Gillespie, strug- gled throughout the year with the budget. Several programs were cut or threatened. This brought opposition and many of the programs became self-sup- ported. Caused by the failure of the parents to vote, the defeat of the referendum in November was a big letdown for Ryan and the school system. Despite the eight percent tax increase for transportation, the Riverdale school system was quoted as ubarely holding its own. lVlr. Gillespie continued the task of Director of Career Edu- cation. He guided all education in order to provide students of Riverdale with an education which equipped them for their future in a career. Nlr. Gillespie 6 Administration Sets gas, Board mem bers. Clockwise, lVlr. Mr. Ryan lVlrs. VandeVoorde Ryan, lVlr. Ver- Cautren, Ann Snook, Nl r. Saucha, lVlrs. Mitton. ,A Mrs. Pelletier Nl rs. Lackey Mrs. Brooks Many Goals Mr. Grady, Principal Mrs. Palmer, Secretary. Mrs. Clendenin, Receptionist. Mr. Grady, principal of Riverdale High School, strived for several things this year. One of these things was improved custodial services. A few students helped out by sweeping the halls and doing other odd jobs, this gave Mr. Bonds, the custodian, more time to work on more impor- tant things. Another thing he would like to see is the reinstatement ofthe Area Vocational program. It was dis- continued this year as one of the many cutbacks due to the new bud- get. For something new, he would like to see a foreign language pro- gram at Riverdale. He feels it is something the school has always needed and should have. One problem this year was the locked restroom situation, where locks were placed on the doors to prevent vandalism and destruction. Mr. Grady said he was pleased with the way the students carried out their protest to have them unlocked, where, instead of destruction and vandalism, they signed peditions and took them to the board with their plan for keeping them unlocked. -'JT' Mr. Bodine, Guidance Counselor. Mrs. Simpson, Guidance Secretary. Mrs. Rollerson, Guidance Counselr. 7 Cooks show enthusiasm The cooks showed much more enthusiasm this year. They dressed up in costumes for Hal- loween. They also gave the Ala Carte section its own line. Sepa- rating the Ala Carte cut down congestion and allowed the menu to be expanded. This move was very popular with the students. The library added a new video recorder and camera. Nlrs. De- cap recorded many television programs which were used by almost all of the teachers. It was also used to film the home basketball and wrestling meets. The Transportation Depart- ment was brought relief from rising gas prices by a Tranpor- tation referendum in November. Iona Wigant, transportation de- partment head, Dan Kennedy, head bus mechanic, and the school maintenance department were very thankful for the mild winter. Nlr. Mrs. Pat Eisenberg, along with Mrs. Sharon Riewerts taught a one semester class called World of Drama. Students in this new class read plays and studied them from both literary and pro duction stand points. Other popular English courses were Journalism, Speech, Mythology Composition, and Individualized Reading. Each of these classes helped students im- prove their communication skills. He taught Life Span, American His- tory and Twenties and Thirties, among other courses. Miss Glass and Mr. Lancaster rounded out the department. One of Miss Glass's most popular courses was psychology, a class from which students felt they benefited a great deal. Miss Glass also accom- panied groups of students when they appeared on THE BAXTERS television show. One of Mr. Lan- caster's most popular classes was History of Music. Students learned the origin of different types of mu- sic and really enjoyed the class. Mr. Paul Parker taught Algebra I, and Pre-Algebra. Mr. Dan Oitman taught Geometry, Algebra I, Sr. Math, and Pre-Algebra. Mrs. Kathy Tadiock taught Math I. She also taught Algebra II first semester, and Trig. second semester. Mrs. Tadiock also taught Accounting for the business department. The schedule for 1979-80 did not include Metrics, but as popular as it was in 1978, everyone's sure it will be back. gf' B-hh THODE IS WELCOMED BACK TO STAY .- ..-r..s U is One of the biggest changes in the business department was the return of Mrs. Thode from a two-year leave of absence. as She taught Shorthand, Typing I, and II, and Intro to Busi- ness. Mrs. Thode said she missed everyone, and was very happy to be back. Mrs. Park and Mrs. Thode attended meetings with the pos- sibility of turning the business department into competency- based classrooms using individualized instruction. Mrs. Tadlock said that she enjoyed teaching her accounting classes, which she said were the largest so far. The year was begun with a new agriculture teacher, lVliss Sallows. At semester, lVlr. Howard took over. One of the agri- culture department's main projects was putting the finishing touches on the new greenhouse and ag, building. ' One of the most popular agriculture classes was ag construction. The students learned about basic