New York 3 FOREWORD Extended hands are so meaningful during the memorable high school years, in symbolizing friendship, greeting, guidance, and aid. To a bewildered student on the threshold of life, these steadying factors are irreplaceable. When offered en- couragements through the reliable grip of a hand, a firm grasp on adult life is within our realm. In gratitude of the capable and willing hands so tirelessly sent lorth in our behalf, we. the Riverhead High School Graduating Class of 1968 have chosen • Hands as the theme of this book. We believe that the strength gathered from such bestowed incentives, together with our own initiatives, have developed us into more responsible, more mature, more well-rounded individuals. In your hands, my fellow citizens, more than mine, will rest the final success or failure of our course. John F. Kennedy Dedication 6 Many times during a student’s life, he craves for a teacher’s recognition, yet he rare- ly receives it. However, our school has within its faculty a member who never fails to appreciate a student’s potential as an individual, not as one of the masses. This teach- er’s profession is greatly dependent upon hands in intricate work as well as in student activities. He is involved, and—in short, he cares. A pat on the back is always ready for work which is well-done, but no praise is delivered if nothing is accomplished to de- serve it. Students thrive on such treatment as adults, and here we have a teacher who gracefully teaches his subject matter and simultaneously learns about his students and their interests. This is a fine and rare quality. After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree from Oneonta in 1957, he taught for a year in Mattituck and, in September 1958, he was added to the faculty of Riverhead High School. Having achieved his Master of Science degree in 1965 from his alma mater, he is licensed to teach all subjects, but has a preference for chemistry. As students, we have very few honors to bestow. Consequently, this dedication is the greatest tribute a teacher can attain from the student body. In utmost apprecia- tion of such distinguishable qualities, the Class of 1968 dedicates this book to Mr. Charles Van Slyke. 7 8 Haply from them the toiler, bent Above his forge or plow, may gain A manlier spirit of content. Raacke Guidance i Anthony J. Braun 1968 marks the retirement of a well-known Riverhead faculty member. Mr. Braun has taught for a number of years, and has received recognition for his remarkable achievements in the field of education. Mr. Anthony Braun, born in Rochester, Pennsylvania, graduated from Hutchin- son Central High School in Buffalo. Continuing his education, he received his B.S. degree from Buffalo State Teachers College in 1937 and his M.A. from Columbia in 1942. Mr. Braun became a member of Riverhead’s faculty in 1937. Well qualified as a shop teacher due to fifteen years of industrial business ex- perience before launching his teaching career, he also gained experience as a soldier and officer in the New York National Guard. The student body will es- pecially miss Mr. Braun’s influence on industrial arts careers. As graduating seniors, the Class of 1968 wishes to thank this retiring teacher for his contribution educationally, and for giving us favorable memories of our High School years. Mr. Braun symbolizes R.H.S. as we know it, and therefore, with his retirement, we will be one of the last classes to remember and praise the dedication of Mr. Braun. 13 Engl Abrams-Department Head English enriches one’s ability to express oneself. Laws, little known rules, and maintenance of the auto are taught in class meetings and help to develop more well informed drivers. Home Ec Courses in home economics are open to both male and female students. Cooking, sewing, budgeting, and child care are some of the courses. Here, RHS hopes to help its students adapt more readily to the domestic duties which are necessary in life. 21 Miss Diane Robinson Miss Josephine Bruno A r t A wide variety of art courses are of- fered to RHS students. Through capable guiding by competent instructors, stu- dents are encouraged to express individ- uality in their numerous projects. Industrial Art John Kcyscr Edmund Robertson The industrial art department opens wood and met- al shop to boys who are interested in learning the ma- nipulation of tools. Individual abilities and the devel- opment of skill join to give the student practical knowledge. 