This year the students had a chance to voice their opinion on the school board. One Junior and one Senior were chosen. Mr. Grady, Mrs. Dorothy Palmer and Mrs. Zoe Clendenen keep the office running smoothly with help from Jane Crayton, Diane Smith, Su Jackson, Theresa Donder, Sue McGeehon, Rhonda Nightengale, and Machel Ballard . Ms. Rhea Werts and Mr. Jim Bodine have their hands full with scheduling problems, arranging scholarships and college plans, and suggesting career opportuni- ties. All it needs is black birds. Home Ec 9 Mr. Be1l's talents were spread out in many different courses. He taught such diversified subjects as metals, two electronics and two electricity classes, drafting, auto mechanics, and three power mechanics classes. Another first this year was the number of girls enrolled in I.A . classes. This year five girls were enrolled in electricity and seven girls in power mechanics. mfxngg, J Industrial Arts - 10 Y-uf ,. A J , I Z 5 1,914-,fx W Al Davis, our illustrious art teacher, once again succeeded in enlightening the Riverdale stu- dents with sculpture, ceramics, painting, and jewelry making, just to name a few. Mr. Davis took a leave of absence at the semester. Mr. John Tadlock of Clinton, Iowa replaced him with plans basi- cally to keep the same schedule. 3-D classes did sculpturing, ceramics, and jewelry making. Photography made an animated movie and Drawing classes did some painting and printing. Business Business this year was taught by two teachers one who was new to the Riverdale Faculty. Miss Freece, our new business teacher, taught Typing and Office Practice. Mrs. Thode, our other business instructor taught Shorthand and Introduction to Business . ffm., mm Q . Sharing these duties were Miss Strunk, Mr. Parker, and Mr. Oltman. A new course was introduced this year explaining the Metric Sys- tem . This course was taught by Miss Strunk. Math- 13 Students with special learning difficulties get help from Mr. Robinson in Riverda1e's learning center. These students contrib- uted much by helping out around the school. The library is a quiet place for students to go to relax or study. In their English classes, students learn to enjoy reading, an essential for learning. English helps a students vocabulary increase. Riverdale High School has four English teachers: Mrs. Grady, the head of the department, Mrs. Knight, Mrs. Lenski and Mrs. Kindschuh. Mrs. Grady teaches Individual- ized Reading, Composition, Standard English, Creative Writ- ing, General English 9 , and Brit- ish Literature. Mrs. Knight teaches American Literature, English 10, Compos- ition, lournalism and quarter courses. Mrs. Lenski teaches General English 10, Mythology, Wild West, Sports Literature and Cycles of Life. Mrs. Kindschuh teaches Eng- lish 9 , Science Fiction, Bible Literature, Human Struggle with Good and Evil and Yearbook. M, f'31aW 5 Z 1 I L REWARD I L5 1 g awtsfstw tg tg- English-15 Screws, Despite a few mutilated cats and some accidental hydrogen explosions and several exasperat ing experiments, the classes went well and teachers and stu- dents survived . Science teaching duties were shared by three teachers this year. Mr. Kinkead taught Advanced Biology and Biology. Mr. Mills taught General Sci- ence, Chemistry, Physics and Advanced Physics. Mr. Oltman taught General Science. Dfdvwds Mr. Brinkmeier kept his Driv er's Ed . students in hand by expressing the importance of courteous and safe driving. The boys are very helpful in teaching the girls the techniques of the co-ed sports this year. They have more time to perfect each sport since classes have changed to five days a week. We now have many more courses to choose from such as: Weight training, water safety, jazz dancing and outdoor educa- tion . .AS- P.E Riverdale's History Department has three teachers. Mr. Watson teaches Federal Constitution, Population Problems , Sociology , Civil War, Current Affairs, Life Span, Comparative Social Sys- tems, Political Parties, and Law Enforcement. Mr. Michel teaches Current Affairs, Illinois History, Life Span, Colonialism and the American Revolution, 20's and 3O's, Psychology, Mid- dle East, Modern Europe, and Working Man in America . And Mr. Lancaster instructs Practical Law, History of the American West, History of Music, Far East, Urban Affairs, New Model Me , Criminal Law, and Ancient Civ- ilization. Social Studies - 20 cw-mum, Registration for students means signing up for classes you want, need, or have to take because it's the only one open. It also means frustration, total