elec- tricity, pouring concrete and are required to submit one wood project. In Consumer Ed. students saw many films and Hlmstrips on such subjects as credit, gyps and frauds, tax filing, balancing checkbooks, budgeting, llsmart buying procedures, as well as other basic economic topics. The students were also respon- sible for writing a book report which dealt with some aspect of consumer education. This year Mrs. Kertz invited Mr. Michael Eidson, President of the Port Byron State Bank, to speak on banking procedures and services while the class was on the banking unit. The students also covered unit pricing where Mrs. Kertz borrowed groceries from Winter's Red Fox so that the students could visually learn to calculate the price per measure. The class was very helpful in preparing students for their future role as a consumer. 20 Huh, what? Randy and Marlana finally tied the knot. Less variety was offered becaused of lack of new equipment. Cuts in the number of classes offered caused overcrowded classes, making supervision of classes very difhcult for teachers. Some of the classes which remained and which students especially liked were tennis, softball, and volleyball. Doug Johnson Top Right: lVlr. Carbee 24 NJ V I A Julie DeFauw, Shawna Jackson, Sue Houzenga The Riverdale Music Department ac- quired new personnel in both the band and the choir. Mr. Fred Taylor took responsi- bility for directing and teaching the band and choir. The band worked hard for two weeks before school started last fall to prepare for marching season. There were two main changes that came about this year in the Marching Rams. The hrst was that the band memorized all marching music and performed their shows without it. The sec- ond change was that for each show, the band played a dance number and danced while playing it. The Music Department suffered several budget cuts, including all funds for trips, but Rockford College paid expenses for buses and food so the band was able to attend one of their games. The Marching Rams performed a half-time show for the basketball game and took a tour of the college. The band performed for other activities such as the Homecoming bon1ire,a Thanksgiving service, basketball games, wrestling meets, Spring and Christmas concerts and contest. This year's Junior class was led by Ernie Lane, president, Lynn Plumb, vice-president, and Terri Creen, secretary-treasurer. They started the year off by selling seat cushions to raise money for Prom. T Football concessions, as in the past, were the times when the Juniors put on their extra warm clothes, and went out in the bleachers and sold lots of hot chocolate. All the money from the concessions went toward Prom. During the Homecoming festivities the Junior Float won a hard-fought second place, with the attendants being Terri Creen and Bob Jurevitz. Homecoming would not have been suc- cessful without the help of these Student Council Representatives, Chad lVlcCoy, Reese Weatherholt, Kim Nelson, Ken Geiger, and Julie Lancaster. When asked how they felt about being an upperclassmen, they responded that it was great! They were looking forward to all the upcoming privileges, and the excitement of being an upperclassmen, but the biggest thrill would be when they became seniors. f l l n 1 ll if ' M R E N EGAD ES ll M K 4 QQ fl Q 'X ,.-.Rf ee i V4 I B , I ht -two I Q az f' fi if 5 W ev 4- 'A QL, 5 , ,Q 1 L Ml N W' Q A X? Also, the Freshmen elected students to represent them on the Student Council, these were Cheryl Reveal, Missy Moshier, Lisa Bull, Steve Borschel, and Dawn Bender. The Student Council representatives had their first duty of the year deciding on the Hoat for Homecoming The theme was UBye, Bye, Birdie , it received third in the voting. liHow do you feel about High School? As Freshmen they were commonly asked this question. Doug Smith answered, HIt's better than Junior High, also, HI feel more impor- tant. Chris Biehler says it's the same as she expected except, HIt's easier than I thought. 68 President: Blake Russell, Vice-President: Dave Woodburn, Sec- retary-Treasurer: Tom May. 1 f 2 Wa im- N' T - a5J4i,, i K -.. Extremely cold weather finally paid off with a 35-13 victory over the Erie Cardinals. The activities started with the third annual udummy hunt . This year the dummy hunt was a little more complicated. There were two dummies, the right one and wrong one. The right one was found by senior, Debbie Guinn, and the other was by Mark Ensey, also a senior. The powder-puff derby was also active again this year. The varsity consisted of juniors and seniors who were defeated by the junior-varsity, freshman and sophomores, with a score of 14-0. Using the T. V. movies theme, the class floats were constructed. The senior class failed to quit when their float was vandalized the night before the parade. The reconstructed float placed first in the class Hoat contest. Swift Kick concluded the festivities with the traditional Homecoming dance. ui 7? vt '93 Q .44 4.-N. ' ,,,, s H -, . .., iL-wax I 9' The Outdoor Club's Hoat. Drama Club's Hoat, A, fe fa? 