On looking back over fhis pasf season, we cannof help feeling fhaf fhe baskefball feam has been successful. Even fhough 'rhe feam's record of seven games won and seven los'I' does nof seem fo indicafe if, Coaches Praff and Drewes have produced a beHer balanced quinfef fhan has played for Riverdale in some fime. Much of fhe feam's success was due fo fhe remarkable playing of Capfain Vic Berni and Earl Mellor, fhe Red and Gray sfar forwards. Mellor was fhe high scorer of fhe feam, his average of fhirfeen poinfs per game showing how deadly a shof he was from all parfs of fhe courf. If was Berni, however, who was 'Ihe more aggressive of fhe fwo, fighfing all fhe way in every game, shining on defense as well as offense and averaging fwelve poinfs per game. The cenfer slof was filled by Bill Bolfon, who played a fine defensive game as well as averaging eighf poinfs on fhe offense. Arf Range and Berf Kiersfead were fhe fwo guards. Range always puf up a 'Fine figh+ in refrieving fhe ball off fhe backboard, while fhe long sef shofs were Ieff fo Kiersfead. Credif musf also be given fo Glenn Degener for his good performance af cenfer as well as af forward. One of fhe finesf vicfories for fhe Praff men was fheir defeaf of Poly Prep, fhis being fhe firsf fime in fhe hisfory of fhe school fhaf fhis frick has been furned. Anofher safisfying vicfory was fheir conquering fhe Scarsdale feam, which usually furns fhe fables on fhe Red and Gray. As we consider our defeafs, fhere is no quesfion fhaf we should have faken Pawling as well as Morrisfown. In fhe Pawling game our guards couIdn'f seem fo gef fhe ball wifhin shoofing disfance. Also, Berni, fhe key man on fhe offense, iniured his hand, hampering his playing and fhus handicapping fhe whole Riverdale affack. Reviewing fhe Morrisfown game, we discover fhaf our feam had encounfered Dwighf iusf fwo days before, and was below par as a resulf of fhaf fedious sfruggle. The League games furned ouf very well as we won all wifh one excepfion, fhe varsify game wifh Hackley. No excuse for fhis defeaf can be offered, however, excepf fhaf Bolfon was absenf, and fhus fhe defense was weakened. Degener deserves much credif for fhe way he played, offen breaking up plays coming fhrough fhe cenfer. In fhe 'Iwo varsify games Berni sfarred, being fhe high poinf maker as well as keeping up fhe feam's spirif. This year's second feam was probably fhe besf fhaf has ever been produced in our school, wifh such capable players as Bob Sfephenson, Phil Waffers, Chuck Sufherland, Rod Kennedy, Charlie Duveen, and Bob Sfewarf. Sfewarf, incidenfally, played fine ball for fhe varsify in fheir final encounfer wifh Lincoln, indicafing 'Ihaf he will probably be a regular nexf year. TENNIS ......... Tennis, in +he las+ lhree or four years, has become one of Riverdale's mos+ successful spor+s. Lasl year's Team had +he highes+ percenlage of any school +eam, and fhis year's squad gave evidence from fhe very s+ar+ +ha+ ii would lurn in a fine record. Three of las+ year's leHer men, Vic Berni, Bill Bolron, and Roland Jacobson, grea+ly bolsfered by fhe newcomers, Ari' Range, John Gooding, and Carey Ellis, formed one of +he linesi balanced reams ever +o represenr Riverdale. The firsf march of 'the year resulled in an easy 6-3 viclory over Pawling. Nexl came fhe march which everyone on +he ream wanied mosl +o win-fhaf wi+h Poly Prep. This fensely foughl march was nor decided unlil fhe lasi doubles encoun+er of +he day. This doubles march was finished in almosi 'roral darkness, Carey Ellis and Roland Jacobson defearing Longman and Mifchell of Poly Prep by a score of 3-6, 6-3, 6-I. Then came +he greal news +ha+ Riverdale had won! This was lhe firsi lime