Why? She doesn ' t have her Spanish finished. THE COOK FAMILY Hurry, Hurry the bus has stopped in front of the house! says the younger member of the Cook family. V ' P U uU At last, I ' m at school, I wonder what I have forgotten. I need my Spanish Book, my paper, and oh yes, my pencils. GOES TO SCHOOL A cool refreshing drink helps Roger remem- ber facts for the big test ahead. (Right) A brisk walk between buildings wakes a fel- low before class. (Below) THE BRAIN TEASERS Hasta manana, is a frequent expression of Michele Davis as she leaves her Spanish I class each day. In English class she trans- lates this for he r classmates, See you to- morrow. In Spanish class you learn how to speak better English and in English you learn how to speak Spanish well. Does this make sense? To the English-Spanish class it does. This is the reason you should have a good basis in English before you tackle a foreign lan- guage. At Riverdale tlie pupils receive this in their English classes, so that they are pre- pared for tlieir foreign language. ' What ' s that question again, Mr. Smith? asks Floyd. POLITICIANS ALL In studying the world, and its problems, each pupil at Riverdale is learning to become a first class citizen. To study about other countries and other times is important to each pupil in understanding how his own government works. It is the duty of each person to see that the government is well mn. Senior government is tlie final step toward adult citizenship. An interesting report, Jerry! PRACTICAL MINDS As the boys in our agriculture department are learning to become better farmers, they learn to improve the land by soil conserva- tion and good farm management. Good judgement is important. In the home economics, the girls learn how to run efficient homes through lessons on nutrition, clothing, and child care. They leam how to improve their personal ap- pearance by good grooming. Another of Dan Bennett ' s disturbing questions beings out that mischievous smile of Mr. Hartung ' s as the rest of the class snicker. THE EXPLOSIVES!! At last, it ' s finished, now for the grade, says Cynthia Friend. From the outer most space to the enter most earth the science pupils go to observe and study the mysteries they are to conquer. Chemistry pupils work long hours over their lab tables in class dtuing and after school. There is always excitement caused by small explosions, large pops or leaky troughs. The eightli grade pre- pare for high school science as they learn the scientific names of rocks, plants, and animals. Field trips to farms and wooded areas add to the interest of their classes. Projects such as bug, leaf and rock collections create more interest in the field of science. In these classes the pupils leam lab safety, chemical symbols pre- pare them for careers in science, medicine and life. Mr. Hartung ' s geometry class learned that accuracy in measurement and calculations was necessary in mathematics. ACCURACY COUNTS Accuracy in typing is initial. The pupils learn to work with speed and accuracy. Archery class is a favorite of boys and girls alike in developing strong arms and good eyes. STRONG MINDS AND BODYS After showing the pupils how to build strong, heatlhy bodies, Mr. Stephens teaches die health class the whys and hows of good health. The seventh graders study the fundamentals of music as well as sing in Mr. Lowery ' s music class. Quite! We ' re studying. Riverdale pupils prepare their lessons for the school day in the study hall. Here pupils diligently study under die watchful eye of Mr. Guinther, who keeps them studying diligently. 12 FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATION Mr. Joe Smith, Principal of Riverdale High Mr. Cl arence Bowers, DeKalb Co. Many hours were used in senior projects. The senior play, Jane Eyre and the Christmas semi-formal dance were the first semester proj- ects. Candy sales and dues helped boost our treasury to enable us to go on the long awaited senior trip, which was taken the first week of May, 1962. We went by train to New York and Washington, spending six sleepless, memory filled nights. We arrived home on Sunday filled with tales of our trip and ready for an all night whirl at the junior-senior banquet. Final exams, Baccalaureate and Commencement. SENIORS The highlight of our freshman year was our ini- tiation. A class of scarecrows, vampires and sleepy-time people arrived at school to be met by the seniors of ' 59. They decorated us witli burnt cork, lipstick and necklaces of onions, potatoes and carrots. Plans for the Christmas Semi-formal dance began. By our sophomore year we were experienced. Plans for the Thanksgiving hop, The Turkey Trot filled our time and minds. The turkey raffle was won by our surprised sponsor, Mr. Hartung. Planning sessions and practices for The Variety Show of 1960 proved time consuming during and after school. This was our first class production and we were busy with building scenery, sewing costumes and polishing routines. The show was given March 17 and 18 with large crowds both evenings to see the results of our long hours of hard work. We ordered our class rings and sweaters; the sweaters arrived in January. The class rings came in September of our Junior year making us full fledged Juniors. Magazine sales and selling concessions during the ball games and the noon hour filled our time. The presentation of our class play Great Expecta- tions and the Junior-Senior Banquet rounded out our junior year. We gave the seniors of ' 61 a final send-off by being their escort at their commencement. We started our freshman year with 32 members and our senior year with 31 members. We, the Class of ' 62 said good-by to R.H.S. and its good times when we received our diplomas in May, 1962. 