'W' This year's varsity football season did not go quite as well as expected, ending with a 3-6 record. After the disappointing hrst five games, the Rams broke out of their losing streak with an impressive Homecoming victory. Their 35-13 win was aided by the return of injured Scott VonLienen. After this encour- aging victory, Riverdale won two out of their last three games, Beating Newman 36-21 and Prophetstown 14-0 while losing to the state runner-up Amboy, 19-O. The Ram's record did not re- Hect the effort put out by the players. They earned great stats. and had tive players mak- ing all conference team. The problems came in the area of turnovers which caused the hrst three losses, all by a single touchdown. Coach Parker sum- marized the season by saying, 74 we pn. Brinkmeier 80 mi we ' , TJ:-f ,ESM get y The 1979 golf team reached a goal they set two years ago, that was to reach the state hnals. The team enjoyed their finest year at state and placed eighth. They tied for first place in the district and tied for third place in the sectional which qualified them for the State Tournament. This was the first time a Riv- erdale golf team has made it in the state finals, They also won their own Invitational Tournament with a new low score of 311 strokes. This was the second time in the three years the tournament has been held that Riverdale has won, They placed second in the Rockridge Tournament. The Riverdale golf team entered the LaSalle Peru-St. Bede Tournament this year for the first time, There were 28 schools entered and 22 teams were double A schools. Riverdale placed eighth. The overall season record was eight wins, three losses and one tie. The three losses were by a total of five strokes. They lost two matches by one stroke and the other by three strokes. The team will lose a few very fine golfers this year. They are Jim Groves, Todd Irwin, Jim Lindley and Ron Willhite. They have been with the pro- gram for four years. The Junior Varsity record this year was six wins and three losses It is the hope of the underclassmen to continue the fine tradition that this year's golf team has established. It truly took a lot of hard work and dedi- cation on the part of all girls interested. The team was not supported by the school, but rather by a Booster's Club. The girls were coached by Coaches Paul Parker and Kathy Tadlock. The team did very well this year placing third at the Sav- anna Invitational and taking fifths at Erie and at Confer- ence Tournaments. Especially outstanding participants were Julie Wildermuth and Lorrie Jurevitz. Besides doing a good job all season, they were able to compete at the State Tournaments. Julie re- ceived first place in the dis- cus and Lorrie received sixth in the 880 run. GIRLS TRACK RECORD MEET Newman Relays Fulton Relays Orion Newman Savanna Invit. Varsity Cheerleaders: Robyn Young, Jeanne Snook, Sue Thomas, Leigh Bowman, and Laurie Lonergan, The Ram's Junior Varsity Wrestling team enjoyed a very successful season in 1979-80. Their dual meet record was 13-3 with close losses to Savanna, Moline, and Rock Island. Each of these matches final out- come was decided by the outcome of one match. The team was also a strong tournament team, lin- ishing second in both the Lanark Tournament ia Var- sity Tournamentl and in the Conference J.V. Tourna- ment. In the Conference Tournament the Rams captured tive championships, two runner-ups and one third. Brian Maraden, Daryl Wulf, Jim Lindley, Kevin Saathofi, and Ron Willhite, were champions. John Robinson and John Colegrove iinished second and Ar- lan Frels finished third. The year's team was led by two undefeated wres- tlers, Daryl Wulf and Kevin Saathoff, but the back- bone of the team was the iive seniors. These wres- tlers lJim Lindley, Kevin Saathoff, Ron Willhite, Kevin Anderson, Arlan Frelsl were able to wrestle in Varsity matches when they were needed and also to push those wrestlers ahead of them in the practice room. These five seniors provided a great deal of leadership throughout the season. The success of the underclassmen was also shown in a third place finish in a strong lield in Erie Fresh- Soph Tournament and in the East Moline Fresh-Soph meet. The experience these returning wrestlers gained from this years competition is an important training ground for next year's success on the Varsity level. 91 lst Row: Randy Fincher, Randy Bodorff, Ken Burkett, Doug DeBuysere, Neal Mumma, 2nd Row: Alan Lanning, Steve Bor- schel, Sonny Field, Dave Weatherington, Don Miller, ,, f 'rv fit K ... iff, - X i 1 QM 92 ea ..l-ta:s5.:smQ- lst Row: Beri Holland, Paula Schave, Tonya Lindskog, 2nd Row: Debi Coder, Shari Baff, Julie DeFauw, Mindy Baff, 3rd Row: Ann Shore, Keliy Sutton, Brenda Craig, Kris Kouski, Ab- sent: Deanne Hayes, Diane Thomas. It's advisor, Mr. Bill Krahe, helps the of1'icers, Debbie Hoffman, pres., Chuck Peterson, v. pres.g and Johanne Morphew, sec.