EX-LIBRIS Peconic Published by The Class of 1960 Riverhead High School Riverhead, New York Foreword An unusual light hangs in our front stairwell—a globe of the world en- circled with the signs of the Zodiac. It has been there since 1935, when the school was built. At that time, only twenty-five years ago, people con- sidered the heavens a vast mystery. Some believed that the movements of stars actually guided their lives. Today new scientific discoveries have changed our attitude toward the uni- verse. In 1960 man hopes to explore the stars himself with rockets. Whatever the stars may hold, we can be grateful for the education available to us and the guidance of our teachers through these changing times. Table of Contents Faculty 9 Seniors 17 Classes 37 Sports 49 Activities 71 Curriculum 91 Dedication Mr. El wood Beaver, you were born in Cata- wissa, Pennsylvania. You graduated from Bloomsburg State Teacher’s College and Co- lumbia University, where you received a Master of Arts degree. You have taught commercial subjects here and made Riverhead your home since 1948. In grateful appreciation of the time and energy you have devoted to the yearbook staff, both as adviser and photographer, we dedicate the 1960 Blue Peconic to you. The faculty in an educational system plays the most vital role in the molding of the stu- dent’s character. Without the proper guidance in its early years, a young mind will find it dif- ficult to continue on the road toward a goal. Few schools can boast a faculty as interested, sincere, and diligent as can Riverhead. Hoard of Education Seated: Millie Northridge, H. Dickson Turnbull, Chairman, John Freese. Football True to form, Coach “Mike” McKillop molded a fine football team during the 1959 season. Under the able captaincy of Howard Gassert and William Droskowski, our team played excellent football which consequently lead to a 4, 2, and 2 season. Albert Daniels, one of the best guards River- head has ever had, was unanimously elected to the Long Island Daily press, Newsday, and Herald Tribune’s All-Scholastic Teams, while Howard Gassert and Jerry Nelson received honorable mentions. The Junior Varsity team should also be highly commended. Under Coach Walter Stew- ard, they finished the season with a 4 and 1 record, led by their 13-9 upset of Amityville, which had a twenty game winning streak. II. Cross Country First Row: T. S., Coach Daniello lead another winning basketball team. Although we did lose six league games, we still managed to clinch fourth place with a 9-6 rec- ord. In doing so, we beat Central Islip, Smith- town, and Hauppague, three of the top teams in the County. This made the standings very close until the final few games. Nat Brown, the captain of this year’s team, did a highly commendable job of leading the Blue Wave team throughout the season. Because of the excellent J.V. squad com- prised of such boys as Neil Millman, John Nurenberg, and Ken Kirschner, Coach Daniello should have little trouble replacing the seniors who will leave in June. Wrestling The Riverhead High wrestling team, under the expert coaching of Walter Stewart, dis- played great form this year and thus ended one of the greatest wrestling seasons in the history of Riverhead with a 13-2 record. This year’s team was lead by Matteo Cucchiara, who scored a total of thirteen wins and one tie, and Skip Schumedja who also was undefeated. In the league tournaments Riverhead did quite well despite a few mishaps and the loss of Skip Schumedja. Pat Harris, Matteo Cucchiara, Bill Preeg, Mike Demchak, and Bill Droskoski, were the wrestlers who won honors in these tournaments. 56 ‘Janis throws the referee!' “Janis gets a pin!” First row: L. But with the return of many other varsity members and the more versatile younger boys, this year’s squad should prove to be one of great results. This year’s team has a great depth to it. Mat- teo Cucchiara, Mitchel Stocki, Jerry Brown, Harlow Warner, and Tom Carter, should prove to compose an excellent running team, while Buddy Griffiths, Neil Millman, Richard Win- free, and Rocky Nelson, should be invaluable in the field events. “Up and over’ 59 First row: T. Baseball “Batter up,” the well known cry of the umpire, once again ushered in another excellent season for Coach “Mike” McKillop and his 1959 Blue Wave baseball team. Led by such boys as, Carl Bilski, Kent Wells, Frank Zaweski, Steve Van Camerik, and Ray Chesire, the Waves captured first place in the A3 league with an 8 and 2 season. After defeating Patchogue in the play-off game, we unfortunately lost the championship game to Port Jefferson by a score of 6 to 2. Our 1960 Blue Wave team should again fare quite well, with many of last year’s first- string players. “Kent Wells scores another run for Riverhead.” ‘Keep your eye on it Nat.’ 61 t This bird needs a pole to take off Coach Daniello and Coach Gilhooley relax after a hard practice. 62 The Football Team gets set for another day’s practice.
