The Riverdale School Board meets at least once a month to decide different things for the whole school. Their mainjob is to set up policies for the school. In April the School Board election was held and Mrs. Jean Mitton was re-elected to the Board along with Mr. Virgil Mumma to take the place of Mr. Schutts. ORDER O TOF CHAO Assisting Mr. Grady in the office are Mrs. Dorothy Palmer and Mrs. Zo Clendenin who keep track of attendance. read the daily announcements. print the schedule booklets. sell school materials, and work long hours to extend various services to the students and the public. The high school hired a new librarian, Mrs. Duffy. Mrs. Duffy worked in the library on Mon- days, Wednesdays and Fridays. This freed Miss Spratt, who had been with the Riverdale school district in years past. to assume her other responsibilities as unit librarian on those days. But Mrs. Spratt was at the high school on Tuesdays and Thurs- days. Both Mrs. Duffy and Miss Spratt were capably assisted by Mrs. DeCap. In the other major develop- ment, Mrs. VanDeVoorde took over as the head cook in the mid- dle of the school year. Under her leadership, the quality of the hot lunches made a marked turn for the better and they, as a result. became more popular. The daytime janitor was Mor- ris Bonds. He received a lot of help from kids in the S.W.E.P. program. Other janitors were Joyce Smith and Patricia Ceurvorst. while Bill Nicholson was the building maintenance supervisor. The head of the transportation department was Iona Wigant. and the head bus mechanic was Dan Kennedy. 'OC K9 TOP: Judy Creen. Karen Shrum. Kath- erine Hansen. Lorena Logdson. It is reading the works of famous authors in British Lit. or American Lit. It's playing the part of a reporter and capturing events for the school newspaper, or putting all the events of the year together and laying out a book for the Yearbook class. During the 1977-78 school year Mrs. Knight, head of the English department, was given a grant to fly to Washington D.C. for one week with the Close-Up program. You see many different kinds, from the ten dollar kind to the most expensive ones. The calculators are used because in order to use them you still have to know the formula. In the Math department at Riverdale there were three instructors, Mr. Parker who taught Algebra and Math II, Mr. Oltman who taught Pre. Algebra, Geometry, and Senior Math, and Mrs. Tadlock who taught Metrics and Trigonometry. Mrs. Tadlock was badly missed during her two week stay at the hospital. A variety of substitutes led to mixed-up assignments and other bewilderments. TOP LEFT: Mr. Oltman. TOP RIGHT: Mrs. Tadlock and Denise Anderson. BOTTOM RIGHT: Sue Feddersen, Mr. Parker and Jill Bump. FROMA IMALS TOCHEMICALS Uri? ,,,, I I ' Anja, ' ' One of the new additions to the Riverdale faculty this year is Mr. Krahe. He can usually be found in the biology room amongst all the living plants and animals. C3 gerbils, 3 salamanders, 2 mice, 56 swordtails, l neon, 4 alge eaters, 12 minnows, 9 dozen snails, and l crayfishj that were brought in by the students. Mr. Krahe said that he used these surroundings to create a fun place to learn, so that the students would want to come to class. Mr. Mills, who can be found in the chemistry room, amongst all his chemicals, calculators, and experimental apparatus is always busy with a student or doing something for his upcoming Chemistry, Physics, or General Science classes. E. department went fairly well, considering some of the confusion of teachers switchingjobs. Mr. Campbell left Riverdale for another job towards the end of lst quarter. Mr. Carbee started full-time to take over Campbell's P. E. classes and Mr. Nelson took Campbellss Health classes while still teaching his regular P. E. classes and his Human Growth and Development classes. Because Mr. Carbee started full-time Mrs. Figgins was hired to take his place, working half the day at the high school and half the day at the elementary school. TOP: Coach Carbee. Mr. Stenzel was welcomed by our two returning Social Studies teachers. Mr. Lancaster and Mr. Watson. Survey of American History has been added to Mr. Lancaster's schedule. It has proved to be a popular class with both teacher and students. Sociology. taught by Mr. Watson, is also a well-liked class. Its aim is to help students toward a better understanding of their personalities and behavior. A new shop facility and greenhouse are to be located on the Southwest wing of the school. by the bus garage. The cost is approximately 2.000 dollars. Mr. Boeck. the new Ag. instructor feels this facility will provide the students with experience. something that a textbook could not. There is a growing amount of interest in the field of gardening. Mr. Boeck has taught Ag. in two schools before coming to Riverdale. He enjoys teaching here because he gets along well with both the teachers and the students. He has improved the Ag. program by adding an independent study and a Farm Maintenance course. The number of students in these and other courses have increased a lot since last year. The students feel these changes are helping to increase their