Dr. Rucker wanted to work in or around a metropolitan area and stay in the midwest. Now that Dr. Rucker has gotten to know the school district and it's past situations, and is up to date on it's problems, he has set goals for the future school years. His first goal is to encourage high expectations for the students and faculty at Riverdale. He would like to have our school accredited by North Central Association which writes standards for public schools. His second goal is to build school spirit and enthusiasm. Dr. Rucker's third goal is to figure out the best way to use school funds so less programs will have to be cut out. WELCOME DR, RUCKER X QJ V6 X -1 X fix Lt ,.,MQWM,, Mm. G HAN ZOE CLENDENIN The fourteen years I have spent with the students of Riverdale have been some of the most enjoyable and most rewarding years of my life. The seven years spent as a bus driver were never dull to say the least. During the past seven years as a high school secretary I have seen the kindergarten students that rode my bus pass through the doors of the high school as mature, well adjusted individuals. I am so happy to have been a part of their lives and a part of one of the finest high schools in this area. THANK YOU RIVER- DALE DOROTHY PALMER I have really enjoyed working for Riverdale for the past I9 years. I love children of all ages, especially teenagers. I really get a kick out of graduates return- ing for a visit. I enjoy all kinds of sports and music. I enjoy being with young people and they share a big part of my life. Riverdale High School has a lot to offer students and I am happy to be associated with River- dale. I hope in some small way I have helped a few students in their quest for Education. MR. GILLESPIE This is Mr. GilIespie's second year here at Riverdale High School. He listens to the students point of view and is sym- pathetic to their problems. The one major thing he did, with all the stu- dents approval, was help to get the juice machine back in the cafeteria. We are all looking forward to another year. HOW ME THE WAY 32 W Q if 2 Wiz ia. e v M The counselors at Riverdale are a big part in deciding the future of the students. Mrs. Rollerson and Mr. Bodine help the students with their college futures, and Mrs. VerCautren is our academic advisor. On the more personal side Riverdale has counselors that will help us too. John Cameron and Paul Roome can be very helpful people. 3' ! A X SOUNDS OF ILE C The Library has a new librarian this year. Mrs. Traylor is the Unit District Librarian. She has a goal to reach this year, she would like to see more participation from the students and faculty in the library for either leisure reading, or research. Since Mrs. Traylor is only here one and a half days during a week, she is not able to help everyone all the time. So Mrs. DeCap is here to help students find books, research material, magazines, etc . . . She is our Library Assistant who has been here for eleven years. This year the library was semi-closed. Only three stu- dents are allowed in the book area at a time. The books are not to leave the book area without being checked out first. Ei Q .4 .- - 1 4 J WORKING FOI? THE WEEKEND This year the Student Aids worked hard as usual. The janitors worked before the school year began, repainting and making repairs on the school. After the government cuts, the cooks tried hard to make decent meals with what they had. The study hall monitor, Mr. Hamilton, attempted to boost the school spirit by posting student of the week, decorating the walls with pins for the wrestlers, basketballs for the basketball players and megaphones for cheerleaders. He even painted his desk black and gold. Even though the Student Aids don't get much appre- ciation, they are working to better our school. All of the classes are using originality and being very cre- ative. More students have been interested in working with clay and on the potters wheel than in the past. There are many art classes, the newest one is pho- tography in which you must have 35 mm camera. Mr. Tadlock feels there are many more students in- volved in Art than before. VIOKLD Qc' 5 ops ll l TAKING CARE Q, 1. OF BUSINESS ACCOUNTING I AND II A lot of students who take business classes don't go on to college. They find jobs straight out of high school. Typing III and IV are independent classes to give the students experience. Ms. Mar- tin gives the students a certain amount of jobs to have finished by the end of the week. This helps the students to learn how to space their time. This year Mrs. Seevers substituted for Mrs. Tad- lock while she took leave. Mrs. Seevers said that she liked teaching Accounting and that it was very interesting. Besides Accounting I and II, Mrs. Tadlock teaches Algebra II and Trigonometry. There are two other business teachers also. Ms. Martin teaches Office Practice, Typing I, Il, III, and IV. Shorthand I, Il, and III Mr. Simmons teaches Introduction to Business. AAU Mills The Consumer Education class was busy again this year, filling out tax forms under the guid- ance of Riverdale's Con- sumer Education teacher Mrs. Kertz. The course is designed to teach stu- dents how to manage on their own by shopping wisely and being a smart consumer. Students are required to get married to teach them about bud- geting. ,N V Q was Q F t I. Traci Daniels, Ken Burkett. 