Indians and wild animals roamed the forests which then covered this territory. The little settlement was named Spiceland because of the great number of spice bushes which infested this vicinity, , The Spiceland postoffice was established in l858. In 1347 a town plot was surveyed, and it was at this time that Spiceland was actually put on the map. . Inhabitants of Spiceland gave attention to education from the very first. The first meeting-house--also school was taught in it--was erected of logs in 1827. The Monthly Meeting in a few years built a larger school house, and this later became one of the Academy buildings. In 1870 the first qgradu- ating class, consisting of two members, was graduated. By l885 the school occupied three buildings and was incorporated by the Friends. The Academy ceased to exist in 1921, and was succeeded by the Spiceland High School. It was an outstanding educational institution for eighty-seven years. Many famous authors and educators were among the graduated of the Academy. Since athletics have entered into the schools, Spiceland has been gifted with two new gymnasiums. The latter, erected in l957, is a beautiful structure, combination gymnasi- um and auditorium. The Spicelane Friends Meeting wa- offi cially established in l829. Most of the early settlers of Spiceland came from North Carolina and Virginia, and belonged to the Society of Friends Churle Wil on ' , 2 - h 'P -1 Q '- . s ' s as if QL- ..,......i......... ...-....--...