schedul- ing chaos, and only a couple hours of school! For teachers, however, it's a long hard day filled with stu- dents' scheduling problems, con- fusion, and their ever faithful coffee cup. Registration 21 Y! 11 This year's Drama Depart- ment, directed by Gloria Thode , presented Neil Simon's play, Plaza Suite , as its fall pro- duction. Plaza Suite is a comedy set in a hotel room in New York City . It is written as three one act plays, each one completely dif- ferent than the others. Act I is about a businessman and his wife on their 28rd or 24th wedding anniversary. Act Il depicts a small town boy who hits it big in Hollywood, then returns to see his old high school sweetheart. Thanks to the play crews, the audience and least to say the cast, the play was a success. Plays agp, agp, Bmw ' The 1975-76 musical was Bye Bye Birdie directed by Mr. Dale Morgan. Thanks to the band , cast and Dale, the play was a success. The night started out with a welcome speech made by the Jr. Class president, Kim Parien. The theme was Dream Weaver . Everyone danced to the music of the Dukes and Duchess of Rhythm . When the dance was over, every- one changed clothes and headed to Sam's Bowling Alley where the Jun- ior Parents provided a fun time of bowling, foosball, pinball, pool, pop, and pizza. On Sunday morning everyone got up bright and early and headed for the picnic spot of their choice for a day of fun and relaxation in the sun. Then the student body has to guess the mystery students. Also, Student Council made flowers so the students could buy them for their friends. Messengers deliver the flowers and recipients may pay 10:15 to discover their admirer. Thursday was supposed to be game day, but bad weather hind- ered the outside activities. Friday was slave day and the famous auction. John Dergo took the place of Red Landuit as the auctioneer. John auctioned off whipped cream pies, slaves and a few donated items. Awards 31 Ngh 32 Passing ' Following the awards Annette Riewerts gave the presentation of the class gift. The class of 1976 gave the school two flood lights to put on the Marty Nitz Memo- rial Marquee. Then Annette passed on the torch of knowledge to Ann Morthland who is the president of the class of 1980 . After the torch of knowledge Bill Lane , the student council president, traded flags with Pet- ros Zagliverinos. Petros is this year's AFS student. ' A X R 5 5 g To become members of the A , PT' ii A National Honor Society students must possess and exhibit scholar- g ship, leadership, knowledge, service, and character through- out their years in high school. The students are chosen by the teachers, based on their score for the five characteristics. This year 10 seniors and 15 juniors were chosen as members. After the induction family and friends of the inductees enjoyed punch and cookies served by the present members of NHS. The inductees were presented with corsages and boutonnieres . They were a beautiful sight in their red , white , and blue gowns. The invocation and Bene- diction was given by Rev. David Peterson. Andy Boling, the Salu- tatorian gave his Senior address. Then the Valedictorian, Brian Plumb , introduced his cousin , Charlie Plumb, the author of I'M NO HERO. Everyone tried to hold back tears as they watched the Seniors Recession. Activities such as the Christ- mas Concert, Pops concert, and Contest meant extra work, less yelling and more throat lozenges for the students involved . Mr. Morgan commented that Girls Glee has grown this year with many new voices. Music 39 JZHQBQML The 1975-'76 Riverdale High School Band, under the direction of Charles Hughes, had one of its busiest years ever. Concerts, Contests, and marching in parades made up much of the band's busy schedule . One of the most welcome activities of the year was the Pep band's great entertainment dur- ing the basketball games and wrestling meets. The fans and the team wish to express their sincere thanks to Mr. Hughes and the Band. The overall record for the season was 5-4, but the conference record was much more impressive with five wins and only two losses. The boys always put out a lot of effort, and their record shows that they worked very hard. He participated in football, track, and wrestling in high school, and during his college days at the University of Northern Iowa, he also played football. The Riverdale Rams gave everyone a boost of spirit as they won the first Homecoming foot- ball game in six years in a 40-O decision. Helping the team keep the spirit going were the 