Under advisor, Mr. Wegner, these two staffs are involved in Jour- nalism class. Each month this class will put out The Bridge. Every student must submit an arti- cle to The Bridge. The arti- cles are also a grade for each student. As a class of twenty-three seniors, the class started out with photography. Next we learned about layout of a yearbook. Then the work began ... each student was assigned two pages for the first annual deadline. It is the responsibility of each student to compose their two pages with pictures, captions, and an explana- tion of the club or event they are covering. This year the Annual is expected to be completed by the time we leave school next year, except for the supplement that will cover spring sports and our gradu- ation. This year’s annual should be something ex- traordinary. It will be put together with a lot of care from the seniors of the Class of 1987. Is anyone really sure of what they are doing for the Annual? Even an Editor can color too. 47 1 RVHS Bands Below: Marching Band. Row 1: Jim Connors, Tom Harrah, Chris Peckham, Jason Freel, Clint Puckett. Row 2: Lance Jacoby, Carrie Thompson. Each year, the band begins to practice right away for their first few events. They include: the 4th of July parade in Lone Rock, Plain 3-day celebration the last week of July, and this year the band participated in the “Wild West” days in “Krazo-Mazo- manie!” After the hectic summer events and practices, comes the chaotic football season. At this time the band frantically prepares for each new half-time and pre-game show. In record breaking speed the band suc- cessfully performs on Friday nights ... weather permitting. According to director Mike Krofta, he’s looking for the band to keep progressing in members, sound and attitude. This year we have ap- proximately 90 members with 24 graduating seniors. Next year there will be a “definite increase in size,” says Mr. Krofta. He’s looking forward to this year with alot of enthusiasm. Mr. Krofta has sched- uled guest speakers and soloists to accom- pany the band throughout the year. The band also is expecting to go on tour to one of the various places they have been invit- ed to. However, at this point their destina- tion is unknown. Chris: JAMMIN’-OUT! Varsity Band. Row I: Tammy Mook, Bonnie Nelson. Kim Koller, Nicole Retrum, Julie Doerre, Theresa Werner. This year, under the excellent leadership of Jan Swenson, the River Valley Choirs are looking forward to a great year. Last year, the Festival Choir had a very successful trip to St. Louis, receiving the Best In Class award when competing with choirs from all over the country. Mrs. Swenson feels optomistic about this years group. “The Festival Choir lost a lot of seniors, but this year we sound better than ever.” Festival Choir, along with Treble Choir, and Mixed Choir, work hard to be as good as they are. The classes consist of warm-ups, both physical and vocal, followed by the real work of preparing pieces for perfor- mances. Choir is not only a credit but a chance to perfect musical skills, and learn more about music itself, attitude, and teamwork. Mrs. Swenson feels that “All of the kids have excellent attitudes and are will- ing to work.” Show Choir is an extra- curricular activity where the per- formers combine singing with danc- ing. In order to join, auditions are held early in the school year. These talented performers not only give you something to listen to, but some- thing to watch! Left: Show Choir. Three hours are spent looking at the world’s finest display of anything from sculptures to rare paintings. The next stop is the Shedd Aquarium where they will see most of the marine life in the world. An hour is spent watching sea life such as the great white shark, sea turtles, and many other ocean-faring creatures. The students will also eat in an ethnic restaurant to give, them a little some- thing that can’t be found in this area. Chinatown, Greektown, and Little Italy are just a few of the places that they have gone before. The trip not only is educational, but it gives a chance to those students to see the city. Another project that they participated in was to sell candy and other goods at the home sporting events. The money that was raised was put into a fund for a class trip. The 1986 School Fair Fun in the sun makes everything come up rosy. The 1986 School Fair was considered a success by many people in the Spring Green area. It was an excit- ing day for many of the stu- dents and parents who par- ticipated. River Valley is one out of only two schools in Wisconsin who still have a school fair. With so many schools not participating in this activity anymore. Gov- ernor Tony Eari came to see the event take place. The following activities took place this year: cattle and sheep showing, a horse show, judging of pets, bak- ing, canning, sewing, vege- tables, leather crafts, wood- working, clothing, photog- raphy. The fair was espe- cially exciting for the grade school kids who came to take a look at all of the ani- mals and crafts. The school fair is a great place to show off your talents and hard work. The participants were rewarded with ribbons and trophies. 