knowledge in many fields and respond with comments like. He know what he is talking about. Lack of a previous summers Drivers Education course and an overload of students taking Drivers Education put Mr. Wayne Brinkmeier in a spot. Nonetheless a solution was found. Mr. Rodney Scott. a WA TED: MORE DRIVERS ED TEA CH ERS student teacher. helped Mr. Brinkmeier teach students to drive and Mr. Joe Bell. the Industrial Arts teacher. drove with students after school. Mr. Campbell left this year so Mr. Nelson taught his health class. The class is required for the sophomores. Health deals with drugs. good health. alcohol and sex diseases. Consumer Ed. was taught by Mrs. Kertz. The class gave the students practical knowledge for their adult lives. u-u- IN TERRELA TED STUDENTS GET TO WORK During the day interrelated students work atjobs outside of the school. They get paid and credit toward graduation. They also get on-the-job experience which they hope will help them later in life with otherjobs. Mrs. Kertz took over the interrelated class this year. lt was herjob to supervise the students work experience, maintain a good relationship between the school and the employees as well as to conduct the classroom sessions. The students try to findjobs that are related to what they hope will be future employment. Twenty-five students were involved in the Interrelated program as of the end of this year. Times are changing and so is the Riverdale Choir Program. This year's choir had the privilege of having a textbook. This textbook taught the students how to read and understand music. The program also provides a quarter class of vocal theory. This class teaches a student how to sing and the techniques needed for correct singing. This class is based on an individual basis with the class limit of approximatly I5 students. Both faculty and students were able to bring in radios, televisions, and cars in hopes that one of the classes could make the minor adjustments and repairs needed. The two identical boys are an unique combination of intelli- gence and wit. Both John and Doug are involved in Band and Outdoor Club, but their interests vary greatly when it comes to hobbies and music. John enjoys war games and hard rock, while Doug likes old radio shows and swing music. School is important to the Mose twins. Their grades range from mostly A's to an occasional B. Both boys intend to further their education by attending college. Doug plans on being an ortho- dontist, but John, being the com- plete opposite, wants to enter the lt. PROFILES space Engineering Field. Doug and John get along well together, but consider themselves brothers, not twins. Teachers who have the twins together in class have mixed com- ments about them. One teacher says, I have to admit they are individualsll' Another was heard saying, The only problem is keeping them quiet. While the boys are very bright, at the same time they can be outspoken and disrupt the class with their out- landish jokes. Students see the twins as a way to keep the class interesting. Even a dull class can be made fun if the Mose twins are in it. Of course, many times John and Doug ruin the curve with their good grades. EW ADVISOR SPURS FFA The Riverdale FFA chapter members participated in state and national conventions, farm progress shows, and judging contests where members were graded for prowess in judging things like horses and soil. This year, the Riverdale chapter had a new advisor, Mr. Dennis Boeck. Mr. Boeck was responsible for many of the improvements in the chapter. The school had an FFA week, celebrating the national organizations 50th anniversary. During the week there was an FFA assembly in which members gave speeches regarding the origin and function of the FFA. The FFA also had a program where they took animals to the grade school and answered the children's questions about them. 70 ., A . . ,i Q ff ,.lfaWr,,, ., TOP: Mike Nelson, Matt DeCap, Ron Willhite, Scott DeBlieck, Ed Randall, Doug Zumaris, Lynn Plumb, Brad Allison, Lori Lampo, Greg Scheff. PLA YIT AGAI , ARTIE The fall play f'House of Blue Leaves was about Artie Shaughnessy fDavid Franksj, a would be songwriter who has his hopes encouraged by his mistress Bunny Flingus CKelly Nortonj. During the pope's first visit to New York, Bunny Flingus talks Arnie into calling on an old chum, Billy Einhorn fDan Michaelsj now a Hollywood producer, to get a job writing music for films. At about the same time, his son, Ronnie Shaughnessy fMike Lanej, returns home AWOL from Fort Dix planning to blow up the pope at Yankee Stadium. The play was directed by Mr. Whit Anderson. This year a few new things were added, first the play was extended to three nights. A new, less expensive, background, muslin, was found to be very successful. And, finally, a new light board has been ordered. Unfortnately it didn't arrive soon enough to escape a few problems the play incurred. The story started with Sky Masterson, a big time gambler who made a bet with Nathan Detroit, a poor gambler, that Sky couldn't get Sarah Brown, leader of the Save-A-Soul Mission, to fly to Havanna, Cuba with him. Meanwhile, Nathan was having