THE HAWK 1986 Prepared By 1986 ANNUAL STAFF RIVER VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL Spring Green, Wisconsin IN MEMORIAM DEDICATION HOWARD MURPHY The 1986 Annual Staff at River Valley High School would like to dedicate this annual to Mr. Howard Murphy for all his devotion to the students. Probably Mr. Murphy's biggest contribution to us was his 24 years as head football coach. Mr. Football” instilled a winning tradition here and always motivated the students on and off the field. Among other things, Mr. Murphy served as an Athletic Director, an advisor for the Student Council, and an organizer of the Student Assistance Program. For all your hard work Mr. Murphy, WE THANK YOU. 3 Kris lets the discus fly. It takes concentration to play quar- lane sets lor her dismount. ters! Hi. Tim! RIVER VALLEY IN ACTION No! The former and present students of River Valley would like to take this opportunity to thank those citizens in our community who have given of their time and talent to serve as members of the River Valley School Board. Often times yours may seem to be a thankless job. You hear complaints from all sides. But, we would like you to know that your dedication and effort has truly paid off through the years as River Valley students have gone from here and become very successful in the outside world. The first two years that River Valley existed, we operated in the three old high schools and numerous grade schools. The present high school was opened for the 1962-1963 school year for grades 9-12. The present junior high school was opened for the 1969-70 school year for grades 7-9 leaving the high school for grades 10-12. The original school board was made up of people who had a vision - Roy Anding, Nordeen Gilbertson, Kenneth Hottmann, Helen Martin, Myron Moore, Charles Roberts, and Walter Urfer. Our present school board - Richard Baker, Ronald Drachenberg, Reed Horton, Daniel Patenaude, Jane Peckham, Edward Porter, Ralph Ruhland, Helen Silko, and Beatrice Smith - has a still broader vision as they work hard to keep pace with the educational and technological advances of today's society. In the 26 years that River Valley has existed, only 32 different people have served the nine main areas of our school district. Those people and the years they have served are listed below: Name Years of Service Time of Service Roy Anding 12 1960-1972 Richard Baker 2 1984-1986 Ronald Drachenberg 2 1984-1986 Janelle Elmer 6 1974-1980 Felix Feiner 8 1971-1979 William Gates 12 1972-1984 Nordeen Gilbertson 20 1960-1980 Merton Harrop 1 1967-1968 Reed Horton 1 1985-1986 Kenneth Hottmann 12 1960-1972 Wolfgang Iausly 3 1982-1985 Dr. Gerald Kempthome 3 1979-1982 Ralph Kolan 6 1974-1980 Duane Kraemer 2 1972-1974 Norman Kraemer 5 1963-1968 Vincent Limmex 8 1963-1971 Helen Martin 22 1960-1982 Carabelle McCaskill 10 1974-1984 Myron Moore 12 1960-1972 Earl Murphy 2 1971-1973 Daniel Patenaude 6 1980-1986 Harold Peck 3 1968-1971 lane Peckham 6 1980-1986 Edward Porter 13 1973-1986 Terry Richard 4 1968-1972 Charles Roberts 7 1960-1967 John Roberts 6 1968-1974 Ralph Ruhland 6 1980-1986 William Schoenmann 2 1972-1974 Helen Silko 14 1972-1986 Beatrice Smith 4 1982-1986 Walter Urfer 8 1960-1968 8 DR. Like all organizations, the club needs money and receives theirs selling concessions and sponsoring dances. This money is spent during the school year as the Art Club travels to Madison to view art shows at the Civic Center and the Elvehjem Museum of Art. Later in the year the club sends students to current shows at the Art Institute in Chicago. The biggest sojourn, by far, is the week-end trip the Art Club takes to Chicago every spring. In Chicago the club visits the International Art Expo and the Shedd Aquarium. They also sample various ethnic cultures, cuisines, and night lives. We also hope to encourage several area families to accept a Mexican student for a Homestay program. The 1985 1986 Annual Staff worked hard to put together this annual. Photographers took pictures while other staff members developed the films. The annual pages were then designed and put together by some staff members. To raise money, the staff sold ice cream at the end of each school day. We also solicited sponsor donations from various businesses in the River Valley community. This is the last year that the Annual Staff will be an extra curricular activity. Beginning next year, the production of the annual will become part of the journalism class. NHS When the National Honor Society was established in 1921. the hope was to create an organization that would recognize and foster academic achievement while developing other characteristics essential to citizens in a democracy. Scholarship, character, service, and leadership are ideals that remain as relevant today as they were in 1921. J. G. Masters, a high school principal from Nebraska, made a proposal to start a national honor society in 1919 at a convention for Secondary School Principals. He and many others in attendance at this convention were concerned about the growing movement to emphasize athletic and academic activities. This emphasis was often regarded as detrimental to programs designed to stimulate scholarship. Now more than 60 years old. the National Honor Society has established a reputation for excellence among administrators, faculty members, students, parents, and residents of the school community. This reputation is the result of years of commitment on the part of everyone involved. Through NHS chapter service activities, members maintain and extend the qualities that won them selection. Membership is thus both an honor and an obligation. STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council consists of students who are elected by their classmates. This year's council consists of four sophomores, five juniors, and eight seniors. The organization is formed to represent the entire student body plus the faculty and administration. To prepare and organize what a student council should do to benefit the school to its full potential, the officers attended a seminar at the Richland Center Campus. The organization meets every second and fourth week of each month to discuss various thoughts and ideas that they feel would help improve the school and the student body as a whole. In the past years, the Student Council has been involved in the Annual Junior Olympics, a talent show during homecoming week, and a snowball dance where three girls from each class choose their dates to form a snowball court. The organization was also involved in many new activities. These activities included a monthly doughnut sale, a turkey raffle, and a New Year's Eve Lock In which provided the student body with an alcohol-free environment. The council also hosted Blackhawk High School for a full day at River Valley. The senior harrier experienced a great deal of success on the track team but waited until his final year to join cross country. In addition to being River Valley's second individual conference champion, he extended his season to the state meet. Tim's fifth place finish at state was the best personal finish in the school's history. The 5,000 meter run in a time of 17:43 placed Tim on the All-State Team. Running in 3 inches of snow slowed the times but the Blackhawk runner would not be denied. Tim collected individual titles at the Darlington Invitational, S. W. A. L. Conference Meet, and the Mauston Sectional. Runner-up finishes were achieved at the Reedsburg Invitational and the Mount Horeb Regional. Tim Roelke was a central part of the team's success but he would readily agree that the push provided by teammates Jason Freel, Rick Schwartz, and Todd Townsend contributed to his fine season. 117 STATISTICS Player FGA FGM Pci. Lisa has been to the state meet twice before - once in 1984 when she took the title and last year when she finished third. Her concentrated hard work paid off while again being chosen the team's most valuable athlete. Lisa's determina- tion will hopefully carry over into her other events and team members as the girls have a strong senior class next year. It is particularly gratifying to see dedicated athletes rewarded in areas where they don't hear the cheering of the crowds. 154 SPONSORS CARDINAL IG GERALD C.