64 “Would anyone like a balloon?”, asks Kelly, Cheryl, Erica, and Missy. 65 RV On Safari, Homecoming ’86 Treat every minute of high school as if it were your last because it soon will be. The 1986 Homecoming pep rally and the Home- coming dance was a great success. At the pep rally many of the students from the River Valley schools came to try and win the yell- ing contest and to show the football team that we want- ed them to win. Even though the seniors won the yelling contest, the other grades gave it their best shot or should I say their best yell. The seniors won, of course, because they have the big- gest mouths; this year was no exception. Many of the students in this high school have school as well as class spirit. They showed it by coming to the pep rally and yelling for their class and showing their - VT f k Above: Chris Lucey, Bill Bruegge- man. Rick Lockman, Jim Stoltz, Rachel Peckham. The Homecoming games this year were probably the most fun the students have had at any of the homecom- ing events in the past two years. Something was alive, and everyone was feeling and showing it. The school spirit from each class was incredible and every grade seemed to be very competi- tive. It wasn’t always just the same team winning one game after another. We had a variety of games this year. One of the favorites and most fun to watch was the Porkin’ Pud- din’ game, as you can tell by the expression on Mary Jo’s face. Another heart pound- ing and intensifying game was the mighty Tug-of War, which surprisingly, the freshmen won. It seemed, however, that Lucy Everson got a little carried away and accidentally “hurt Free- man’s feelings” in this game. (Why don’t you ask Lucy about it!) That’s prob- ably the reason the seniors didn’t do so well in this event. At any rate, the sen- iors won overall and every- one else came in with close placings. All in all, the students did not really care who won, but instead they just had a good time playing the games, laughing and yelling, and just having a great time. Our Hit Parade And That Ain’t No BULL It was a bright, sunny day for River Valley’s Home- coming parade on Septem- ber 26. It started out with numerous floats from differ- ent businesses in the area which were quite original and fun. Then came the bands; the Senior high and Junior high each had their marching bands participat- ing in this festivity. Next came the class floats with the seniors tak- ing first place and the ju- niors with second. Also, the cross country team added a little variation to the parade this year when various members of the team ran through the pa- rade showing off their mus- cular legs. And last but not least, the Grand Finale, the Home- coming Court of 1986-87! Riding in snappy looking convertibles were Scott French-Linda Zoellick, Ty Ruhland-Deanna Ewers, Chris Fargen-Brenda Volk, Jason Freel-Jennifer Green- heck, Guy Kempthorne- Jane Pletzer, Rick Stoltz- Lucy Everson, Todd Town- send-Deb Hetzel, Waylon Kannenberg-Lori Schwartz, and our Homecoming KING and QUEEN this year was Bob Jewell escort- ing Lisa Larson. Many people thought this year’s parade has been one, if not THE best and most interesting parade that has marched through Spring Green in a long time. 70 Homecoming floats for 1986-87. Band Choir Christmas Concerts 72 The annual Band and Choir Christmas concerts this year were great successes. Mr. Krofta and Mrs. Swenson commanded excellence in these fine presentations of talent. The Varsity Band was first to per- form at the High School on De- cember 15, 1986. They played “A Festival of Albert Burt Carols,” “A Celebration of Christmas,” “Colonel Bogey,” and “Pachelbel’s Canon.” The Symphonic Band was next. They featured “The Black Horse Troop,” “Themes from The Nutcracker Suite,” “A Christmas Festival,” “Original Dixieland Concerto,” and “Christmas Sing-A-Long.” During the final song, the audience was asked to