-tres. The main purpose of this club is to let the students get out and enjoy the outdoors. They learn more about nature and to better appreciate the world around them. Outdoor Club plans and participates in going on ca- noeing, camping, and skiing trips and many other outdoor activities. They went camping at Lake Aqua Na wear Wis- consin. While at the lake they got to go canoeing. Another camping trip took them to Maquoketa Caves. Comments were that both spots were beautiful. They also had a hay-rack ride, roller skating, some hiking and ice skating. One special plan the club had was to take a CPR class. One extra thing that ROC otfers is the opportunity to be in 4-H. The club works together on a project to have in com- petition at the fair. v'r4 P - . .fs . .6 .XA -9 ..--r.. lst Row: M. Clevenger, J. Marshall, D. Phillippe, M. Drama Club Acting for Pleasure One of the school's more popular clubs this year was the Riverdale Drama Club. Mrs. Sharon Riewerts was the advisor. She was helped by a staff of officers who were Dorothy DeClercq, pres., Sherry Enright, v. pres., Michele Logsdon, sec- tres. The club had regular meetings, at which they planned money-making projects and group trips. On these trips they went out to Circa '21 and even to Chi- cago to see llAnnie. This gave them the chance to learn more and improve their acting talents. It also proved to be alot of fun and very exciting. At their meetings, they practiced for speech contest. For this the students would choose some material which they would perform in front of a judge in the hopes of re- ceiving an award. Preparing for contest took a lot of hard work, time, and money on the students part. In the long-run it was well worth it, said a few participants. For those members who worked hard there was a re- ward at the end of the year. Members were able to earn either a varsity or junior var- sity pin by earning points. lst Row: Husted, Mary Phil- lippe, Tonya Lindskog, Lisa Creen, Tammy Knight, 2nd Row: Kim Cro- ckett, Ernie Lane, Dorothy DeClercq, Sherry Enright, Mike Lonergan, Kim Heddon, 3rd Row: Jill Frazier, Chris Biehler, Pennie Combs, Polly Has- kins, Matt DeCap, Dean Bruner, Chuck Peterson, Jeff Schutts. They had the help of the bas- ketball and wrestling boosters to linance this project. The members show themselves to be a small but enthusiastic club. Under the helpful eye of lVlrs. DeCap, students checked books out and maintained the pop machines in the cafeteria and teachers' lounge. If any profit was earned it went in a fund for purchasing audio-visual equipment for the school. One thing they did this year was try to alleviate the problem with the rest rooms. When we came back to school in the fall, we came back to locked rest rooms. The only way we could use them was to have a teacher unlock them. Stu- dent Council sponsored a program in which any student who wanted to participate, could fill out an appli- cation to become a rest room montior. The application consisted of three major questions: name, the hour free, and why they thought that the program should be put to use. The Student Council formed a com- mittee which chose from the applicants to monitor the rest rooms. Other activities that they have sponsored were the annual Homecoming Dance and the Christmas assem- bly. At the Christmas assembly, students signed up for a variety-talent show, and the obstacle course. The holiday celebration lasted two hours. Student Council also sponsored the movie TOMMY which was shown soon after we got back from Christmas vacation. There were differences of opinion from the students about the movie TOlVllVlY. Student Council decided to solve that problem by letting the students voice their opinion on the movie that they'd enjoy watching. 104 SEVERAL ACTIVITIES 2' X' S ff- gd ff if ' 1 , . The ceremonies began at 8:00 P.lVI. with an invocation from Rev. Taylor. Speeches were then made by Salutato- rian Nlarty Clevenger, and Valedictorian Jim Lindley. After that, as IVIr. Grady read the class roll, friends and relatives of the graduates watched the school board members hand out diplomas to the new graduates. In special recognition of Laurie Oney for all her determination in keeping up in school despite the tragedy that struck her in the early part of the year, the se- nior class and audience gave a standing ovation as she received her diploma. IVlr. Ryan then gave a short speech and presented Arlan Frels with the Su- perintendant's Award. The benediction was given by Rev. Taylor and the new Graduates proceeded out of the gymnasium. He was a loyal and understand- ing person, who had what seemed to be.an inborn talent for anticipating and appreciating oth- ers' feelings and ideas. All those who knew Len knew him to be a good friend, one who wouldn't fail when things were rough. Len's untimely death has left an empty space in our lives, one that can only be partially filled by keeping his memory of him alive with us forever. The breeze it blows, and the trees they bend V And up from the sky he smiles at them For though sadness is great, and mourners grieve Only he knows what its like to be free. -- , p tl-mill' :Til ull 'I .'
