Deo We, the Senior Class of 1965 in our four years at Riverdale Senior High School, have come to know and appreciate our principal, Mr. Joseph Deines. We cannot say that all of our encounters were enjoy- able, such as those concerning short skirts and beltless pants, but even when there was a conflict of opinions we knew he was still a friend acting in the best interests of our future. His tireless efforts during the past six years have made our high school an institution of which we are proud. It is because of these qualities and others that we dedicate the 1966 Rambler to you, Mr. Deines. --The 1966 Rambler staff ation Table of Contents Dedication .................... Arthur Donnelly Superintendent The Class of 1966 will remember many events through their Four years. None will have as much overall impact as the day :he people of the district voted 412 to 199 to build a new high :chool at the Coe site. The Class of 1967 will see construction under way. The '68 :lass should be the first to graduate from the new building. The .969 class will, no doubt, be the first to have spent at least one 'ull year in the new structure. The new building will help you look toward more promising aducational opportunities. At this time many of you will not ,ind employment in Rock Island County. However, I believe the pay will be forthcoming when your younger brothers and sisters vill find employment in our area, upper Rock Island County. l There are many Frontiers open to young men and women ivho will learn, , and apply themselves. Will you be the 'Drop-Out or the student who will Drop-In to see his former ieachers to say I fought the 'Poverty War' by study and hard vork. Good Luck Seniors. Opportunity is there. L.A. Dussliere, Superintendent Principal Class of 1966- To you who are graduating I have this to say. Our four years Jf association in high school have at times been arduous, at :ther times tedious, but more often inspiring and rewarding. We iave assigned your lessons, read your papers, directed your dis- zussions, checked your problems, corrected your grammar, en- oyed your stories, listened to your recitations and observed four behavior in and out of the classrooms. We have not been able to answer all your questions. We iave guided you through established lessons from the stored wisdom of modern civilization. It is our hope that what we iave given you will help you to live wisely, serve ably and lead successfully in your time. I am proud to have been your prin- zipal. LM. Miss Fisher was the Drama Club sponsor this year, and officers chosen last year were: Andrea Siwy, Presidentg Cathy Long, Vice-President, Sandra Heiney, Secretaryg and Tom Durbin Treasurer. In addition to attending the club's monthly meetings, members were encouraged to participate in and work on the all-school plays, and attend plays outside of school. 57 1 Future Nurses Association Row lf David Allen, Sec.g Dale Bridge, Pres., David Webber. Riverda1e's Lois Prater Chapter of Future Teachers of America is one of the school's most active organ- izations. In addition to sponsoring candy sales at the school plays, members earned money toward their annual 3100 scholarship by holding two carwashes and the Winter Whirl in February. Highlighting the club's activities were the ratification of a constitution, the showing of educational films, a speaker of special ed- ication, and a field trip to the Dixon State School. Seven senior F. T. A. members spent one day each week 'or 6 weeks cadet teaching at either Coe or the Junior Eligh School. As a climax to the busy year, delegates 1ttended the annual I. A. F. T. A. convention on April ,5 and 16 at Rock Island High School. Tim Bridge, :resident of the Blackhawk Division F. T. The Yearbook staff accepted their positions with enthusiasm and determination. Optimism grew as layouts materialized, copy sheets grew, and pictures fitted in. The content of the book seems to be of high quality because there is a sensible balance between the serious and the light. The book is a clear, vivid report of this year's happenings. I particularly com- mend the layouts and organization of the book. The Yearbook was assembled by a staff led by editor Tim Bridge and co-editor Teresa Berfield. I am very proud of this year's staff and hope I am fortunate enough to have similar staffs in the future. A. But more im- portant than winning those last two games, was the fact that they acquired a winning attitude. I hope that these sophomores carry this attitude into varsity foot- ball and give us a winning team on the varsity level, which they are capable of. This record, however, does not express the true quality of the Rams' team in its spirit, desire, and love of football. The team showed outstanding indi- vidual and team efforts and, despite the defeats, gave the school a foot- ball squad to be proud of. One of the outstanding team games was the one in which the Rams beat the DeWitt Sabers for the first.time in Riverdale's history. Another noteworthy achievement was made by John Cronin at the New London game. John set a new school record by carrying the ball 197 yards in one game. The outstanding ability of the players can be seen in the All-lllowa Conference selections, The Rams had three players on the first team: Rick Heist at end, Mike Deines in the backfield, and lim VandeVoorde at center. Bob Pettit made the second team as a guard, and lim Stewart received honorable mention at the same position, The Riverdale team also led the area in placing two players, Mike Deines and Jim VandeVoorde, on the first team All-Western Illinois and Rick Heist on the second team. These were the players who received special recognition, but it was the entire team's effort, spirit, and work that put them there. This year's fresh-soph basketball squad was a very gratifying one to the coach. They were a fine group of boys with a strong will to win and a great deal of ability. The most outstanding quality of this squad was' the value they placed on team-work' and defense. Particularly strong in these areas were Wayne Oney, Greg Lambrecht, and Louis Reiling, all of whom contributed a great deal to the team. Tom De Cook was our leader all year in scoring and rebounding. His 381 points gave him a 20 point av- erage and he also averaged almost 16 rebounds a game. Greg Lambrecht was our second leading scorer. Howard Tyler, Warren Kincaid, John Ma- thews, and Arlan Cox also contributed a great deal to the team, especially Howard Tyler who was our second leading rebounder. We will hear much from these boys in the next two years. Assisted by Reverend Arthur Donnelly, Robert Miller, Board of Education Presi- dent, presented the graduates with their diplomas. Following the format established three years ago at Riverdale, outstanding students of the graduating class were the featured speakers at this year's commencement. Beverly Wilson, Kathy Zimmerman, and Donna Wainwright chose as their topic the poem Lives, by Henry Reed. Three types of personal lives are exposed in analogies of a field, woods, and stream, and a short speech was delivered on each of them by one of the girls. Q, 'W n as W? A I 4 I S and miles to go before I sleep 4d1fcrfisi14g L l .., l , - fi ll ang dtulenfions. Youlve successfully achieved another goal. Youlre ready to begin reaching for future successes. But . . . how do you measure success? Not with a caliper or a yardstick or a stopwatch . . . not by the acre or the ounce or the cubic foot. Success is intangible . . . it is the sum of your personal goals and aspirations, sorted into positions of relative importance. Whatever you establish as your criteria of success, you will need to exercise self discipline. Ambition alone is not enough . . . even coupled with intelligence and talent. Self discipline is essential to direct your energies and abilities into productive channels . . . to provide you with initiative and perserverance. Develop this quality . . . you will enjoy a more rewarding life, a more successful life. Ambition is just the desire to succeed. The world isfull of ambitious failures-all desire and no discipline. Seb' discipline is perhaps the most important quality an intelligent person can develop in order to reach his goals. From an address by William A. Hewitt, Chairman, Deere Sc Company.