25 Thanks Jim, I ' ll remember you on our class trip ! Another ad for our yearbook! was the cry of the seniors. REMEMBER WHEN (Right) This, can ' t be the right size, says Dar- lene as she measures for caps and gowns on Etta. (Below) Announcements and name cards made the seniors feel like seniors! The Juniors frequently enjoyed a tliriving con- cession sales at noon. Allen Holman, V. pres.; Ford Hudson, Pres.; Terry Doub, Sec.; Dan Bennett, Treas. The active juniors sold concessions at school and to fans at the home basketball games. For two weeks in tlie autumn they held their maga- zine sales. Judy Walters received a prize for being the best salesman. On September 12, the • long-awaited class rings arrived. The juniors sponsored a class basketball tourney. Following the exciting final game there was a record hop. After weeks of fun and practice they presented the junior play in the spring. The exciting junior-senior banquet climaxed the year. Spon- sors: Mrs. Mann and Mr. Coe. Late again! Several received invitations into the Beta Club. Many of them played on the basketball team and four out of the five cheerleaders were sopho- mores. Ordering class sweaters and rings were important events for the sophomores. One fund- raising project was making cider. Some of this eider was served as refreshments for the Hallo- ween Hop. At last we were one of them. The feeling of being a frosh was great. Now we would choose our own subjects. We wondered what would happen to the class- mates tliat entered high school with us. Would we all graduate together? Only time would tell. At Thanlcsgiving time we sponsored a sock hop. With mixed-up shoes, sore feet, and all, we had fun. This started our high school projects. We in the eighth grade class, with one year at Riverdale High School behind us, found it much easier to enter our second year of junior high school. We knew the school regulations and also knew just about every loop hole in them. We settled quickly into our routine and knew that this would be our last year of preparation before entering high school. The coming year would give us the privilege of choosing our classes, which would give us a choice of continuing music, or taking advanced math, science, foreign language, and commercial subjects. We enjoyed our class parties and other activi- ties. All those big upperclassmen look- ing down at us, and, oh, the empty feeling in our stomachs vjhen we were to go to a strange room for a class. What if we were late? What would they do to us? We wonder what the up- perclassmen were laughing about. Didn ' t they ever go through this? Boy, were we glad when this day was over. The day ended and later it seemed much better. We became accustomed to changing class rooms with each class, learned the names of the teachers, planned two class parties, raised the money for them, and last, but not least, we took our place as part of Riverdale High School. ANNUAL STAFF Staff members spent many hours just as Frances and Dola are, with pen and typewriter in hand. The annual staff, consisting of the senior class as a whole, editors, and advisor spent many, many hours planning, editing, and finishing the yearbook. In our frequent night sessions, many new words such as cropping, outlines, 3-R ' s, I.D. ' s copy, cuts, and several other odd sounding literary wrecks entered our hectic, and loud gab sessions. We all learned, with or without previ- ous typing instruction, how to type the numerous jobs necessary in editing the yearbook. Several nights the proverbial midnight oil burned in our headquarters. Room 1 , as our deadlines loomed before us. It was a lot of work, but it was just as much fun. 43 ROW I: R. Washier, J. Patton, J. Hart, Mrs. Mann, ROW II; C. Winebrenner, S. Cobum, J. Impton, D. The local branch of the National Beta Club spent an active year. The major project of the club was the school library. It was their duty to keep the library orderly and up to date. Each period a Beta member forfeits his study hall to act as the librarian. The members are to promote and be good examples of character, achievement and good scholastic averages. The club promoted worthy projects for the community such as the Red Cross drives. As a non-profit organization they raised money only for their expenses, some of this money came from their annual Sweetheart Dance in February. These worthy projects were under the direction of the club ' s spon- sor, Mrs. Mann. 44 ROW I: J. Furnish, D. Harter, M. Loy, ROW II: M. Close, C. Graham, J. Vinson, J. Baker, C. Voriol, M. Baker, D. Under the direction of Mrs. Campbell and f - dent director, Lynda Fisher we took on the ■ .lal- lenge of Great Expectations as our Junior Play. Having experienced a Variety Show the previous year we knew what was needed: prac- tices, scenery and lots of advertisement. Six weeks of work and fun went into the play. The costumes were designed and made with the help of a mother, Mrs. Tuscan. Three perform - ances were given on April 20, 21, and 22, 1961. 53 Behind the scenes. R 60 Even though the Comets ' record was not an excellent one, the boys showed the signs of a good athletic team. Under Coach Don Stephens, the boys showed remarkable sportsmanship and good training in basketball fundamentals. The team fought hard from the first jump ball until the final buzzer. They sported new green uni- forms the last half of the season and played some sharp ball in them. In the shots on this page, you see the Coinets and their trainer in action. Was it blocked? Strike ' um out again, Norm! 1 One of the most widespread and most lauded improvements at Riverdale this year was that in the physical education department, ini- tiated by Mr. Stephens and Miss Cool. The additions to the boys ' program were those of table tennis, badminton, tumbling, shuffle - board, archery, rope climbing, and golf, in addition to the activities previously given. Miss Cool taught tumbling, golf, archery, square dancing, stunts, Softball, and dodgeball in ad- dition to basketball, badminton, and volleyball, formerly offered. These have been valuable improvements and were very badly needed ones at Riverdale. It has brought to light the pos- sibility of a new sport, wrestUng in the school. Say, what a physique! ! ! The weight lifting pro- gram illustrated in the picture is one of many new additions to the high school ' s physical education program this year. ROW I: J. Storer, S. Washier, D. Allen, A. Ward, J.