problems with his sweetheart, Miss Adelaide, a dancer who wanted to get married after fourteen years of engagement. Sky Masterson made a deal with Sarah Brown. He would present twenty-four sinners to her mission if she would fly to Havanna with him. The musical ends on a happy note with multiple marriages. The extension of performances from three to four gave the students an extra day to show off their talents. This musical was also the first to try out the new light system. There were a few casualties over the four performances, ranging from Chuck Marshall's bloody nose to Ed, who had to use a cane after hurting his leg in a make- believe fight. Some improvising and quick thinking was needed when the manhole cover was forgotten during one night and when Cheryl threw the coconut at the audience. The cast had control of the play and covered mistakes before the audience noticed them. TOP: Ed Randall. They had a goal of 40 pints of bloodbut they passed the goal easily and had to turn people away who wanted to donate. Mr. Michel, who replaced Mr. Robinson, was their new sponsor for the year. The Assemblies which the stu- dent council gave consisted of one movie, The Sting, and some acrobats, which the student body really enjoyed. They also had some new ideas for homecoming which was the powder puff derby and a dummy hunt. During Christmas their assem- bly had a banana eating contest which was won by Gary Fincher for the Senior class. The bubble blowing contest was won by Wayne Leffel for the Junior class and the gong show was won by the Sophomore class. The volleyball banquet proved that. It was a time for remembering the past season and recalling all of the unusual events. At the banquet, everyone's appetite was satisfied when the eating began. Coach Brinkmeier and the team set several goals before the season: to have the team average 39 and to win every tournament they were in. They nearly accomplished their goals. They set every course record except for two. The team average was around 40g and they won the Freeport Tournament. Three girls went out for golf and competed in a dual match for the first time in R.H.S. history. They were Bev Maharry, Robyn Young, and Alair Walgrave. 96 fl ii A0 K . ik -f Qi . 4 VW 'Z 9 . f V ..... t' Q E . ' ' Q ft 9 ttf - ,M ,-get . .t.' ., f ., . . 7 . . .4 ,IN A PM fn-. The Rams got their setbacks out of the way early, as they eamed a 7-l-l record. Riverdale lost I4-0 to' Rockridge on opening night, then tied Savanna 6-6 in the third week. From there on, Riverdale had few problems handling anybody. The Riverdale sophomores allowed a mere five touchdowns over their remaining six ball games, devasting five of those opponents. Riverdale finished the conference season with six wins and one tie, against no losses. The Rams crunched Fulton 26- 6 then beat Erie 18-8 a week later. They then registered two consecutive shut-outs, clubbing Newman 14-0 and Amboy 20-0. The next week they beat Prophetstown 22-6. They finished their season by coming from behind to edge past Morrison l6-l3. It was only the second game all season that the Rams allowed more than one touchdown. As well as being tough on defense, the Rams were a good offense club. FROSH-SOPH SCORES R.H.S. OPP. The Rams lost their first game of the year, 26-12 at Rockridge. and it became increasingly difficult for them to win. The Rams outgained their opposition in almost every game, but they were plagued with mistakes almost every time they came close to scoring. The Rams led Sherrard 7-0 much of the way, but Sherrard scored a touchdown and a two- point conversion near the end of the game. Riverdale lost to Fulton, 6-0 in overtime, in a game in which they held the defending state champs scoreless for four quarters. They finally won their last game, 9-0 over Morrison. MX xxx f A if? hh?- mu HOMECOMING IS NOTA COMPLETE There was more excitement in this years homecoming activities. thanks to the addition of two events. The dummy hunt, involved listening to the morning announcements for the clues to find it. On the third clue, senior girls found the dummy at the Port Byron Bandstand. At the bonfire, they dumped the dummy at the edge of the fire. The other addition involved the unusual sight of girls playing football. This game was called the Powder Puff Derby and involved the Freshman-Sophomore girls playing against the Junior-Senior girls. The overpowering Junior- Senior team won with the score of I4-0. The Friday afternoon parade featured clowns with candy, horsemen, the band, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, the Homecoming attendents, and of course, the floats. Friday night came and it was a disastrous moment as the Rams added another loss to their record. The Amboy Clippers sailed past the Rams with a score of 20-7. At the half-time Denise Anderson was crowned the queen and Roger Nickerson was crowned king. Homecoming ended with the Saturday Night Dance. The students danced and listened as the Brass Tax played. All in all homecoming was another memorable event. TOP LEFT: Coach Nelson. Bill Peterson. Duane Ewing. MIDDLE LEFT: Left tfront to backll Vicki Brooks. Terri Creen.
