Foreword . •. Riverhead is geographically the central point in Suffolk County. This factor of location brought to Riverhead the annual Suffolk County Fair, which was held each fall. From 1843 to 1941, thousands of men, women and children came to the fair for excitement, entertainment and education. It was in 1941 that they came to their last fair. Harness races and auto races provided thrills and chills galore, while a baseball game between the Brooklyn Dodger Rookies and the Riverhead All-Stars offered entertainment. Educationally speaking, there was something to fit the needs of each individual. Outstanding, were demonstrations of the newest farm practices and machinery and exhibits of harvest fruits of the area. Here was staged the first competitive tournament of civil defense units in the United States. The old fair ground was purchased from the Suffolk County Agricultural Society by Riverhead School District No. 5 in 1936. The society reserved the privilege of continuing the annual fairs, unless there should be none held for two consecutive years. In that event, the school district would be given complete use of the grounds and buildings. In 1942 and 1943 it was found impractical to continue the fairs, and the grounds were turned over to the school district at that time. Now, in 1957, the same ground is the site of what may be called the hub of a new school district, formed July 1, 1956, and known as Central School District No. 2, of the towns of Riverhead, Southampton, and Brookhaven. With the guidance, instruction, and friendship of a capable faculty, our minds are imbued with learning and understanding: learning, which prepares us for immediate occupation or for further education: Understanding of our own personal problems, the problems of others and even the problems of the world, fitting us for citizenship in our community, state, and nation. With the foregoing facts in mind, we would like to show you what our high school is doing with this fine heritage.