2. Gary Doyle, Kathy Mumma, Andy Fish, David DeB laey, Dave Miller, Doug Smith. This year's Drivers Education students were introduced to the thrill of driving by their brave instructor Mr. Wayne Brink- meier. Mr. Brinkmeier said that there is basically two parts to the course lab and classroom. The division called lab con- sists of different skills that the students were required to learn. A few of these skills are starting the car, stopping the car, up and down hill parking, near and far lane turn-abouts, and what to do in skids. The classroom consists of other skills such as knowing which insurance to buy, buying a car and financing it, and the rules of the road. ' YOUR LE TTER' This year's English department, like other departments, is experiencing the change made from quarter classes to semester classes. All of the teachers agree that having their classes a semester long enable them to cover more material and to cover it in more depth. The English department which is made up of four teachers consists of Mrs. Riewerts, Mrs. Dow-Wyatt, Mrs. Lenski and Mrs. Knight. Mrs. Dow-Wyatt teaches freshmen and sophomore English classes. In her classes she works mainly on grammar and organized writing, but also gets into reading popular novels. For extra credit her students can play trivia games, which gives them a fun way to learn. Mrs. Lenski also teaches freshmen and sophomore English, along with a college prep course, Senior English. She is well-satisfied with the new text books which enable her to teach grammar as a course, and in the context of student writing. Homework assignments can be given in grammar and composition from the text book, thus allowing her to cover more material sequentially. Mrs. Riewerts teaches drama courses, speech class, General English 9, and is the advisor to the yearbook. This year something very special happened in Speech class. They entered the Christmas Talent Show and performed, 'Twas the Night Before Christmas', and took 3rd prize. ln World of Drama, they went to Circa ll during school to learn such things as, make-up, dancing, acting, and costumes. This is Mrs. Riewerts' first year in yearbook and she HAS DONE A SUPER JOB. Her yearbook class took a day to attend a yearbook seminar at Augustana college, and they came back with some great ideas for this year's yearbook. Mrs. Knight, the last of our English teachers, is back after taking a one year leave. Among the courses she teaches are English ll which is also a college prep course, General English ll, and she is the advisor to the Rampage, a school newspaper, which is printed in the Daily Dispatch weekly. Mrs. Knight is work- ing through her last year at Riverdale High School. She is retiring after this year. It seems looking back at the English department, we have a fine staff of teachers who can make their classes fun but challenging. The student may complain a lot about the work and the teachers, but in the long-run, we will benefit from the knowledge we have gained in the classes from our teachers! ix X :s 5 , , ,,W,.W This year 3l students enrolled in French. Two graduated at the end of the first semester, two moved away and four dropped which left the enrollment down to 23 at the end of the first semester. - lt is hopeful that there will be two French classes next year. French l is for those stu- dents that wish to begin their French studies. French ll is for those students who wish to embellish upon their French studies. When asked how does the French class help the Riverdale student, Mrs. Fritz replied: Basically the students become aware of an- other culture, another people, their country, and language. lt provides a whole new vista of learning when a student becomes aware that he can communicate in another tongue. LIVI G INSIDE MY ELF ,Q J ,M Mr. Dirks' Health classes this year are concentrating more on the health and safety of others. Many guest speakers are coming in in- cluding ones from the Quint City Drug Abuse Center and from the Mental Health Center. Another ad- dition to the health department is new books. Also, this year, instead of just learning the steps to artifi- cial respiration, the students prac- tice the technique themselves on Resuscitation Annie CSessiej from the Red Cross Center in Moline, and are even receiving official First Aid Cards. LEATH I? A D LACE Home economics class this year spent much of their time helping the children learn skills at the Elementary school. The pro- gram