The still unexplained and apparently unpro- voked gunning down of a Korean commercial jet with 267 aboard by the Soviets is a very real example of this. The U.S. in an effort to maintain order in Lebanon lost over 230 marines in a pre-dawn bombing of their post while many of them slept. Back at home Charles Haris managed to hold 2 aides and 5 others hostage on the very course that Preaident Reagan was golfing on, only to release them hours later. There was also a brighter side however. Carl Lewis of the U.S. scored a triple win at the Helsinki World Track Championships in preparation for the Los An- geles Olympics. Ralph Sampson and Eric Dickerson also made their splashing debuts in the sports scene in basketball and football respectively. The Baltimore Orioles won the World Series 4-1 over the Philadel- phia Phillies and catcher Rick Dempsey was named the M.V.P. Football fans also mourned the death of George (Papa Bear) Halas who passed away after an extended illness. Movie goers were also treated to Re- turn of the Jedi , An Officer and a Gentleman , and Flashdance in a year that featured a number of out- standing films. We must look to the future with optimism and a faith that the world and its leaders will achieve a peace that all mankind can live with. 3 i J Robert L. Anderson was born February 24, 1941 and died September 30,1983; he was our friend, our teacher, and our colleague. Mr. An- derson graduated from Gays Mills High School in 1959 and received his B.S. from La Crosse State College in 1963. He gave the pre- ponderance of his teaching service to our com- munity, teaching at Blue River High School through 1965-67 and at Riverdale High School through 1967-1983. He was active in the River- dale Education Association, serving as presi- dent and for many years as negotiator. Bob will be sorely missed; he will never be forgot- ten by those of us who knew him. It may be unusual to have someone as your teacher and also a good friend, but his is exact- ly what Bob Anderson was to me. He was my teacher for three full years, and 1 enjoyed them all. A highlight was watching Carl Sagan in Cosmos. During class Mr. Anderson was in control, but after class the teacher student boundaries were erased. We talked alot, and Bob enjoyed enticing me. If I would complain or disagree with him, Bob would just give me a big grin and I couldn't help but smile too. His grin and good heart are unforgettable. I was truly fortunate to have Bob Anderson as a teacher and a close friend. Richard Swaziek (former Student) IN LOVING MEMORY OF ROBERT L. ANDERSON 1941-1983 All of us who knew Bob were saddened by his death. I remember him for his warmth and caring, his calmness in stressful situations, his subtle humor, his unique laughter, his broad knowledge, his challenging thinking, his many talents, all the help he gave me through the years. I miss him deeply but I feel grateful to have known and worked with such a fine individual. Helen Krause (Home Ec. instructor) I RIVERDALE I have learned what it means R- is for Robert 1- is for the Intellegence of the man V- is for the Vigor and Vitality you displayed E- is for the Effort and Energy you had R- is for the Reverence and Respect you showed D- is for the Diligence of a teacher A- is for the Great Attitude you had L- is for the Love of fellow man you showed E- is for the Everlasting Love we have for you and we miss you If we had a B I know it would stand for Bob and Baseball. Julius G. Ward (Soc. Stud, instr.) Dear Friend Bob, I am glad you passed our way. Few have placed the concern for others so high in life. The community and school have been recipients of your knowledge, willing help, and quiet optimism; but none have benefited more than I. Your willingness to share these qualities with my family and I will be with me always. I could not have wanted for a better friend. Jim Schreck (Soc. Studies instr.) Bob's death has bereft me of both best friend and valued colleague. Three years his senior, I learned as much from him in sharing his dy- ing as in sharing his living. On the weekend before Bob died he told me, 1 see things more clearly now. He has helped me, also, to see more clearly. Larry Godfrey (English instr.) Bob Anderson A- Brilliant and tireless educator A- Loving and caring person A- Man of Christian deeds A- True friend Bob Anderson was all of the above and much more. The 1983 football season opened against the