participate. A special jazz combo was featured during the Band concert. Jane Bettinger, Donna Frommung, Deanna Ewers, Carin Mieden, Sheila Blau, Becky Buch- man, Pam Carlson, and Kathy Crook sang “Glorificamus Te” which was accompanied by Lorraine Carlson. The Festival Choir performed a Bach Cantata “For Us A Child Is Born,” and “Caroling, Caroling.” Kim Limmex and Todd Smith ac- companied the Choir. Football ’86 Although the varsity football team took its share of bumps and bruises, they kept on working hard all through the season. The rather dis- mal record of one win and eight losses doesn’t reflect the hard work put into the 1986 football season. The highlight of the year was the 28-27 loss to Prairie du Chien. Al- though the game was lost, the team put in their best performance of the year. River Valley took the opening kickoff and on the fourth play, senior running back Scott Horton broke a 56 yard touchdown run. The extra point attempt was good, and Valley held the lead at 7-8. Late in the first quarter. Prairie’s Scott Shedivy ran in from the eight yard line. The two-point conversion failed and Valley held the lead 7-6. Prairie then took the lead in the sec- ond quarter when Mike Nelson ran a 46 yarder into the end zone. Prairie’s two-point conversion was good and they held the lead at 14-7. Later, in the second half. Prairie then marched the ball down the field and added the final touchdown of the game. The two-point conversion was good, and Prairie won the game 28-27. Although the game was lost the players and the coaches all agreed that the team finally played up to their potential. The 1986 football team, coaches, cheerleaders and managers. The 1986 cross country team fin- ished another painful, tearful, yet re- warding season with Mr. Hill as a first year coach. The team as a whole gave their best and worked together. Dedica- tion and faith kept the team going through all of the injuries and com- plications. There was quite a bit of exper- ience and senior leadership to help the rest of the team and show the rookies all of the tricks of the trade, including Mr. Hill, who has had many years of experience in running but had never coached cross country before. One of the seniors leaders this year worked extra hard and because all of his devotion and loyalty to the team, Jason Freel advanced on to the state cross country meet and finished eighth. Congratulations Jason! Your talents will greatly be missed next year. All of the seniors will be missed next year, however, there will be a lot of talent in the underclassmen and many good things are to be seen next season. Left to right: A. Rose, A. Miller, J. They won the S.W.A.L. title by being victorious in every conference match. One team did give them a little trouble, but with “team effort and positive attitudes, the girls pulled together and won. With good feelings about their playing and ratings in the state, the girls’ took their regional without much trouble. The team then ad- vanced to sectionals at Waunakee. Their first match-up was with Waunakee and, as the record states, they were beaten. They kept together to take second in the sectional. This team was a “one-of-a-kind” team. There was always a “team ef- fort,” which cannot be emphasized enough. It wasn’t just on the court but off the court as well. The girls will always cherish those memories. Beginning on the rigl t foot in September, they played host to many competitive teams as they took first place in the RV Classic. To take first place River Valley first defeated Sauk Prairie in a 15-7 and a 15-10 match. Then going on to a 15-8 and a 15-11 victory over Wisconsin Heights, they followed this up with a 15-8 and a 15-6 win over Lake Mills. And in the final match they proved to be winners by defeating Portage 15-7 and 15-3. In October our girls played against more tough teams, but didn’t come out on top in the Portage Invitational. It was a tough match that forced them to take second against Waunakee. Teams that we beat while working our way up to Waunakee included: Holmen, Middleton, Richland Center, and Por- tage. After winning conference our Volleyball girls advanced to Regionals, where they defeated Dodgeville, Richland Center, and Lancaster. Next came the Sectionals which proved to be the end of our ’86 season. Losing against Waunakee 0-15 and a 8-15, closed the season. We also played Columbus and Viroqua at Sectinoals and won, but after Waunakee nothing else mattered. Come on Lisa you can gel it. Just a little higher Suz. Not only did they improve