' YOUR LE TTER' This year's English department, like other departments, is experiencing the change made from quarter classes to semester classes. All of the teachers agree that having their classes a semester long enable them to cover more material and to cover it in more depth. The English department which is made up of four teachers consists of Mrs. Riewerts, Mrs. Dow-Wyatt, Mrs. Lenski and Mrs. Knight. Mrs. Dow-Wyatt teaches freshmen and sophomore English classes. In her classes she works mainly on grammar and organized writing, but also gets into reading popular novels. For extra credit her students can play trivia games, which gives them a fun way to learn. Mrs. Lenski also teaches freshmen and sophomore English, along with a college prep course, Senior English. She is well-satisfied with the new text books which enable her to teach grammar as a course, and in the context of student writing. Homework assignments can be given in grammar and composition from the text book, thus allowing her to cover more material sequentially. Mrs. Riewerts teaches drama courses, speech class, General English 9, and is the advisor to the yearbook. This year something very special happened in Speech class. They entered the Christmas Talent Show and performed, 'Twas the Night Before Christmas', and took 3rd prize. ln World of Drama, they went to Circa ll during school to learn such things as, make-up, dancing, acting, and costumes. This is Mrs. Riewerts' first year in yearbook and she HAS DONE A SUPER JOB. Her yearbook class took a day to attend a yearbook seminar at Augustana college, and they came back with some great ideas for this year's yearbook. Mrs. Knight, the last of our English teachers, is back after taking a one year leave. Among the courses she teaches are English ll which is also a college prep course, General English ll, and she is the advisor to the Rampage, a school newspaper, which is printed in the Daily Dispatch weekly. Mrs. Knight is work- ing through her last year at Riverdale High School. She is retiring after this year. It seems looking back at the English department, we have a fine staff of teachers who can make their classes fun but challenging. The student may complain a lot about the work and the teachers, but in the long-run, we will benefit from the knowledge we have gained in the classes from our teachers! ix X :s

This year 3l students enrolled in French. Two graduated at the end of the first semester, two moved away and four dropped which left the enrollment down to 23 at the end of the first semester. - lt is hopeful that there will be two French classes next year. French l is for those stu- dents that wish to begin their French studies. French ll is for those students who wish to embellish upon their French studies. When asked how does the French class help the Riverdale student, Mrs. Fritz replied: Basically the students become aware of an- other culture, another people, their country, and language. lt provides a whole new vista of learning when a student becomes aware that he can communicate in another tongue.
