For it was you as eighth graders who unwittingly but successfully served as my first graduates. Now, it is especially significant to see you graduate. Someone once said that all that stands between the high school graduate and the top of the ladder is the ladder. Each of you has the right to scale that ladder. Climb high, but don't forget the rights of the other climbers. Thom as I. Lonergan Dedicafivu Dear Mr. Lonergan, We would like to thank you for the patience and tireless effort you have given us in the role of both guidance counselor and classroom instructor. Your efforts have guided us when we needed advice, straightened our thinking when we were bewildered, and perhaps most important, helped us find our places in life. We dedicate this yearbook to you in deep gratitude for all the things, great and small, that you have done for us to make our days at Riverdale High School meaningful ones. We ask only that you will remember our class with fond memories throughout the coming years when other students have filled our places. Our best wishes for future happiness and continued success go with this dedication. Great American leaders have sensed this importance of education, but other aspects of American life have been commonly regarded as being more spectatular and rewarding. Every student of American life knows the importance of education. Thomas Jefferson said, lf a nation expects to be ignorant and free in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be. Horace Mann said, If ever there was a cause---if ever there can be a cause worthy to be upheld by all of the toil and sacrifice that the human hand or heart can endure, it is the cause of education. Abraham Lincoln said, I view education as the most important subject we as people can be engaged in. Our late President John F. Kennedy was a staunch supporter of education. His most memorable state- ment, Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country, is an appropriate guide for us all. As a student you can do much for your future and that of our nation by your all-out efforts to learn all you can while you can. I 9 6 4 To The Class of 1964: Four years ago you and I enrolled at Riverdale Senior High School together. Many memorable and edu- cational events and experiences have transpired since that time. l hope you have learned and benefited from all of these, and they will enable you to spend a happier and more fruitful life. Graduation from high school terminates the formal education for some of you. Others have only a good start towards the goals you have established for yourselves. I personally wish each of you the best in your future endeavors. Sincerely, MR. DENNIS CHRISTOPHER Phillips University, B. M. It is a fanfare, heralding an altogether new life in a competitive and demanding adult world. The school has done a big job conditioning young minds for this moment. And, properly, these minds are eagerly receptive to the chal- lenge. But there's more required than a mental reservoir of facts and figures and a willingness to apply them in a practical way. There is another item that is every bit as im- portant or perhaps more so. It is the human heart. For, it must still be acknowledged that it is the heart that can direct these other attributes in such a way as to add to mere material success the quality of satisfaction-a quality that comes from using knowledge and wisdom and skill not only to improve oneself but to make a better world for all who dwell in it. Rightfully, then, it's proper to pause here and ask oneself, '6Whither goest thou?', And then to choose the way that invites this unbeatable part- nership of mind and heart.