22 L a t 1 n Morris Diamond Roman civilization, prose and politics are introduced through translations dealt with in Latin classes: not only an aid in ancient history. Latin also helps students with their English, in deriving common English words. Riverhead’s French Department offers many aids in help- ing students learn to speak French fluently. Movies, lab equipment, tapes, records, books, and excursions to see plays all contribute to the interest of the language offered. French civilization, history, culture, and geography are also taught. r e n c Mrs. Roberta Brewster Mrs. Patricia DuBose 23 German Miss Alice Spann Our German curriculum has as its linguistic objective the mastery of fundamentals in comprehending, speaking, reading, and writing German. Its cultural objective is a better understanding of the German-speaking peoples of Austria. Germany, and Switzerland through contact with their geography, history, literature, art, and music. And the voice of that fitful song Sings on, and is never still: ‘‘A boy’s will is the wind’s will. And the thoughts of youth are long, long thoughts.” There are things of which I may not speak; There are dreams that cannot die; There are thoughts that make the strong heart weak. And bring a pallor into the cheek. And a mist before the eye. And the words of that fatal song Come over me like a chill; “A boy’s will is the wind’s will, And the thoughts of youth are long, long thoughts.” Henry Wadsworth Longfellow SETHOftS KENNETH F. Leah is also a native Australian, originating from Victoria, a moderately small town near the coast of Australia. She attended Benalla High School for her Freshman year, while her Sophomore year is being spent with us at Riverhead High School, sponsored by the Riverhead Rotary Club. Leah has a program similar to other Riverhead High School students, but school is not her only inter- est as she avidly enjoys horseback riding and reading. We hope Leah will enjoy herself here at Riverhead as she did in Australia. Just as Neil participated in our school activities and government, we hope Leah will feel free to do so, and that the hand of friendship will once again span inter- national waters. For last year and part of this year we had the plea- sure of being host to Neil Smith, an Australian ex- change student. Neil hails from Adelaide, the capital, and largest city in Australia. He attended Campbelltown H.S. for five years and graduated in 1966. For one year after his graduation, the Riverhead Rotary Club sponsored Neil’s stay in Riverhead where he attended Riverhead H.S. In addition to attending classes with our students, Neil actively lent his support to the football team and even had enough school spirit to sell his magazine quota. We were, of course, saddened to see Neil leave, but all good things must come to an end. Neil has given us a living example of brotherhood and the universality of people, and for this we are gravely indebted. 69 Watch the birdie! The play was a tre- mendous ' success, thanks to the large production staff, and the di- rection of Mr. Abrams, Mr. Mac- Donald. and Miss Nesnick. Oh, what a beautiful girl! General Organization This year a new innovation was instituted in student government for the G.O.. the General Council was founded. Consisting of twelve elected members, it has brought about such actions as the foundation of the school store with the sale of school pins, banners, and the use of the new score board for the football field. Surely an orga- nization with such imagination will contin- ue to prosper. 99 Our G.O. at work. German Club First row: J. Warner. C. Andrews. D. Hedges, R Peters. S. Terry. J. Pflum. M. McIntosh. C. Through rain and biting wind, the girls practiced diligently. The results were two fine honor teams. 138 FIRST HONOR TEAM: R Lipetz, J. Folk. H. Schippers, N. Sawyer, E. Stakey, N. McKillop. M. Dunston. D. Murray. Volleyball is the “restful” sport which comes between the gruel- ing sports of field hockey and basketball. It is a game where team work is ultimately essential for the success of a game. SECOND HONOR TEAM: D. Lewin, R. Gradney, L. McCoy, R. Brewster. S. L’Hommedieu, L. Kobylenski. L. Fischer. S. Mack. With teams consisting of six players, three forwards and three guards, this sport re- quires much endurance and skill, at which the girls work very hard to achieve. 140 Archery Tennis Softball 142 143 Look, a falling star! In addition, some of the girls served as waitresses for a supper given for the football team. The squad also attended a cheering clinic which was very instructive and enjoyable. The cheerleaders' help in promoting school spirit has been much appreciated. 146 Cheerleaders 147 Captain: Sue Terry This year’s J.V. teams both had good seasons and were, as usual, inspired by the J.V. Cheerleaders. Under the leadership of Katherine Harding and Janice Pfium, the girls stood by the team when in defeat and cheered them on to victory, thus adding much to the school spirit. 148 1st row: D. Young. S. In a few days we will receive our diplomas and that final farewell handshake. We have been taught and guided by many strong and capable hands, and with each encounter with these hands, our own hands have grown and matured. But we must not look back, we must turn toward tomorrow. The past is but the beginning of a beginning, and all that is and has been is but the twilight of the dawn. ... A day will come when beings who are now latent in our thoughts and hidden in our loins shall stand upon this earth as one stands upon a footstool, and shall laugh and reach out their hands amid the stars.” Herbert George Wells 150 151 v .