upon the season record, they also im- proved in many other ways. As individuals, each person played an impor- tant role on the team. Those not seeing much playing time helped by giving support on the side. As a team, all the boys hustled and showed a lot of enthusiasm all year long. Things looked good after our Hawks played their first game at Mt. Horeb. The boys hustled, played their hearts out and walked away with a victory. All it took was that first game and the boys decided to work hard and see what they could accomplish during the rest of the season. With much hard prac- tice and dedication, the Hawks showed that they could play and win as a team. Rick Stoltz got two points for the Blackhawks. when the Hawks defeated Mt. They had no problem doing that. Among the six seniors on the team, Brenda Volk was the only returning starter from last year’s team. Along with Brenda, the other seniors, Suzanne Powell, Deb Hetzel, Penny Brummer, Barb Richards, and Liz Gee pulled together to form a close team. After losing a few juniors for various reasons, Denny Coppernoll, varsity coach, had to look to his bench and the freshman team for players. Lucky for the team, some strong players were found. The biggest apparent problem for the girls this year was size. But, the team proved they could make up for their size with quickness. In their season opener against the Mt. Horeb Vikings, the girls showed they weren’t quite as inexperienced as everyone expected, by winning 51 - 40. Many exciting games were played this year, and the good came with the bad. There were strong comebacks, thrilling overtimes, and discouraging turnovers. In the end, however, this year’s team showed they could pull together and put up good competition. The ’87 Hawks have overwhelmed devot- ed fans by defeating opposing teams again and again. The most tense and exciting match was that against our arch enemies, the Richland Center Hornets. We had to win. We battled to the very end when Kelly Gaulke finally pinned his man. Victory: how sweet it was! We knew we had the potential and determination to be victori- ous in almost any match. We were a young team, but we were im- pressive. Two returning seniors did extremely well and deserve our applause. They are Kelly Gaulke and Willy Hutter. Good job guys. We finally rose above the rest when we claimed the Class B crown at the Badger State Invita- tional with three straight victo- ries. The title was our first ever. Our team surprised the class B field as our unranked Blackhawks defeated three of the top four seeds at the tournament including East Troy, Stevens Point Pacelli, and, once again, our SWAL rival, Richand Center. We are proud of you. Good luck to the graduating seniors. We’ll miss you. Heeeerrrrrr’s Jerold. Doing the Praying Mantis imitation. 108 The 1986-87 varsity wrestling team is as follows. Returning junior letter winners include Jennifer And- ing and Stephanie Hanson. After taking the SWAL Confer- ence title for the past two years, the gymnasts were excited and hopeful that they would be able to capture the title for their third consecutive year. Losing last year’s seniors made a big difference in this year’s compe- tition. Janelle Mercer, who took eleventh in the state meet last year on the uneven parallel bars, was greatly missed. Angie Alt, a gra- duate of last year’s team, who was also a dedicated and fine gymnast was injured during the peak of the season. She was unable to gain back the strength which would have other- wise taken her to state. Great things were expected of Lisa Larson and Jane Pletzer be- cause of their fine work in last year’s state meet. On floor and vault, Lisa was unable to make finals. Jane, however, took sixth in state on the uneven bars. Their help this year helped greatly. Even though they are young and inexperienced, our new gymnasts on the team are showing talent and are sure to be state hopefuls in the fu- ture. The new freshmen girls include: Sue O’Donnell, Missy Hottman, Kim Frame, Stacey Anderson and Martha Steinhorst. Two sophomores are returning to the team, Shari Pul- vermacher and Cheryl Alt. Tracey White, a returning junior, is proving to be a big help. Coach Dan Ketter and Julie Kuhse, a former River Valley gym- nast, are major factors in the girl’s performance. Mr. Kettner, who has been head coach for 12 years, hoped to see his team go to state. Julie, who has been coaching along with Mr. Kettner for six years, inspired the girls to perform beyond their abili- ties. The girls feel Julie is not just a