AFS originated in 1914 to provide the French armies with amubulance assistance. It served the same purpose in World War II, (between the two wars, AFS conducted a graduate fellowship with French universities). But AFS has changed. It is now an organization that sponsors student and teacher exchanges. And al- though it originated in time of war it's purpose is to promote international peace and under- standing.