consists of two parts. First there is spe- cial learning assistance for students in classes. Secondly, there are classes taught in the areas of Math, English, and Pre-Vocational training. Those enrolled in special classes are scheduled as they would be for any other classes. This program is set up and run by Mr. Michel and Miss Porter. STUDENTS HELP TU TOR IN MANY SUBJECTS The Tutoring program consists of aca- demic achievers helping their peers who are having difficulty with certain sub- jects. There was something new added this year, some of the tutors are working in the Resource Room and helping the students in there. This program was set up to prevent failing at Riverdale. lt was started during the I978-l979 school year by Mr. Bodine, Mr. Michel, and former principal Pat Grady. All quarter classes were changed to semester classes. This eliminated a lot of confusing problems for the students, and hassle for the teachers. The biggest change was in the participation policy. For not dressing out, a student would lose six points. The teacher would then send the students to the library to do a report on the activity going on in class. lf the report was done before the end of the period, three points were regained. The other three points were lost for not participating in class. This new policy has been very effective, and few students are failing P.E. We are still hindered by large classes Can average of 36 per classy, but student interest has increased, said Mr. Carbee. The program will lose five seniors this year. There were four freshmen out this year and only two last year. Mr Brinkmeier likes to see lots of freshmen participate. Winning our own invitational has become a habit- three years in a row we ve placed first. Riverdale has re-captured the conference champion- ship for the second consecutive year. A big accomplishment was defeat- ing Moline two years in a row. Riverdale has the toughest class A schedule in the state of lllinois, taking on five double A schools. Looking back over the season, one of the team highlights was defeating Dunlap High School at the Monmouth Tourney - because Dunlap took second place in the state tournament. Coach Brinkmeier said, l'd like to see more kids participate because golf is a carry-over sport. You can play when you're 70. lt's a gentleman's - ,, , r-.Jl' . .il , . K fl I sport. This year's varsity football team which began the season ranked l5th in the state, ended with a very disappointing 2-7 record. Qffensively the Rams were strong both on the run and in the air. The passing attack was helped by a good line for pro- tection, and a patient young sophomore quarter- back that could depend on his very talented pass receivers. The running game was also strong, with good, fast, and powerful backs. Defensively, the Rams were very tough in the middle of the line, that put good pressure on the opposing quarter- back, but when they did find time to throw, the Rams' defensive secondary was weak and had some problems. After losing a very close game against power house Fulton, Coach Parker felt the team's confidence was lost and the Rams were guilty of playing sloppy ball, and they dropped the last three games easily. Penalties also played a big part in the team's close losses. Once again the Rams were small in numbers, and faced some very costly injuries during the season. Coach Parker, along with assistant Coach Foster, are looking forward to next season, hoping for a good turnout to produce a winning team. OBODY DOES IT BETTER This year's I98l Fresh-Soph football team had a tough season. With the lack of experience, size, speed, and a passing game, it was hard to have a winning season. But this deter- mined Ram team worked hard for what they wanted. There were many ups and downs. They did however, have a strong offensive line, and strong defensive line. Next year the fresh-soph coaches are looking forward to a quicker team, a larger turnout, and more experience. I. Dennis Adams. Bo Sweet. 2. Shane McCormick. 3. The front line. 4. Shane McCormick 5. They were shuffled around from the jr. high to the elementary, and finally to the high school, because of the once again, warped floor. The season went pretty well for the girls, compared to the past years, with an overall record of Il-ll, and a conference record of 8-6. The highlight of the season was catching the first place title in District. This was the first time ever for Riverdale to win volleyball district. They went on to section- als, but were defeated in the first match against Lanark, but they did a terrific job this year. Another high point during the season was the arrival of Michael Allen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tadlock. During Mrs. Tadlock's leave, Mr. Oltman took over Varsity while still coaching Fresh-Soph and did a superb job. Riverdale had two girls on the conference team. All Confer- ence: Lisa Bass.
