€ iUbris Foreword . •. Riverhead is geographically the central point in Suffolk County. This factor of location brought to Riverhead the annual Suffolk County Fair, which was held each fall. From 1843 to 1941, thousands of men, women and children came to the fair for excitement, entertainment and education. It was in 1941 that they came to their last fair. Harness races and auto races provided thrills and chills galore, while a baseball game between the Brooklyn Dodger Rookies and the Riverhead All-Stars offered entertainment. Educationally speaking, there was something to fit the needs of each individual. Outstanding, were demonstrations of the newest farm practices and machinery and exhibits of harvest fruits of the area. Here was staged the first competitive tournament of civil defense units in the United States. The old fair ground was purchased from the Suffolk County Agricultural Society by Riverhead School District No. 5 in 1936. The society reserved the privilege of continuing the annual fairs, unless there should be none held for two consecutive years. In that event, the school district would be given complete use of the grounds and buildings. In 1942 and 1943 it was found impractical to continue the fairs, and the grounds were turned over to the school district at that time. Now, in 1957, the same ground is the site of what may be called the hub of a new school district, formed July 1, 1956, and known as Central School District No. 2, of the towns of Riverhead, Southampton, and Brookhaven. With the guidance, instruction, and friendship of a capable faculty, our minds are imbued with learning and understanding: learning, which prepares us for immediate occupation or for further education: Understanding of our own personal problems, the problems of others and even the problems of the world, fitting us for citizenship in our community, state, and nation. With the foregoing facts in mind, we would like to show you what our high school is doing with this fine heritage. Table of Faculty Seniors Classes Sports Activities J Amy Luce Tooker, you were born in Riverhead, you were graduated from its schools, you completed your education at Cornell University and Smith School of Social Work: you have been intensely interested in public and mental health, you have been a member of the Riverhead Board of Education since 1933 and its President for the past two years. In grateful appreciation of your unstinting efforts in the field of education, the Senior Class of 1957 respectfully dedicates this volume to you. As did the other three classes, they participated in decorating for the Hah loween dance. This year all the juniors received a feeling of accom- plishment and satisfaction from their first class formal, the Junior Prom. Also, they supplied ushers for the January and June commence- ments. The finish line is only two more steps. They pause after a tiresome race. The Riverhead High School Cross Country teams, under the leadership of Coach James Gilhooly, had an outstanding year. A large turnout at the begin- ning of the year forced coach to divide the team into three squads. The Freshmen squad, led by G. Conklin, F. Maks, J. McCaffery and K. Wells, won four straight matches and came in second, to Port Jefferson in the County Meet while the J.V. team came in third with the aid of its top runners S. Veoukas, E. Turner and A. Lankau. Urged on by co-captains R. Doroska and R. Ligon, the Varsity won seven matches, losing only to Port Jefferson in the County meets. At the Long Island Champion- ships, Riverhead ran its best race of the season. Competing against more than a 100 individuals, the boys took four out of the first five places defeating 18 other schools from Suffolk and Nassau Counties. Representing Long Island in the State Champion- ship, Riverhead took fourth place in competition against the top high schools in New York. Many are chosen but few will finish. 59 First row: Forwards K. Heller, G. Murphy. Second row: Managers G. Penney, E. Benjamin. First row: Guards C. Bilski, C. Harris, L. Johnson, A. Rogozinski. The team is slowly de- veloping, and in another year or so should start to challenge the top teams. Top performers this year were: Larry Johnson, Carl Harris, Bruce Sanford, Ed Collins, and Mike Small. Only San- ford will be returning next year, but with some bright J.V. prospects, the team should be able to improve. Ed is fouled going up for a shot. Which one are they aiming at? The outlook at the begin- ning of the year not not too good with only two letter men returning to the mat. By the end of the season things had picked up, and Co-Captain Harry Poliak was placed in the Suffolk County Tourna- ment. To mark the 2,000th anniversary of the death of Julius Caesar, 100 students of RHS Latin Clubs, under the direction of Morris Diamond, staged a Roman banquet on March 15, 1957 at Regulars Corner. For their Ides of March banquet, students wore self' fashioned costumes and prepared a menu “from eggs to apples. They had special Roman bread baked for the occasion. The banquet hall had garland columns and was ar' ranged in the form of a long U, called a triclinium by the Romans. Scenes from Caesar's life, drawn by the students were on display. At the head of the triclinium was Caesar's throne, with a relief of Caesar at the back. The Town Board of Riverhead adopted a resolution to the effect that March 15, 1957 be a Day of Observance in the Town of Riverhead and that this day be designated “Julius Caesar Day. 81 Future Homemakers of America First row. left to right: J.