coach; she’s a good friend. Together the girls are working very hard and practicing many long hours so they can all achieve a place in the state competition. Jane, Lisa and Gwen would like to conquer state before graduating. With all the hard work they are putting in, they deserve everything they worked for. 114 Bottom: Missy Hottman, Sue O’Donnell, Stacey Anderson, Kim Frame. They are the ones who seem to get all the press, the ones who, for some reason, al- ways seem to stick out in your mind. Maybe it’s because they get all the fame and attention, maybe it’s be- cause they are just “special” in some mysterious way. In any case, it’s a tradition to pick “exceptions” in a sport, most often the “exceptional” athletes, although (let’s face it, some players are better than others) sometimes fans pick the “unexceptional” too. Throughout history exceptional athletes have been rewarded, and this year is cer- tainly no exception. The athlethes listed below were good enough to be placed on the “top shelf.” These peo- ple are not your average run-of-the- mill Joe Jocks. But the days, weeks, months, and finally the years flew by like a blur. Peoples’ faces and our experiences blended together in a huge Ka- leidoscope. Over the years, we’ve be- come something like a family. We’ve gained and lost mem- bers thru the years. And like a family we have never all gotten along, but the one thing that we all had in common was the number 1987. 1987 was the one thing that bound us all together into a class. In our twelve years of school we’ve grown and learned from each other. The experiences we have had we will remember forever even when graduation is only a memory. Graduation has come and gone. Now, we’ve all gone our separate ways. The party’s over. We’ve begun to go on with our lives. We’ve made the trip together. It looks like we made it! Made It Looks like Bob made it to the bottom. Bryan Dolan, and Todd Smith team up to make the senior float. 129 Baseball 1987 The 1987 Varsity Baseball team: Bottom: Jody Knight. Scott Horton. Paul Yankc, Jesse Knight. This year the Varsity Baseball team saw its share of ups and downs. Although the team failed to win a game during the season, the boys worked hard and continued to put forth a good effort. Seniors Bob Jewell, Mark Nelson, and Scott Horton showed their leadership all through the season. When things looked tough, the seniors were there to help the team through the hard times. Even though the team record isn’t that impressive, individual improve- ment is the major accomplishment for each member of the team. Every- one showed improvement from the start to the end, and each player should feel good about his improve- ment. 1987 RIVER VALLEY BASEBALL TEAM STATISTICS R.V. vs. Dodgeville R.V. vs. Fennimore R.V. vs. Prairie Du Chien R.V. vs. Richland Center R.V. vs. Riverdale R.V. vs. West by R.V. vs. Viroqua R.V. vs. Dodgeville Loss 17-5 Loss 8-6 Loss 12-0 Loss 7-2 Loss 4-2 Loss 4-1 Loss 26-1 Loss 17-7 R.V. vs. Prairie Du Chien Loss 11-1 R.V. vs. Riverdale Loss 17-5 R.V. vs. Boscobel Loss 6-1 R.V. vs. Reedsburg Loss 7-1 R.V. vs. Ml. They wanted to win three consecutive state cham- pionships in a row. It’s great to have won the state Crown two years in a row, but a third year seemed to be even better! One of the main characteristics of this team was the very real exper- ience of the players. There were six returning players from the state championship team from last year including: Brenda Volk, Penny Brummer, Jenni Ferstl, Connie Christianson, Shari Pulvermacher, and Jane Liegel. Despite the loss of players from last year’s team, the girls made up with their quickness, agility, and plain talent. One of the highlights of the season came at the Reedsburg tournament. The girls won the tournament with a 3-0 record, beating Reedsburg, Plat- teville, and Sauk Prairie. In the last few weeks of school the girls will be preparing for their post- season play at regionals, sectionals, and hopefully state! The varsity boy’s basketball team showed us great talent, and they im- proved upon their record from pre- vious years. Not only have they im- proved last year’s stats, but they have also shown improvement as in- dividuals. Our wrestlers had the potential and determination to come out win- ners in almost any match. He also is taught that if you have friends, you don’t need anything else. Along the way, many other things occur. Lucy learns that she is a crab- by person. Snoopy fights the Red Baron, Linus does many long, bor- ing, speeches, Schroeder enjoys his music. Patty talks about anything that comes to mind, and the gang writes a book report about Peter Rabbit. These fine examples of humanity have expressed their ideas in a way that few men could possibly accom- plish. They have achieved a level of undaunted excellence. We should thank them for the bril- liant contributions that they have humbly given our fine school. They should be remembered for their strong spirit, vast imagination, and their ability to pursue the impossible. 