in 'the hisfory of 'rhe school +ha+ a Riverdale Tennis leam had de'Fea+ed Poly Prep. Now, wi+h prospec+s brighl for an unusually successful season, 'rhe feam prac- liced wi+h renewed vigor, wi+h 'lhe resuli' +ha1 if swamped Hopkins Grammar by a score of 6-I. Meeling Trini'ry in 'lhe nexl march, +he 'ream found ilself in an unusual sifuarion. Alfhough a conlraci called for a 3 and 2 ma+ch, lhe coaches of +he respecfive feams agreed beforehand lo play five singles and 'Iwo doubles mafches. On +his basis, Riverdale won 4 +o 3, buf, because of The con+rac+, 'rhe official score was lisled as a 3 +0 2 win 'For Trinily. ln fhe annual A. A. P. S. championships, Riverdale was represen+ed by Vic Berni and Roland Jacobson in +he singles, and Bill Bolron and John Gooding in lhe doubles. Vic Berni reached fhe semi-finals--'rhe furfhesl' 'rha'r a Riverdale enfranf has ever progressed in +he singles. Bill Bollon again reached fhe doubles finals for fhe second successive year, las+ year wilh Vic Berni, +his year wilh John Gooding as his parfner. The mosf difficuli' malch remaining is 'rhal' wifh Horace Mann, bul' 'rhe 'I'eam will go info i'r wi+h a deferminalion +o avenge lasf year's selbaclc. There is no doub+ 'rhaf Mr. Hendriclc's coaching played a greaf par+ in ihe +eam's success, and we hope +ha+ nex+ year's feam will enjoy fhe advanfage of his helpful cri+icism and advice. TRACK....... Under ihe capable iuielage of fhe fwo new 'rrack coaches, Mr. Olson and Mr. Talco'H, a zealous group of speedslers has been coached in+o an exceedingly fine ieam. The loss of lasi' year's slar, Don Kennedy, caused many +o ihink 'thai 'ihis would be a fulile year: however, +he en+husiasm of fhe coaches, coupled wi+h +he appearance of anoiher Kennedy, Roderick, soon made even +he worsi skepiics see lhai fhis could be a good year. For fhe firs+ 'rime in school his+ory a win+er 'irack ieam was formed which prac- ficed and compeied on +he new Drewes Track. This ieam defeaied ManhaHan Prep., 50-24, in a close meeh ihen, weakened by iniuries, ii losi +o Horace Mann, 38-20. Wiih fhis early s+ar+ 'ihe spring ieam worked hard and soon developed inlo excelleni condiiion. A mile relay 'ieam was senr +o Philadelphia for +he Penn Relays, where ihey ran a commendable race againsi superior opponenfs. The Team won iis firsi 'rwo meeis againsi Leake and WaH's and Hopkins Grammar by scores of 5I-44 and 57-38 respec+ively. Then a sirong Scarsdale 'ream defea+ed ihe Red and Gray 58lf2-36V2 in spiie of +he la'Her sweeping ihe disiance races. Excepi for 'ihe field evenis, where Kennedy is +he mainsiay, 'rhe ieam is re- markably well balanced, especially in fhe disfances, where Al Reynolds, Andy Wes+, Burf Kiersiead, and Charlie Wiley hold ihemselves well againsi all rivals. The prospec+s for nexi year are very favorable, since mos+ of ihe leam will refurn. Because of ihe lack of a school pool, aHemp+s +o build up good swimming 'reams in rhe pasf usually proved fulile. Riverdale swimmers used +o be jokingly re- ferred 'ro as +he Poolless Wonders, and nofhing a+ all was expecfed of lhem. This year, rhanks +o +he inreresi and coaching abili+ies of Messrs. Willenbrock and ScoH, The ieam surprised and delighfed 'lhe enrire school. Alihough fhe ream had only fwo oppor+uni+ies a week in which 'lo pracfice, if won 'rwo mee+s decisively. The 'Firsl' of lhese vicrories was recorded a+ +he expense of 'rhe McBurney J. V. Led by versafile Cap+ain Gladding, +he 'leam scored an easy 33-I5 viclory, and rhe school suddenly realized +ha+ i'I' acfually had a swimming leam. Showing lhar Hs firsi' vicfory had noi been a fluke, +he feam +hen proceeded fo swamp Fieldslon, in +he laHer's pool, by a score of 38-23.
