E L VA BOGUE In, September, 1925, there were twenty-five shy Freshmen who entered a great institution of learning. As organization is the first step toward success, a class meeting was called and officers were elected. At the beginning of our second year we felt much braver. Some of our boys played on the basketball team that year. Then we were Juniors. We are now upper classmen. So many important things happened. Among them was our class play, Aaron Slick from Pumpkin Creek, given December 6, 1927, and the Junior-Senior Reception given May 11, 1928, The summer soon passed and we found we were Seniors- We worked hard on our Euganean and our class play, The Goose Hangs High, was given May 14th and 15th. Now as our school days are nearing a close, we look back on the many ac- tivities where our class was always represented but we know that with such a beginning there will be bright futures aheadfor us in the school of life. the'---rw ff W ' ri Y,,,,...i..J -,,.,, , , , . All enjoyed a rollicking evening of fun around a large campfire, especially the boys and girls who put on the boxing gloves. The jitney Festival was the next thing to claim our attention. Some were well satisfied while others were thoroughly disgusted. Some were quite funny and others were pitiful, but we will have to admit it was worth the money and the class as a whole feels duty I The following is word for word what the fortune teller told us: Donald Black is spending his remaining days in a padded cell at East Haven. Well, he just went crazy over that little black-eyed Susan he met at college-- that's all. Elmer Brown has become manager of the New York Yanks. Elva Bogue has become a very famous artist. Rachel Stanley, oh, I forgotfit was Rachel Harter, but it ain't no more. She is operator of her own Little White Kitchen. Paul Gardner was honored with first prize in the 'Round the World Trot. Now that he is wealthy he can't decide which blonde he prefers. Mary Louise Hiatt is now teaching in the Kindergarten in Ogden. Wilbur Griffin is a taxi driver in Peking, China. Carrie Johnson has become quite an influential person in governmental affairs, in other words, another Clay or Webster- Edgar Hall has ended up working in a garage and to satisfy his lost dream to be an undertaker, he buries all the old worn out bodies of mechanism. Hildreth McIntyre was married to Chet the night after Commencement. Their family of three is very happy. Paul Lacey is old and gray. He is traveling with a carnival and is in a side show. His long beard is his only consolation, for a blonde broke his heart and he hates brunettes. Clive Smith is an old maid who is a missionary in the heart of Africa. Russel Pate is head manager in a cosmetic factory and is working on an in- vention to turn brunettes into blondes. F' I .......K,-.:. ,,,,... Kenneth Pickering is now professor in Harvard University. Dorothy Pickering is a great author who is writing for the largest magazines in the United States- Robert Reece is hauling coal for Spiceland Coal and Grain Company and is eating off of his mother-in-law, Bernice Ward is an old maid seamstress. Forrest Virgne graduates from Stanford University and is the Democratic N candidate for the United States Presidency. I . Martha Williams is still living in Ogden. Folks say she is preparing her f ' trousseau. 1 And what will happen to us after this is hard to tell. Like a ship we put out to sea, Our goal is far away, Though many our trials may be, We draw closer day by day. Our guide is our conscience onlyg We will not be led astray, Although we are many times lonely We look from the past away. We see in the future before us Great heights we must attain, Our work is essential for thus Comes sunshine after the rain. So with head erect and face forward, We leave our dear old high school, Our motto will always be Onward, True, Honest, and Brave, our rule. -ur. I 5, Jflbiiiffia 1, . Merle: Well, Joe, you've been here about long enough now to begin relating some of those fine old stories you used to tell-how about it? Joe: Well, you know there's a story I've saved just to ask you about. I've thought about it for a long time. You have heard me speak of Alphonso Higgins? He was one of the ucharactersq' in our town. By keeping his mouth shut he had become famous. Words were to him like carrier-pigeons-to be released only singly and in some emergency. 'Fon, Higgins can keep still in seven languages, folks used to say of him and yet when he died he was not greatly mourned. His silence had won him respect but no love. These men, Merle, are the characters that make me question that old theory Silence is Golden. I can't figure-just what that something is that makes me question it. Merle: I've enjoyed your story and feel as if I was well acquainted with Fon but as you say that story does leave a question in one's mind. Sally: Though I haven't had a voice in this conversation-I've been lending my ear-and now, if you'll permit, I'll prove by another story- M,erle: Delighted. Sally: Then fair countrymen let silence reign. Once a peasant with a troubled conscience went to a Monk for advice. The peasant had circulated slander about a friendwonly to find out later that it wasn't true. The Monk was old and wise. If you want to make peace with your con- science, he said, you must fill a bag with chicken down, go to every dooryard in the village, and drop in each of them one fluffy feather. I 'I I. .I :Il rp,----- The Eugclxwecsn --.-.vnu -:I I I The peasant did as he was told. Then he came back to the Monk and an- nounced that he had done penance for his folly. 'LNot yet, said the Ivlonk sternly. uTake up your bag, go the rounds again, and gather up every feather that you have dropped. But the wind must have blown them all away. Yes, my son, replied the lvlonk, and so it is with gossip. Words are easily dropped, but no matter how hard you try, you can never get them back again. . This speech was like a shower on a granite walk. The wise old Monk told ' t his words in building beautiful things, while Alphonso Higgins wasted his words I ' by hoarding them. Now I'm sure no one even guessed that the Monk's words f on life was the better part. Therefore, if you ask SallyfIt's Fact, not Silence that's golden. -Bernice Ward. May 4-Class Party. N The Junior High School was represented during the season of 1928-1929 by . one of the strongest teams in its history. Many of the boys were big, strong and l powerful, and if some did not have these qualities, they were quick, dead shots at the basket, and sure footed. At the close of the season they displayed excellent team work. Kennard Junior High School furnished the stiffest opposition of any of the Junior High.Schoo1 teams played. That bunch will stand watching in the future. The Junior High hates to see you go, but great things are expected of you.
