XS 'fun ,aillfw 1 nl, 97 A Dream Come True As Riverdale's 21st year as a unit school district closed, a long desired goal was about to come true. Construction of the new elementary addition, to house pupils in grades 3 through 6, commenced in mid-July, 1976, and continued on schedule, thus permitting the closing of the Dis- trict's four small, outlying ele- mentary buildings in June, 1977, and the housing, for the first time of all elementary pupils in the Riverdale District at one cen- tral site. The new addition, containing 21 classrooms, an elementary office, vocal music room, a multi-purpose room and stage along with the renovation of the Coe building basement cost about 351.4 million, with the state of Illinois participating with a direct grant equalling nearly 60070 of the costs and the local taxpay- ers, through an approval of a bond referendum in September, 1975 providing the remaining 40070. Dedication of the new facility is scheduled for early September in 1977. He will be moving over to Coe to be an advisor, a new teacher will be hired to only teach his classes. There was an assortment of classes in the Agriculture Dept. last year from Ag. Chemicals and Fertilizer to Animal Science to Ag Business and Management. In order for anybody to get into the class they had to take Intro. to Ag. This year the Agriculture Department will offer Ornamen- tal Horticulture and Horse Sci- ence for all the horse lovers. The Interrelated class was just as big or bigger as in past years. There was a variety of kids and jobs in the class. Too bad this class can't be offered two times during the day because of the size of the class but unfortunately they had to have other Ag classes. Students Practice Skzlls The United Township Area Vocational Center began the second semester of the 1967-68 school year. lt started with five schools and 275 students attending, now there are eleven schools and 800 students in attendance. The Center is providing education and training in twenty-two areas which will enable the students to enter the labor market with a definite skill. Vocational or career education is a valuable part of the total educational program. The center has also added a new class this year, it is called Practical Nursing. Art was fun, frustrating, relaxing, and rewarding for many students this year. Mr. John Tadlock taught students to express themselves in many waysq by processing film for film production, working with clay in three dimensional art, drawing and painting their ideas in two dimensional art, or working independently in advanced art. M ath Brings umbers T0 Students The 1976-'77 Math Department had three instructors teaching nine different subjects. Mr. Parker taught three sections of students in each of two classes, Math I and Algebra I. Math II, Pre-Algebra, two sections of Geometry, and Senior Math were the subjects taught by Mr. Oltman. Miss Strunk had the task of teaching the Metrics System and two sections each of Algebra II Cfirst semesterj and Trigonometry Csecond semesterb. She also conducted two sections of Accounting, a business course. Students in band this year received a full academic credit for band, so Mr. Hughes and the band council were active in preparing a new curriculum, handbook and constitution for band members. The more active band council was established to spark student involvement. Throughout the summer and the school year, the band participated in many activities. During the summer, the band played in Bicentennial Parades in Hillsdale, Cordova and Port Byron. By late summer, the band was busy preparing to march in football half-time shows. All through the year, the band was present at athletic events including pep assemblies, basketball games and wrestling meets to help build school spirit. The pep band also made a special appearance at Rockford College to honor Ted Frits. The rest of the bands' time was spent in preparing for their fine Christmas and Pops concerts, the two music contests, pit band rehearsal for the spring musical Li'1 Abner, and finally playing for Class Night and Graduation. Mr. Hughes was also busy with the Pom Pon squad who added color to many of the band's performances . ,af lu- .. - ve-f ' W I. I , i g V p . .Q 7 J -Lxf IA 0 d , . ,H 4 1...-. -Q, 1 G! The course, which is one quarter long, is only open to Juniors and Seniors due to its mature content. Also new to this department was a field trip to Chestnut Mountain in Galena. Coach Nelson commented that, Early injuries and long touch- down plays were the Rams' down- fall. The Rams played compe- titive football all season. Each game was close until the final minutes except for Morrison and the state champs, Fulton. It was pretty easy for the team to lose their morale, but they never gave up through the whole sea- son. All in all, the football players had a fun time and that is what sports are for. Chris Hohenboken and Kirk Wainwright were named to the All Conference tearn. Kirk was named to the second All Western Illinois team and Chris got Hon- orable Mention. At the football banquet Chris was named MVP, Best Offense and Honorary Cap- tain. Kirk was named our Best Blocker, and Dave Johnson was also named an Honorary Captain. Charlie Kline, our leading tack- ler, was named Best Defense, Bill McCorkle was named Most Improved and Rich Mabeus won the Newman 110070 Award. All of the awards were picked by the players. The outlook for next season is very promising and the Rams have 7 returning letterman and the powerful sophomores who won the conference this year. They had the mak- ings for a very good season but couldn't really get it together. Inconsistency throughout the sea- son was definitely their problem. lt was a frustrating season for the whole team, many nights they could have easily said, Why should we go to practice? But everybody still showed up and tried harder and harder to improve the team. It was paying off at the end because they were playing their best ball at the end of the season. Q The 1976-77 Riverdale Golf team had a few problems this season, as they finished with an 8-7 record. The varsity team started out very well, winning four out of their first five matches. The only loss came by way of Cambridge by a losing score of 165-168 . After that the Rams started their downfall. They lost their next three matches and lost five out of 6 in all. The Junior Varsity team got off to a great start winning their first six matches. Then after the fresh-soph tournament which the F-S took 3rd in, the J -V lost the next five out of nine matches. Several records were broken this year by the team and by one individual. Randy Mumma broke school records at six different courses. They were at Byron Hills 35, Rock River in Rock Falls 37 , Lake Erie Country Club 36, and 73 respectively. He also broke the school record for low average which used to be 38.9, and now is 38 . 4. The Rams as a team set two school records. One of them was a 219 at the Rock River Country club and the other one was a 203 at Byron Hills. Li 'I The 1976-'77 musical was Li'l Abner directed by Mr. Dale Morgan. This year's musical was about a worthless small town called Dogpatch that was going to be bombed the day before an annual Sadie Hawkins Day Race, if nothing necessary about the town could be found. Abner Yokum saves the town with his Yokum Berry Tonic until the scientists report the tonic is a failure. As they walked away from their town a plaque fell out of the statue of General Iubilation T . Cornpone and they discovered the statue was a national shrine and the town was saved. Thanks to the band , cast, crews, and Dale the play was a success. QED DEE SU 1.
