chemistry. As students, we have very few honors to bestow. Consequently, this dedication is the greatest tribute a teacher can attain from the student body. In utmost apprecia- tion of such distinguishable qualities, the Class of 1968 dedicates this book to Mr. Charles Van Slyke. 7
