• •n' For yet another year the world lay witness to the increasing tension that plagues this planet and its people. The still unexplained and apparently unpro- voked gunning down of a Korean commercial jet with 267 aboard by the Soviets is a very real example of this. The U.S. in an effort to maintain order in Lebanon lost over 230 marines in a pre-dawn bombing of their post while many of them slept. Back at home Charles Haris managed to hold 2 aides and 5 others hostage on the very course that Preaident Reagan was golfing on, only to release them hours later. There was also a brighter side however. Carl Lewis of the U.S. scored a triple win at the Helsinki World Track Championships in preparation for the Los An- geles Olympics. Ralph Sampson and Eric Dickerson also made their splashing debuts in the sports scene in basketball and football respectively. The Baltimore Orioles won the World Series 4-1 over the Philadel- phia Phillies and catcher Rick Dempsey was named the M.V.P. Football fans also mourned the death of George (Papa Bear) Halas who passed away after an extended illness. Movie goers were also treated to Re- turn of the Jedi , An Officer and a Gentleman , and Flashdance in a year that featured a number of out- standing films. We must look to the future with optimism and a faith that the world and its leaders will achieve a peace that all mankind can live with. 3 i J

Robert L. Anderson was born February 24, 1941 and died September 30,1983; he was our friend, our teacher, and our colleague. Mr. An- derson graduated from Gays Mills High School in 1959 and received his B.S. from La Crosse State College in 1963. He gave the pre- ponderance of his teaching service to our com- munity, teaching at Blue River High School through 1965-67 and at Riverdale High School through 1967-1983. He was active in the River- dale Education Association, serving as presi- dent and for many years as negotiator. Bob will be sorely missed; he will never be forgot- ten by those of us who knew him. It may be unusual to have someone as your teacher and also a good friend, but his is exact- ly what Bob Anderson was to me. He was my teacher for three full years, and 1 enjoyed them all. A highlight was watching Carl Sagan in Cosmos. During class Mr. Anderson was in control, but after class the teacher student boundaries were erased. We talked alot, and Bob enjoyed enticing me. If I would complain or disagree with him, Bob would just give me a big grin and I couldn't help but smile too. His grin and good heart are unforgettable. I was truly fortunate to have Bob Anderson as a teacher and a close friend. Richard Swaziek (former Student) IN LOVING MEMORY OF ROBERT L. ANDERSON 1941-1983 All of us who knew Bob were saddened by his death. I remember him for his warmth and caring, his calmness in stressful situations, his subtle humor, his unique laughter, his broad knowledge, his challenging thinking, his many talents, all the help he gave me through the years. I miss him deeply but I feel grateful to have known and worked with such a fine individual. Helen Krause (Home Ec. instructor) I