155 This year’s Junior Olympics brought pleasure and fun for most, as long as they followed the planned activities which in- cluded: A game in which each contestant had to place a bat on the floor, put his forehead on the bat and then spin around the bat. He then had to try and shoot a basket. In an- other game, contestants had their hands tied behind their backs while they tried to find a jelly bean in a cream pie. In one game, the contestants had to run up, stand behind a line, and shoot out the flame of “I'm no amateur at this! I'm not very good at this! Junior Olympics a candle with a squirt gun. A game involving egg yolks was messy, indeed! In still another game, team members had to throw a frisbee through a hanging tire. In the sixth game, each team member was given a straw. The first player had to pick up a marshmallow with the straw and then pass it along down the line. The last person on the team had to put it into a plastic cup. In the seventh game, team members bounced quarters into a cup of punch. If they made it, they had to drink the punch. There weren’t many amateurs. In the last game, the team members were split into pairs. One person was blind- folded while the other sat down in a rolling chair. The blind- folded member then pushed the chair while being directed around the cones. The team that beat everyone else at the 1987 Junior Olym- pics bash included: Jenni Ferstl, Cameron Walsh, Jan- een Erdman, Waylon Kannen- berg. Shelly Anding, Guy Kempthorne, Kris Effinger, and Todd Wilkinson. 156 157 Academic Awards AWARDS ASSEMBLY Honor rolls, attendance, and leadership are three qualities that contribute to awards and recognition. However, it seems that these qualities are pos- sessed by people who are al- ways over-looked and forgot- ten. Because of this fact, two special award ceremonies have been held for these dedicated and hard working people. February 2, 1987 was the first of these award ceremo- nies; and hopefully it will con- tinue each year. It consisted of sophomores, juniors, and sen- iors, who have achieved a cer- tain current grade point aver- age (GPA); and therefore, they received either a gold, silver, or bronze medal. Students with a certain cummulative GPA dur- ing the 1985-1986 received an academic letter. May 18, 1987 was the date the second awards ceremony took place at RVHS this year. The evening period to be prof- itable for seniors as well as the underclassmen. These students worked hard for their grades while their parents pushed them to do their best, to put forth their best effort, and to work to their fullest potential. And the result? Between $18- and $20,000 worth of scholar- ships and various awards were presented to these worthy can- didates. Congratulations to everyone who received an award that night, and good luck in the fu- ture! Sheryl McCarville receives a scholarship from Grccnway Manor. As you can tell, this is one of Kim's better nights — she has a good- looking guy on each side . . not to mention the gold medals. 158 Barbara Fitzgerald presented Chris Berry with a scholarship from Arthur’s. Ross Richardson received a scholarship from the Spring Green American Legion. RVHS’s pride: Our Academic Decathalon Team (gasp). Jcni Kracmcr, Jennifer Anding, and Connie Christianson were the three juniors receiving silver medals — they will go for the gold next year. Ty Ruhland receiving his scholarship from Scholarship Trust Fund and the Community Theatre Association. 159 Forensics Above: Jon Brown, James Lake, Kathy Nondorf, Jenny Dietzman, Lynette Ruppcrt. At the Howard Hanson Invitational in Platteville, Martha McCamy, Sharon Polcyn, and Lynette Ruppert all placed first. Our team also did River Valley proud at the state meet in Madison. Kathy Nondorf, Martha McCamy, Debbie Boggs and Leilani Zimmer received silver medals by earning a score of 23 or 24 out of 25. The highlights of the meet for River Valley’s team were Sharon Polcyn’s and Lynette Ruppert’s perfect scores of 25. They were rewarded with gold medals. Above: Hi! My name is Martha!