195 Varsity Football Cheerleaders: Diane Ditto, Su Jackson, Cindy Reimers, Mary Ann Stockwell, and Trena Young. Homecoming 55 H The theme for the 1975 Home- coming was American Folk- lore . The activities began Thursday night with the bonfire and pep rally, which generated a lot of spirit and also a little com- petition as each class attempted to build a pyramid on the foot- ball field. The spirit continued Friday throughout the parade and onto the Victorious football game . During half -time of the Varsity game, the 1975 Homecoming King and Queen were announced . They were Denise Cole and Tom Anderson. The other Senior attendants were Su Jackson and Kevin Kennedy, Sue Ziegler and Mike Loy. Riverdale was ranked as high as 4th in the Class A poll. The season itself provided five first place trophies for the Ram trophy case. These included championships in both the Orion and Wethersfield Holiday Tour- naments. The Rams claimed their third consecutive confer- ence championship as they were crowned the first Three Rivers Basketball Champions. In state tournament competition the Rams earned their second con- secutive Regional and Sectional Championships. The Riverdale season ended in an exciting Super-Sectional game at Rock Island , losing to Rova 58-52 . Rova lost in the state champion- ship game to Mt. Pulaski 59-58. This particular Riverdale team was without a doubt as good as any Class A Basketball team in the state of Illinois. Mark Foster, a three year varsity player, enjoyed his greatest sea- son. Ted Frits, a three year starter, ended a brilliant career including a school record 220 assists and the career assist record of 410. Kevin Kenady played in 84 consecutive varsity games as a three year starter. Kevin scored 1,060 points in his career and had 672 rebounds. His brilliant career helped produce 73 Ram victories in those three years. For the sixth straight year the Rams set an attendance record for ath- letic events. The dedication of the players and support and enthusiasm of the fans made this Riverdale season a truly memora- ble year for Riverdale High School. The cake was baked and donated by Alan Nitz . After a delicious meal awards were given out to certain mem- bers of the team who showed out- standing achievement during the year. Almost all the school records were broken. The girls did well in tournaments by placing third in the Erie Invita- tional, Newman Invitational and conference. The Dual meet record was 2-1, and they placed second at the Erie Triangular. Riverdale had a new first in the girls track field . Although the team's record of 3- 11 wasn't outstanding , many individual records were broken. Setting records for the Varsity team were Mark Foster in the Triple Jump, Marty Hurry in the 220 yard dash, and the 440 yard relay team consisting of Marty Hurry, Mark Foster, Vince Volk, and Perry Larson . Ted Frits, our two mile run- ner, advanced to the State Finals. The underclassmen are now getting the experience the team lacked this year and can expect a more successful team next year. There were many special awards given to people in Girl's track, Boy's track , Golf , Cheerleading , GAA, Matmaids, and Volley- ball. Then Ms. Werts joined Mrs. Kertz , and they gave out the cheerleading awards. Mary Ann Stockwell received a special award for cheering two sports a year for three years and elected for a seventh time . Next came Miss Strunk with the Volleyball awards. They went to: Best Spiker: Denise Anderson Most Valuable: Lori Wain- wright Most Improved: Diana Ditto Best Server: Becky Roeglin 110070: Cindy Jackson After Volleyball came Girl's Track with Coach Dave Nelson and Miss Strunk. Q. es-ou, The Riverdale golf team for 1976 got off to a slow start win- ning only 2 of their first 9 matches. Playing many younger golfers the inexperienced Rams reeled off 4 straight dual meet victories to conclude their season at 6 wins and 7 losses. IV golfers were 4 and 6 . The Rams placed third in the Rockridge Tourney and third in the Three Rivers Conference meet. I V golfers won the Rockridge Tourney . There were some outstanding individual performances this year. Randy Mumma, a sopho- more, led the team averaging 39 . 9 strokes per round , and he had the year's low score, a 36. Randy also placed third at Rock- ridge, second at Erie, and fourth in the Conference Tournament. Randy was selected Most Valua- ble Golfer. Senior Andy Boling was second place Conference medalist and second medalist at the Cam- bridge Tournament. Andy was elected Captain of the Team.