State Divi- sion Champions at Cassville, followed by an impressive victory against Bloomington. The big heart breaker of the year was our loss to Richland Center in the final minutes of the game. The 2-7 record is very misleading as 4 games were lost by one touchdown or less. Tim Victora, Dale Hagen- ston, Matt Gibbons, Bill Mat- thews, and Randy Chitwood were selected all conference special mention. Kurt Pospi- chal and Joe Trumm received honorable mention. We are losing a fine group of seniors, but will have a good nucleus of juniors and sophomores who will return to revenge the close defeats of '83. ■ 1 1 67 1. Their record was 3- 4, but in every game they never lost by over a touchdown. Their final victory over Bos- cobel was by the score of 20-16, after trail- ing 16-0. It was a great victory to show the J.V. improvement because Boscobel had beaten 3 teams we lost to. This year's team posted a 5-7 conference record and a 7- 12 overall record. The team improved their playing per- centages in four out of five categories. They improved serving from 88% to 89%, raised serve reception from 65% to 73%, improved spiking from 75% to 80%, and raised their tipping from 74% to 89%. The highlights of the season were beating Richland Center and Prairie du Chien at home. The onset of the 1983-84 basketball season for the Chieftains saw the implementation of a new style of basketball which requires some major adjustments in individual player funda- mentals, and transition to the fast pace game. The 1983 track season saw our Riverdale boys track team win the River- dale Invit. for the second straight year. Our Chief- tains also placed 3rd in the Bulldog Inv. at Pardeeville. Three boys made it into the 100 pt. club. They were Dale Hagenston with 126 pts., Matt Gibbons 117 % pts., and Matt Harris 102l 4 pts. Dale Hagenston and Matt Gibbons were also named Co-M.V.P. and Mike Gibbons Captain. With 17 of the 22 boys out for track as underclass- men, the track future at Ri- verdale looks bright. Ramsden, S. Hackl, J. Couey, J. Halverson, Coach Kelly, Coach Zander. The 1983 girls track team could best be described as young, since there was only one senior on the squad of 21 girls. Thus, girls track at Riverdale should have a promising future. Highlights of the season were: Cindy Faga becomes the first Ri- verdale athlete to be a conference champion 4 years in a row. Cin- dy won the long jump in the conference meet as well as quali- fying for the state meet for the third straight year. Cindy, was the teams leading scorer with 131 y pts., as she becomes the all-time scoring leader in girls track. Some very talented underclass- men should be able to fill the gaps caused by graduation. Pitching will be the key this sea- son. If Jim Cottrill, Dan Zintz, and Charlie Faga pitch the way they are capable of, this will be a very good year for Riverdale. Row 1: C. Lins, P. Zintz, C. Miller, D. Thiede, S. Tisdale, L. Smith, S. It has held alot of good memories, but there is no turning back. We re about to enter this mad world as the working class. If we could have done something different, I think it would be getting out and living more. Speaking for the Yearbook staff, we would like to thank Mr. Plier for a job well done. This was his first year as the Yearbook Advisor and he did the job like a seasoned pro. Jeff Curtis I'd like to thank all of the staff who helped ease some of the deadline pressures of our Yearbook. It really means alot and I think this book will be great, even though we had a limited staff. I appreciate all the help and I'll leave knowing that I've left behind some good memories. I think our staff this year will be our editors next year. Again, thanks to the staff and go for the gusto next year. Debbi Anne Walsh This year we have produced a unique and outstanding Year- book. We couldn't have accomplished this without a few depend- able people. I would like to thank Korey Knoble and Judy Couey for their efforts, photographers Frank Biba, Jeff Curtis, and Scott Curtis for taking and developing pictures, and Wendell Smith and Lou Coopey for their professional assistance. A special thanks goes to first year Yearbook Advisor Scot Plier. His artwork, photography skills, copytyping and supervision has been wonderful. Underclassmen who are responsible and creative should start making plans now to participate in next year's Yearbook produc- tion. Charise Miller 120 122 123 124
