This culture after much turmoil and great strife grew to be the Roman Empire. The Romans of yesteryear had many admirable qualities. These attributes included wisdom, honesty and courage. We students of today hope to carry these outstanding characteristics with us after our high school years. It is every student's obligation to maintain the high standards first set up by the Romans. We of the class of 1967 have achieved many goals because of the examples of the Romans. We can because we think we can is a phrase which aptly describes our years of work and participation in this school. Hard work and diligent effort went into making our high school years meaningful ones. Inspired by the ideals and principles practiced by the Romans, we only hope to follow in their footsteps in the coming years. ■ • .. . - • U 5 Fame and recognition have many fol- lowers; service and unselfish devotion but few. And even fewer are those who can honestly claim to be true scholars. For twenty- three years Mr. Morris Diamond has been a beloved member of the faculty of Riverhead High School and has carved a niche for him- self in the annals of our school. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1933 from the College of the City of New York and later earned his Master of Science degree from the same college. Although he is qualified to teach other subjects, Latin is his favorite. He is also a classical studies assistant to the New York State Regent's commission. His animated manner and never-failing in- terest in persons and ideas plus his extra- ordinary fund of knowledge are some of the qualities that distinguish him from other people. He is truly a man dedicated to his profession and his students. Therefore, we the Class of 1967 proudly dedicate our year- book to Mr. Morris Diamond. b FACULTY Nam non solum scire aliquid, artis est, sed quaedam ars etiam docendi circero. Lucretius, DeRerum Natura Bk.ii 1.7. 130 Recent technological tri- umphs by America's sci- entists have shown the superiority of our country in the various fields of science. If we are to maintain our lead in these scientific fields, more young people must prepare for these careers. The science dept, at R.H.S. tries to give the students a fundamental knowledge of the sci- ences. Mathematics Today, mathematics is a must if a person hopes to gain a clear understanding of the technical age in which he lives. The mathematics de- partment of R.H.S. attempts to give the math student this understanding by offering courses from elementary al- gebra to analytic Geometry and Calculus. Latin Latin plays an important part in our curriculum. The Latin students learn much about Roman traditions and cus- toms by the extensive study of Latin translations (Caesar Cicero). French The French language gives the student a richer and greater appreciation of France. In the French class- room, the language student learns and practices the skills which enable him to develop an understanding of the subject. German German is in its fourth year at R.H.S. under the direction and skill of Miss Spann. Ger- man I and German II stu- dents are being taught the fundamentals of this lang- uage. 135 Art Because our art students are given an opportunity to ex- perience and develop an ap- preciation of art, the River- head High School Art Depart- ment consists of all types of art instructions. Whether a student prefers a general knowledge of drawing or a specific knowledge of one field of art, the opportunity is opened to them with the help and guidance of Miss Bruno. 136 English English is the basic curriculum shared by all students during their four high school years. In the sense of true brother- hood, it incorporates the literary talents of many na- tionalities—all combined to help promote better under- standing and interest for the student. ] 98 90 | Business The business course in R.H.S. ranges from typing, to short- hand, bookkeeping, and busi- ness law. They prepare the secretary for a career in the business world. Success, how- ever, doesn't happen over- night. To obtain a perfect career, many hours of study must be put forth. A good appearance, friendly attitude and a willingness to work, are the main characteristics of a successful business stu- dent. 138 Social Studies To make the world we live in more prosperous and peace- ful, students of World His- tory, American History, and psychology learn the mis- takes and victories of our forefathers, and analyze the problems of today. Through their studies of history and psychology, these students are able to resolve their own problems and become better citizens. 139 Though they may attend col- lege or pursue business careers, the majority of girls in high school are destined to become homemakers. Riverhead High's economics program prepares these girls for their future tasks—sew- ing, cooking, and child care. Riverhead High School also offers the boys an economics program. Here the future fathers, husbands, bachelors learn the fundamentals of cooking and sewing. Industrial Arts In Riverhead High, boys can become better acquainted with the fundamentals of both wood and metal work.
